An armed standoff between police and a man at luxury Honolulu resort ended early Sunday after the suspect was found dead from an apparent suicide.

The Associated Press reports that an armed man shot through the door of his room at The Kahala Hotel & Resort. When a SWAT team entered his room around 3:30 a.m. he was found dead.

Authorities believe the man was in the military, the AP reports, possibly stationed in Oahu. Further details have not been released, including the man’s name.

No one outside of the man’s room was hurt, according to Honolulu Police Capt. Brian Lynch. Hotel security and law enforcement had evacuated the area around the man’s room.

“Everybody is accounted for,” Lynch said.

Shots were first fired around 6 p.m., according to authorities. When hotel employees went up to the room and knocked on the door, the man inside shot through the door.

KITV reported that around five shots were fired from the fourth-story room in the hotel. Eighteen officers responded and all the other guests on the floor were evacuated.

Authorities told those in the area to shelter in place. As the AP reports, photos shared with local media showed around 100 guests sheltered inside the hotel’s ballroom, provided with blankets and pillows.
