Let’s Support Anthony Gordon – He Could Become A Tip-Top Player – But Is He Worth £45M?

There are some Newcastle fans who haven’t warmed up to Everton’s Anthony Gordon, who looks like our second signing of this January transfer window.

His antics on the pitch and some excessive diving, in particular, have turned them off, but Newcastle were persistent in pressing Everton to sell, and we got the price we wanted – £40M upfront plus £5M in add-ons according to most reports.

Everton also got a sell-on clause included in the contract, which is now normal for young up-and-coming players.

And the £40M initial fee could be spread across the length of his contract – probably 5 years – to help with the Financial Fair Play Rules, but there are also some reports saying it is a one lump sum.

That would be so Everton can act in this transfer window, with new boss Sean Dyche likely to be announced as the new manager today.

The 21-year-old player who joined Everton at 6 years old will add to our firepower up front, and he is a big, physical lad too.

Gordon is only 21 and turns 22 next month (February 24th) so he will not need to be part of the Premier League 25 squad that we play for the rest of the season.

The fact that Gordon is only 21 means that Eddie has a young lad who we have to believe has talked to the boss on what will be required of him at Newcastle, and Eddie feels the lad is worth £45M to the side.

Gordon’s physical style and fast pace fits right into Newcastle’s new way of playing, and we can see him now marauding his way down the left wing in full flow.

He will also be able to get some good training in with the squad before he makes his Newcastle debut, probably against West Ham at home on Saturday, 4th February, with a 5:30pm kickoff time.

It’s also possible the media overplayed the bit about him not reporting to Everton training for 3 days – some of those days were official time off – according to the latest press reports on that.

There’s certainly a good player in there, and we are quite sure Eddie Howe can get the best out of the 6ft tall forward, and sooner rather than later.

What do you think?

Hope folks won’t mind this long post. I tried to share a few stats of Saint Maximin, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almirón and Mason Mount (#s are in percentiles in domestic competitions).

    non pen & expected assisted goals: 28, 19, 16, 39
    shot creation: 70, 9, 14, 59
    pass completion: 16, 6, 83, 56
    progressive passing: 46, 6, 45, 77
    dribbles completed: 99, 47, 41, 18
    touches in attacking pen box: 43, 33, 50, 53
    tackles: 2, 97, 89, 84
    interception: 37, 67, 63, 33
    blocks: 1, 99, 60, 77
    clearance: 1, 83, 77, 51
    aerials won: 35, 62, 17, 45

It appears Anthony Gordon may not create goals for us although he will make us stronger defensively. With him Eddie would also have a lot of flexibility to juggle with our lineup. Although Saint Maximin is suspect defensively, he is a much bigger threat up front. Especially over the rest of the season when many lower half teams will try to grind up points his utility may come handy. I’m therefore not sure whether he can be written off as some are suggesting.

I thought when describing a top player, the phrase was top, top.

Is a tip top player better than a top top player or is it somewhere between top and top top? I’m concerned that it may be sub-top.

I still really hope we get Matheus Franca. He seems to be an incredible talent from the little I’ve seen and read.

I’m afraid I think this will be a very underwhelming transfer window- Gordon and nothing else but I’m still hopeful (dreaming) we’ll get Maddison and Franca (and maybe Alan Varela!).

On Fraser, we’d give him away wouldn’t we? Came on a free and therefore no doubt high wages. Just having someone take that on may be enough.

I think there must have been a bit of a barney there. He was doing well – though, of course, Almiron’s form has surpassed Fraser’s best, he is more threatening than Murphy and probably better than Ritchie in an attacking sense nowadays.

Time will tell if he is worth the money. I reckon he is, mainly because the market is mad. £45m is becoming the base price for a decent player.

40-45 million too expensive!? Chilwell £50 mil, Grealish £100 mil to name a few. English players price are always over inflated; he’s 21 and has some great attributes, he can become great under Eddie. Trust the process

@1:11pm aah Jail will you ever stop with these posts that are designed to trigger people and nothing more. Why is it some days you get perfectly rational conversations out of you and other days all you seem like you want to do is trigger people. Will you give it a rest like you’re a grown man in your 40’s.

