キャンディ・ステイトンのフェイム録音再発盤は最高でした。あんまり嬉しくて、輸入盤のみならず分厚い解説本付きの国内盤まで買っちゃいました。どちらもCDでしたしね。
このベティ・スワンも大キャピトルの同系再発シリーズの一枚。店頭では圧倒的にCCCDが多いので（ジャケットがベティの斜めに向いたアップなので、識別し易いはず）、こちらのCD発売を待っていました。
しかし肝心の内容が今ひとつ！少なくともサザン･ソウルの爆発力や高揚感を期待している人には全く向きません。アップもスローも「飯食ってんのか？」と言いたくなるようなお行儀の良さ。ハイトーンが出ないことが最大の致命傷と思います。丁寧な歌い方には好感が持てるんですが、もう少しじっくり聴きこんでその味わいを噛み締めることとします。

I have had this CD over four years and have been trying to find the right words to give this review justice. Let's just say that Bettye Swann has one of the most unique voices in the soul/country/R&B genre; she has a style all her own and can sing anything and make you LOVE it!.

This particular CD, simply called Bettye Swann, has 22 tracks with some very interesting liner notes. Everything song on this CD to me is beautiful in it's own right and should have garnered a few hits, but alas we know the fickle nature of the music industry. I would however like to share with you some of my favorites from this great album.

1. “(My Heart Is Closed for The Season”- a cute slightly country influenced song with great lyrics that tell a story.
2. “I’m Lonely For You”- This song is on the top of my list and not only has a great melody, and excellent back- up vocals, but a sweet, smooth, mellow sound with a slick story line.
3. “Little Things Mean A Lot”- Her interpretation of this song is soul searching.
4. “Cover Me”- Has a cool laid back soulful groove with great lyrics
5. “Sweet Dreams”- This cover never sounded better and Bettye makes it hers!
6. “You’re Up To You’re Same Old Tricks Again- This fun call and response song has such fun lyrics.
7. “Stand By Your Man”- Bettye gives this country standard just a touch of soul, but stays true to the original.
8. “Angel Of The Morning” and “Traces”- These two last songs on the cd are my ultimate favorites. Bettye sings with and reminiscent sadness couple with a bit of hope and happiness; beautiful rendition.

If you have not heard of Bettye Swann I highly recommend that you check this cd out because you definitely won’t forget her!

Wenn man sich an Angel Of The Morning versucht, dann muss man es KLINGEN lassen, wenn man sich an Willie & Laura Me Jones wagt, dann muss es dunkel GROOVEN - und Words sollte man an besten gleich vergessen, weil das auch für Soft-Soul nicht taugen mag, zumindest nicht so. Ich kann mir vorstellen, die Brothers Gibb hätten das 74 hinbekommen....

Doch der gänzlich verschollene Geheimtip Bettye Swann hatte in ihren Capitol Jahren 1968 bis 1970 einfach den falschen Produzenten. Und wenn das Begleitbooklet feststellt, dass ihre Musik für einen schwarzen Markt produziert worden sei, dann ist das nur schwer nachvollziehbar, dafür schielt es einfach zu sehr auf weiße Kompatibiltät. Das ist nicht schlecht, umso mehr als Frau Swann über eine wirklich interessante Mittellagenstimme verfügt - es klingt nur alles gleich.
