Wow. What a freakin' great album THIS is!
"Don't Say No" was Billy Squier's breakout album, led by the hit single, "The Stroke." But if that's all you know about this record, you are sorely misinformed. Top to bottom, this is a classic example of "all killer, no filler." If you were paying any attention to rock music at the beginning of the 80's, half of these songs will be immediately recognized. The opening threesome, "In The Dark", "The Stroke" and "My Kinda Lover" you will know. I'm telling you, even if you don't think you know these songs...you KNOW these songs.
And they are the perfect examples of radio-friendly early 80's rock, after the Styx/REO/Foreigner wave but before the hair-band/pop metal wave (and paralleling the New Wave time-wise). Crunchy guitars, towering drums, hummable melodies, memorable lyrics...this is so much better than you remember. Heck, this is way better than what I remember!
Back when there was side one and side two, side one continued with two more uptempo tunes, but flipping this sucker over rewarded you with an all-time classic tune, one that should be on every 80's lover's iPod playlist, "Lonely Is The Night". Here you have a killer melody, stop-start tempo changes, anthemic guitars, whip-cracking drums...it's a one-song distillation of this time and genre in American music.
The acoustic flavored tunes that follow are not as mind-blowing, but the Lennon tribute, "Nobody Knows" has grown on me over the years.
Finally, the album closer and title song, for me, was an undiscovered gem. I guess I kept replaying "Lonely" back in the day, and never let the album play out. I LOVE this song for the same reasons as "Lonely"...it's got all the same dynamics...maybe a bit more "drama" in the changes between the quiet segments and the rock blowouts. THIS is the song I kept replaying when I first got this CD.
And this is one awesome remastering! Compared to the previous ancient, original release, this is a revelation, with crystalline sound, expansive range and definitive sound-staging...all the instruments sound like they're in the right spots.
The two live add-ons don't add much...basically they just prove he's alive, and still performing somewhere. They're not exactly revelatory...
...but this remastering sure is. Buy this now. It's a bargain at twice the price...

A masterpiece work by an artist that vanished before his time.
Also I just wanted to say thank you to Boneyard Junction vinyl ( B4J) for this awesome piece of vinyl.
I ordered an original pressing of “Don’t say No”
It was in good condition and the vinyl played perfectly with no scratches or skips.
They also floored me by throwing in at no charge an original copy of Billy Squire’s “Emotions in motion” on vinyl.
This was also in good condition and played flawlessly.
I will definitely look to you again for classic vinyl in the future and recommend you to my friends.

One of my all time favorite records.

Ah yes, high school. Back then you could hardly turn around without getting hit up side the head with "The Stroke." I've never really liked that song, probably for the fatigue factor alone. So, for me, the songs in the heart of the album are the ones that still move me, "Too Daze Gone," "Lonely Is the Night," "Whadda You Want from Me," and "Don't Say No" for example.
As with most "remasters," this one does not disappoint. You get the requisite bump in volume but also a much fuller presentation of all the instruments and voices. The 2 live tracks at the end are fine, they're kinda fun but they didn't set my hair on fire. They'd have been cooler if they'd come from one of Billy's shows when he was out trying to conquer the world with these songs.
In the very off chance your kids want to hear what you listened to in the early '80s, Billy's album sure beats the crap out of playing them Loverboy, right? :-)
If you only have a first generation CD like I did, definitely get this. It'll give you an entirely new appreciation for an album full of great songs, no matter when you graduated high school.

You can time travel back to 1981 with this bad boy! Man, I forgot how much of an influence this record had on me. I am loving it all over again!

Taste in music is a personal thing, but to me this album has stood the test of time. Great songwriting and love the way the snare is recorded backwards on "Stroke".

As already acclaimed by another reviewer, this feels like a greatest hits album. Each time the next song comes on I'm thinking, "Oh yeah, sweeet, I'd forgotten about this one, how could I have forgotten this one!" The two live songs at the end were interesting to listen to and cool to know that he is out there doing what he loves. It also reminds you, that no one is getting any younger and that voices just like people age-which beats the alternative! Love, Love, Love this album!

Back to my youth

I first heard The Stroke when I was a mere lad and I recorded it onto cassette off the radio. That cassette was played over and over again as part of my limited music collection. As such those tracks had a big impact on my music preferences. I have found that I have now legitimately bought most, if not all, of the tracks off that tape.
This album is a fine example of old style rock music with some good hard tracks that have no comparison in the charts today. Although I bought the album for one track, the rest of the tracks are not disappointing at all and match it for quality with enough variation in style to keep it interesting. I would recommend any rock fan to have this as part of their collection to put alongside their UFO and Tygers of Pan Tang.

Good classic album.

Good used copy. No scratches on the vinyl. Cover a little faded but that's to be expected from an original 1981 album.
