This was a really cool stop. They offer a treasure trove of historical information and artifacts on not just William Bonney but the area itself. It's definitely a must-see.

We visited the Billy the Kid museum today and enjoyed ourselves very much. I have always enjoyed Billy the Kid legend and stories. Don the owner was very sweet and knowledgeable, he showed us around the museum telling us stories about items. This museum not only has Billy the Kid pieces but items from people affiliated with the kid and local history. We also enjoyed Don showing us his family history collection. My husband and I wished we had more time to explore everything. We hope to come back someday!

The Billy the Kid Museum is right in town, and was much more than I’d thought it would be. While there are a considerable number of displays regarding the Kid, there is much more from general life in this part of New Mexico, up until the 1950s, but concentrating on the late 1800s/early 1900s. Everything from glassware and guns to saddles and secretarial equipment is there. Cars to toys. If they had a couple locomotive engines and an airplane from the 1920s, it would be complete.

As it is a museum dedicated to Billy the Kid, and there aren’t a lot of physical artifacts from his life, most of the exhibits about him were newspaper and magazine articles about his life and some of the plots, plans, and ideas to prove the body in the grave is really his (there have been a number of people who have claimed to be him). Of particular interest were photographs. According to contemporary lore, there is only one proven photograph of Billy in existence. However, there are several more that have at least an 85% chance of being of him. I’d read an article some time back about one of them, which said that that photo was the second known one. There are at least three others that are probably authentic that most people haven’t heard of.

We are western history buffs heading to Carlsbad, so we stopped in at the Billy The Kid museum for a dose of the Wild West outlaw. Lots of history about Billy but also a large and varied collection of old stuff. Enjoyed talking to Don, the 90-year old son of the museum’s founder (1953). We could have pulled up a chair and had Don entertain us for hours, I am sure. A fun and unusual stop.

this was a waste of time. It really did no have much to do with Billy the kid. The only thing that was good about it was the price

For $5 it was worth the stop to see this museum. It’s bigger than what it looks from the outside. Super clean bathrooms. I recommend this museum.

All the guns and the full story of Billy the Kid. The saved artifacts that his father had saved from the very early 1900's was amazing. The owner is 90 years old and full of knowledge !!!

If you are at all a fan of western history or antiques or just huge collections of memorabilia, stop here! They have some very cool items not only from Billy the Kid, but other historical figures, and a lot of interesting antiques that have been collected over the years. My son spent hours looking through all of the exhibits. The entrance fee is very reasonable and there is a pretty large gift shop attached. If you are in the area, this is a great place to stop for a bit and learn something.

A much larger museum than we expected, including lots of items related to life in New Mexico. Not all of them have anything to do with Billy the Kid or his era, but many of them do (including many objects that belonged to him) and the museum does a good job of documenting his life. A very enjoyable visit.
