Newcastle United have confirmed Jonjo Shelvey has signed for Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal until 2025. The midfielder spent 7 years on Tyneside and has been a pivotal figure over that period.
Here is the official statement from the club:
Jonjo Shelvey’s seven-year association with Newcastle United has come to an end, with the midfielder joining Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.
Six-cap England international Shelvey joined the Magpies from Swansea in January 2016 and while United were relegated from the top flight at the end of that season, he played an integral role as Rafa Benítez’s side bounced back at the first time of asking by lifting the Sky Bet Championship trophy.
And he continued to be a key figure for United in the Premier League – with his winning goal against Leeds United just over 12 months ago a turning point in Newcastle’s season as Eddie Howe’s side climbed away from the relegation zone to finish 13th.
Injuries restricted the 30-year-old to five appearances this term, but he moves to the City Ground having represented United 202 times in all competitions, scoring 18 goals. He will be reunited at Nottingham Forest with Chris Wood, who joined Steve Cooper’s side on loan earlier this month, as well as former team-mate Jack Colback.
Shelvey returned to Newcastle tonight to support the lads in their quest for the Carabao Cup final. He got a standing ovation at halftime and was involved in what will be his final victory photo with the Wembley-bound Magpies.
Eddie Howe said the following about Shelvey’s departure:
“Jonjo has been a loyal servant to the club for many years and I want to thank him sincerely for his efforts and commitment during my time here.
“He is a brilliant player who has given so much to the cause, and he leaves with our best wishes for the future.”
Shelvey will wear the number 6 shirt for Forest as he starts the next phase of his career. His exit leaves Newcastle a little short in midfield as a replacement was not brought in. This is an opportunity for long-term security for Shelvey who has been a stellar servant for Newcastle United.
The club have also confirmed Karl Darlow will join Hull City on loan for the remainder of the season.
Here is the official statement on Darlow’s loan:
Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow has joined Championship side Hull City on loan until the end of the season.
The 32-year-old has linked up with Liam Rosenior’s men, who currently sit 15th in the second tier, for the remainder of the current campaign.
Darlow joined the Magpies from Nottingham Forest alongside teammate Jamaal Lascelles in the summer of 2014 before being loaned back to City Ground for the duration of 2014/15.
The former Newport County and Walsall loanee has made a total of 100 appearances during his time at St. James’ Park, helping United return to the Premier League at the first time of asking by being a key part of Rafa Benitez’s Championship-winning squad in 2016/17.
He could make his debut for the Tigers in their second-tier clash with Cardiff City at the MKM Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Comment #5Superb win tonight. Was never going to be a walk in the park. We blew them away in the first 20 minutes and other than the Armstrong chance, they created nothing. Their goal was a good strike but came out of nothing and if anything it woke us up.
Tonight isn’t a night for me to dwell on any critique of the performance, just to enjoy the moment.

Comment #6I was hoping they would put Shelvey front and centre in the picture, but such is life, it would have been an extra classy touch.

Comment #15Awful mistake letting jonjo go. To win sometimes you need to play hardball. Shud have said wait until summer. Now we are well short. 3 runners in the middle of the park with no creativity. We were givin the warning a few weeks ago with the possible injury. But no we want to be nice and let him go.

Comment #16I think I read somewhere earlier that Chelsea have signed six new players in this window but they can only register three new players in their Champions League squad. Wonder who will miss out and how they’ll feel about that? Especially if they just left a club who would have had them in their Champions League squad selection. Man management needed there I think! 🙂

Comment #17Phew we’re going to Wembley but don’t we make hard work of it
Cruising 2-0 up then switched off as if we already there started wasting time the dark arts came to the fore.
If we had of stuck to playing football we would of been easy. Both relieved and frustrated at our tactics tonight from then on
Southampton dominated from then and we were awful couldn’t string passes together let them control the game
Bruno was a firework ready to explode you could see he was going to get a red.
Pope to the rescue
Man of the match Big Joe for me
Thought Miggy, Trips and Willock were poor tonight.
Play like that against Man Utd at Wembley we will get mullered.

I think maybe nerves got to us after Southampton scored. But we kept it tight and saw it out. That’s what matters.

Comment #37I put a post on Facebook celebrating our achievement of reaching the final. Because only us fans will know how much we deserve this after over a decade of turmoil of our club.
But no one has acknowledged my post. Why is it that when the Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea etc fans put posts up, people acknowledge it but when the Toon are doing well no one bats an eye? It saddens me on what is supposed to be an amazing night
