About
The concept of the museum, which was originally called the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, can be traced back to Crown Princess Victoria of Prussia, who published her ideas in a memorandum in 1883. It was Wilhelm von Bode who finally put these ground-breaking ideas into practice. In 1897, construction work began at the northern tip of the Museum Island on a museum that was to be devoted to the Renaissance, designed by Eberhard von Ihne. The building was badly damaged in the Second World War. In 1956 it was renamed the Bode-Museum after its first director and spiritual founder. After extensive renovation work, the museum building reopened to the public in autumn 2006.

    A museum for specialists
Well, I couldn't give the Bode Museum a 2. It doesn't merit a "poor" rating. Here's what I strongly feel: This is a museum for specialists. It is most definitely not a museum for the general visitor. Plus, as with most of the other Museuminsel institutions, the presentation is dated and extremely conservative. OK, at least it's not trendy. Here is what it contains: medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque sculpture; Byzantine; and coins. If you're a specialist in any of that stuff, then go. If not, then I would give the Bode Museum a miss.

Avoid the crowds and get your fill of medieval sculpture
This museum has more medieval sculpture (with some Renaissance and Baroque sculpture added for good measure) than I have ever seen in one place. If, like my wife and I, this is what you love, you will find this museum fantastic. If not, skip it. It is certainly the least visited museum on Museum Island. You can avoid the crowds here!

    Elegant museum, uneducated staffing
We were looking forward to visiting this elegant, imposing museum on the Museum insel. It is stylish, spacious and well maintained, and carefully curated with themes. Excellent wide sculpture collections. Nice cafe upstairs, relaxed. The down were the staff downstairs who followed us around, I consider this racism being a person of colour. Education on bias needed.

Great collection in a sumptuous building
I went principally to see this majestic building for its architecture and grand halls. However, I was taken aback by the fabulous medieval art, especially from Germany, mainly on wood, and some impressive majolica work of de la Robbia family. Amazing numismatic collection, perhaps the biggest in the world, is alone worth the visit.

    Great for sculpture
The Bode Museum specializes in statuary from the middle ages to the 18th century, although it also has a number of paintings on the walls. I particularly like the room with the carvings by Tilman Riemenschneider. There is an interesting small exhibition juxtaposing works by Pablo Picasso with other, older Spanish paintings, and the exhibition Klar Text candidly discusses the history of the museum. Also worth noting is the exhibition "Der zweite Blick," which is dispersed throughout the collection and seeks to place women more centrally in the collection. Recommended!

terrific building, hodgepodge of collections skews Christian
Bode Museum, originally named for Kaiser Friedrich and since renamed for a former director, as part of a post-War renovation and reconfiguration. Although the other museums are adjacent, they don’t connect easily; the Bode is built right onto the water, without accommodation for a path. So we crossed the river north to a local neighborhood and approached the museum from the other side of the Spree. (Note: now I see that the Bode suggests coming from the south-west instead.) It is a grand building, somehow much larger from the inside than the outside, under-attended, and with many small galleries off long hallways, and a variety of collections, all including far too many images of Madonna and Child. Traffic flow was a bit weird; entrances to galleries hard to find. Minimal cafe, but great location for it.

    Byzantine Art!
The Bode Museum is an exhibition of Byzantine art. Byzantine art focuses on the expression of religion, specifically orthodox Christianity and the images exhibited were very much controlled by the church when produced. If region is not an interest for you then this museum may not be your thing. I kind of fit into that category as I visited without researching beforehand. I did however think this was an amazing building, with great organisation and it wasn’t packed with tourists (probably because it was January). I spent my visit looking at the expressions posed by the subjects of the sculptures and paintings. Some of which were quite serious, beautiful, ugly old and young . A few that were probably unintentionally comical but that might be my twisted humour! My advice research before visiting.

The museum itself is well worth seeing and well set out in a lovely old building. Beware though, the guards can be stern to the point of rudeness. My wife sat on what certainly looked like a bench to sit on but was abruptly told to move. I momentarily took my jacket off to more easily get something from an inner pocket and to my surprise was actually shouted at. If there are rules - fair enough- but it is the manner in which they were communicated that comes across as rude,. In my case I do not speak German and to have the guard get increasingly animated and shaking his head when I did not understand him was plain rude.

If you like rooms and rooms and rooms of endless art that looks the same then this will tickle your fancy. I saw an old something or 'nother from 700 a.d. and that is almost as old as Christ's first bicycle so that was cool. The building is nice, pretentious, but nice.

The Bode Museum, on Museum Island in Berlin, is a world-class museum that I think is underrated by both Berliners and tourists. The usual description of the Bode is that it's a "sculpture museum."
However, that's an oversimplification. It's true that the Bode doesn't have many paintings. (There are a few, and they are excellent.). However, the Bode has alters, retables and polychromed statues. There are columns and capitals. Also, the Bode has treasures. Wonderful treasures like monstrances, reliquaries, and jewelry.

Spending a day at the Bode was one of the highlights of our trip to Berlin. In fact, this possibly
Was our best day. We started out expecting nothing special, and came out of the museum at the end of the day saying, That was absolutely incredible." We expected the Gemaldergalerie to be great, and it was. The Bode was great beyond our highest expectations. Don't miss the Bode if you're in Berlin and love art!

P.S. the powers that be are planning an act of cultural barbarism. They are going to merge the wonderful Gemaldergalerie with equally wonderful Bode. This will effectively destroy these two great museums. Someone has offered his collection of modern art to the government if they give the collection a museum. The government wants the art, and doesn't want to build a new museum, so they are going to squeeze two great collections into one great mess. For shame!