NOBODY thinks the sky will fall in if we dont get champions league, it’s just a huge opportunity right now to get it considering the position we have worked hard to find ourselves in. It speeds up everything through prestige and influx of more money than expected. Surely you would rather it takes us 2 years to establish ourselves in the top 4 rather than 4 years or however long it would take.

Stop trying to trigger people with statements you know yourself are nonsense and be normal will ya!

Welcome to the Toon Anthony Gordon, even if we don`t sign another player this window it will still be a magnificent transfer window. Forget all this total nonsense oh oh look at Chelsea look at how many players they have signed, history tells you it very rarely works in football when you try to buy a team, look at Chelsea indeed, then look at where they are in the league table 😀 😀 We have the best manager and best backroom team in the league, plus best owners in the world, we are building a team, it`s the way to go, you know it makes sense HWTL.

Everyone gets at shocked at price tags when we buy a player, then in 18 months time when comoaring against prevailing prices we all say we got ’em cheap.

The price we pay really isnt that important (please dont quote FFP because thats managed by accountants at another level)…whats important is the players we buy improve the squad…and there’s no doubt whatsoever Gordon improves the squad and gives us options we didnt have when we didnt have him!

A damn good signing in my book!

Really surprised at the result of the vote above (up to now).

56% to 44% in agreement over the Gordon fee..

So that’s just under half of the voters, disagreeing with our management/recruitment team.

    Unfootingbelievable Jeff……

Let’s get behind Gordon and then question if he is worth the money??? You what.
That’s a crass way of getting behind the lad.
He is actually worth the money. 100 per cent.
Has he upset you or what? I have been on here 15 years and that’s the first time you have questioned whether aToon player is worth the money. Normally it’s a bland “a good addition to the squad “ when many are not.
This lad is quality and you need to get behind him. And stop all this nonsense about his looks please. He has a Lamborghini and will pull whatever he wants. As Crouchy said Without football I would be a masturbator” and just look at his missus.
Welcome aboard Anthony. And you are going straight in the team

Ash, agreed. If the management etc think he’s worth £40M + add ons then he is, end of.

Fans can be strange, we all have opinions that’s fair enough, but what qualifies us to judge the worth of a player to the squad? Only Eddie/Ashworth/Eales & PIF can make those decisions and if they say yes. That’s it. It’s their money, not mine. 🙂

Wow if 44% don’t believe the management made the right choice they must be Mackem Scum.

A few years back when he was playing well and we were linked I thought most were like, let’s get him.

So I can only assume the Mackem’s are on here waiting for the game to start.

If we could get a player like Maddison for the 10 slot, what a first team we would have. They could go toe to toe with any team. Max Willock and Lobby would be quality to come off the bench

Pitch shenanigans aside, the lad hasn’t bothered to show up for training for three days. This doesn’t seen like a Howe signing, you know, with the right mentality. One bad apple and all that.

Gordon’s signing will kick us on to confirm champions league next year I believe.
Our sometimes “toothless” forwards will have help and with the emergence of Alexander Isak exciting times are ahead.
People critical of the £45 million fee need to give their heeds a shake. It’s not excessive and we have billions behind us!
    Howay the lads!

I agree with you about Gordon. He’s leaving Everton because they are stopping his ambition and knows we’re going places. Everton fc blocky his £60 million more to Chelsea last summer and he was determined to push this through!
By the way, Crouchie said without footie he’d be a “ virgin” not a “masturbator!

    Bit of a loaded question.

I’ll give him a run if games before saying is he ‘worth’ it.

If you have to answer it based on Everton games. You’d have to say No.

But he will certainly bring a value to the team. How well he does – we will see but he’ll need a decent run of games.

Most players are not ‘worth’ 10s of millions.

Wood wasn’t worth £25m but the value he brought to a run in was high. (helped relegation, weakened a rival)
