After leaving Monticello, we headed to Woodbridge, Virginia.
Mileage from Charlottesville to Woodbridge: 95 miles ( approx 2 hours with traffic)
We stayed the night in a Holiday Inn Express which was in a great location next to several restaurants and a large mall. As Woodbridge is only 23 miles from downtown Washington, DC you could easily include a visit to our Nation’s Capital. Karen at www.nourishingtweens.com has a great detailed article about visiting DC click HERE to read more. Additionally, if you or someone in your group has not crossed Maryland off the list, Woodbridge is close to the Maryland state line.
As a family, one of our favorite things to do on a road trip is to listen to podcasts or play trivia games. On the way to Woodbridge, we did a lot of Presidential trivia. With our visit to Monticello complete and Mount Vernon planned the next day, it really made the boys excited to see these important historic homes.
There are several “add-ons” available when you purchase tickets. One of the most popular is the “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” guided tour. We opted not to do this, but we’ve heard really good things about this particular extra tour. If you’ve seen the movie, you know what this tour will cover.
It was about a 25-minute drive to Mount Vernon from our hotel and we were blessed with an absolutely beautiful, sunny day.
When you think about Mount Vernon as one of the most visited homes in America, it’s hard to believe it was almost in ruins when the Mount Vernon Ladies Association was formed to buy and preserve it. Remarkably, Mount Vernon was almost lost to history.
TIP: Buy your tickets for Mount Vernon online before you leave. It will save you a little bit of money and you won’t have to stand in line for tickets. We went right to the will call booth and began our day.
I am so glad you took the kids to see history revealed. The look on their faces is priceless.
We study history not to be clever in another time, but to be wise always.

Loved reading this post! Sounds like amazing visits! 🙂
Liz…Thank You so much!
We did a road trip around this area a few years ago. Great place. So full of history. Now we need to go back and see some of the things we missed. Thanks for the suggestions.
Angela….both are great places indeed! We plan to go back and hit some other spots as well the next time we travel to Virginia.
How interesting – these places are so full of history and do look so beautiful. I especially like Washington’s furnishing – he, obviously, had a very good taste 😉
Renata…definitely lots of history at both homes. The green paint at Mt. Vernon was pretty affluent for the time as it was difficult to make. George and Martha definitely had good taste!
Sounds like you had a very interesting visit! It’s no surprise that Monticello has been designated a UNESCO Heritage Site. I’d love to visit someday.
Lauren…..we certainly enjoyed our visit. Hope that you’re able to go soon and that you found this blog helpful when you do go!
Wow I have never heard of this UNESCO sight before! Also I love the next president Tshirt hahaha! The Xmas decorations would make a fantastic souvenir.
Anna….our youngest insisted on wearing that t-shirt the day that we visited Mt. Vernon and it couldn’t have been more perfect :). Ornaments (new and old) for our travel tree at Christmas is our most beloved family tradition.
Never really hears about Monticello, but it ooks like a nice place to spend a weekend. There is nice nature, history. I think it is perfect for a short trip.
Alexander…Monticello (and the surrounding Charlottesville area) is indeed a great place to visit for either a short or extended trip!
I love it! My friend told me about this blog, and it did not disappoint!
Cynthia…Thank You so very much for your post and glad that you enjoyed our blog! We always hope that people will enjoy the content and appreciate that you took time to comment!
I love history and there is nothing about this blog that I don’t like. You have provided a great amount detail and travel tips. Especially liked the “Key” that was given to Washington. I enjoyed this, Nicole, very much.
This trip seems lovely! About how long did the Mount Vernon part take?
All day? 1/2 day?
Hi, thanks for stopping by! To tour the house, the grounds and visit the museum (which is really good) you will need a full day. If you didn’t want to walk and explore the grounds you could do it in half a day if necessary.
