I've been to that bathroom where Elvis died. Was in the elevator where Prince collapsed. Was outside the last house Michael was alive inside. Have seen the house and pool where Marilyn lived and died. Was in the last bedroom that Lee Harvey Oswald ever used. Saw the exact location of Bonnie & Clyde's last breath. May as well visit Billy too.

I saw the billboards, so I had to find the time to stop and see this historical grave site, even though no one is even sure where his actual body is. All in all its an interesting story.

I was in the cemetary alone, and got a pretty spooky feeling, telling me to leave now, right after I spent some time at Billy's site. I've seen ghosts walking at Gettysburg, at 1am with friends. Ever since, I don't question the feelings I get at cemeteries.

Billy is in an old graveyard that is fairly small. There are some information markers to add historical context to the people in the graveyard. This was on our way as we drove from Santa Fe to Austin TX. Not sure I would make a special trip here, but glad we stopped.

There's a lot of history here and at the Bosque Redondo museum next door, treat yourself to a visit. The story of Billy the Kid's headstone is amazing, you can see why they have bolted it to the earth with an iron shackle.

Billy the Kid is buried here, but so are other important historical figures from the region, including Lucien Maxwell and family. We were in the area to visit the Billy the Kid Museum, the Bosque Redondo, and the remains of Fort Sumner, and this was one of the stops on our list. It is a shame the building is no longer open to visitors, but the cemetery was easy to access and well maintained. Billy the Kid's grave is caged to protect the gravestone, which was stolen multiple times. He's buried with his closest friends, and he has a shared headstone and an individual foot stone. Other graves in the cemetery also deserve a visit. Though the area is a bit out of the way, it was only about 90 minutes north of Roswell and of interest to us for the history it keeps alive.

Fort Sumner, NM is an out of the way trip for Billy the Kid fanatics. I made a special trip to New Mexico to see his grave and death site among other places that Billy the Kid roamed in New Mexico. This was not a disappointment to me and well worth the trip. His death site is found near Fort Sumner (not the town, but the Fort itself). Walk out to the Fort remains and walk directly out from the flagpole towards the river. The marker is just past the unlocked gate.

Located at the site of Fort Sumner, a historic US Army Fort built to watch over the Navajo and Apache Indians who were forced to relocate to Bosque Redondo. Billy was shot and killed here by Pat Garret. You will see the tombstone has been shackled to its base and surrounded by a metal cage because it has been stolen in the past. Two of Billy's friends are buried alongside him.

Quick little stop near the Bosque Redondo memorial. Cemetery is open even when the museum is closed. Ample parking in the area as well.

This site is almost impossible to find and had to guess which roads to take based on the features of a state map. It was worth the visit because of the background that you could read on various signs. There was no charge. Plenty of parking and probably never really busy. If you are in the area, it is worth the stop.

Visitors center was closed Howe the cemetery was open. Always interesting to view the old grave stones. If you visit be sure to leave a bullet on the Kid’s grave.
