On A Diet? Trying To Lose That Extra Body Fat?
Your typical bathroom scale will only tell you the amount you are losing in pounds. The best way to keep track of your progress is by measuring your body fat. By using This Care Touch Skinfold Body Fat Caliper Set, you can do so accurately and easily.
Since the majority of your body fat is underneath your skin, the best method for testing your body fat percentage is through the skinfold method.
So how do you measure your body fat percentage with the skinfold method?
You can do so in 3 steps. Pinch, Click and Read. You can do so privately or with someone’s help if you prefer sharing that information.
To start with make sure the slide on the curved part of the caliper tool is all the way to the right.
Pinch:
While standing, with your fingers 2-3 inches apart, firmly grasp the suprailiac skinfold (the area above your hips) between the thumb and index finger of your left hand. Gently pull the skinfold away from your body. Pull the skin and underlying at away from the muscle tissue.
Click It:
With the Care Touch Caliper Tool in your right hand, place the jaws over your skinfold about ¼” from your left thumb and index finger. The caliper tool should be halfway between the base and crest of the fold. It should be perpendicular to the fold.
Now with your thumb press the Care Touch Caliper Tool until you feel a slight “click”.
Release the jaws of the caliper tool and record your measurement to the nearest millimeter.
Read:
Refer to the male or female chart to determine your body fat percentage at the intersection of your age and millimeter reading.

The tape measure is deluxe, though. It's the soft kind so it doesn't scratch. There's a handle to end the fumbling with the tiny end. It'll lock the increment you land on. There's even a notch for putting the tape measure end so you can be certain of accuracy.
Altogether, the overall value of the tape measure makes up for the embellished simplicity of the calipers, but if you need a serious and precise pinch measurement, this is not the device you're looking for.
Wife and I are trying new diets and wanted to get *approximate* body fat numbers to go along with the measurement of body parts (Tummy, arms, legs, chest, etc... etc....) Overall, these are fine ... I'll go over our pro's and con's.
Pro's:
* Excellent price for both the calipers and tape measure.
* Card that explains caliper measurements is easy to understand and read.
* Came packaged well, nothing was damaged, and all was in tact.
Con's:
* There are no directions for how to use the calipers *properly*. They give you a small (2) picture diagram explaining how to use them, but you really need more detail on how to pinch the skin and use the actual calipers.
* Tape measure doesn't move freely. Gets stuck constantly when trying to return the tape to its housing. Annoying, but it eventually goes in.
Overall, we weren't expecting the world with these products at this price point. They work well for their intend purpose and we're happy with that.
*** SIDE NOTE***
We found that the calipers are more precise if you are clamping/closing the clicking side with your smaller fingers. Use your thumb on the large non movable side.
Hope this helps others. I'd buy them again ... If you need EXACT BF% ... I'd go a different route as opposed to calipers. If you need a range of a few percent, these calipers will work great.
The included chart is made on sturdy, slick paper and full color. It's easy to read with your measurement on top, age on the left, and your range color coded where the two intersect. It has a chart for males on one side and females on the other. This type of measurement only measures your stomach area, so it's very misleading, but you can measure it by yourself whereas the Jackson/Pollock 7-Site Caliper Method is more accurate but requires help from someone else to get your back and shoulders. There's nothing wrong with the chart that is included.
Finally, we come to the caliper, and the only reason I purchased this item. It is made of very flimsy plastic and feels ready to break during use. There is a slider in the middle that moves when you squeeze the caliper, and there is a clear line indicating the measurement. It is easy to read and the measurer moves well enough for a piece of plastic. The problem comes in getting that measurement to be accurate. How tightly do you squeeze the caliper to get an accurate measurement? If you squeeze too gently or too tightly, your measurement is going to be way off and that defeats the purpose of going to the trouble of measuring. The way it is supposed to work involves a notch in the caliper that a little nub fits into. When you squeeze the caliper with your thumb and fingers, your thumb is supposed to press the nub into the notch in the side of the caliper with a click so you know you're at the perfect depth. But because this is made of plastic, there's a protrusion on the back of the nub that prevents it from fitting into the notch. I had to sand it down to get it to fit into the notch. So I tried it again. There's clearance, but it's difficult to get the nub to line up with the notch properly. The thumb lever isn't sturdy enough to stay in place while you're gripping it. There's supposed to be a click when it is seated properly, but my wife had to squeeze it to the point of being painful before the nub would seat in the notch. I sanded the nub down to a point so it will actually fit in the notch now, and we use that as a general guideline as to how tight to squeeze it, but we have no faith that it is accurate. All in all, this product was an epic failure and did not work as expected. I will have to purchase another product to measure our body fat with. 2/5 stars
