A woman died and a young girl suffered serious injuries in a house fire that occured about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in Breckenridge.

According to a press release from Gratiot County Sheriff Mike Morris, the home was fully engulfed in flames when officers arrived at the scene.

“They made contact with a 35-year-old male outside the residence with severe burns,” Morris said. “A 34-year-old woman and a 7-year-old girl were still in the residence.”

Firefighters were able to get the female and child out of the house and resuscitation efforts were attempted on both.

“The female was pronounced dead at the scene,” Morris said. “The little girl was resuscitated and transported to a local hospital and then to Hurley (Medical Center) in Flint.”

The male victim was also initially taken to a local hospital then flown to Hurley Medical Center for treatment.

An autopsy will be conducted on the woman to positively identify her, Morris said.

The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Division was called in to try and determine the cause and origin of the blaze, he added.

According to Morris, a preliminary investigation showed that “some type of explosion happened in the house.”

A number of area fire departments assisted at the scene, including Breceknridge, Alma, Ithaca and St. Louis, as well as Breckenridge Police Chief Brendan Weslock.
