Product description
CD
Amazon.com
This is madness in action. Martha Argerich's Rachmaninoff Third is the fastest and most physically exciting you'll ever hear. She's recorded live, and the balances are a little strange as a result. You can also tell that Riccardo Chailly and his orchestra are having a hell of time trying to keep up with her, while anticipating what she's about to do next--but so what? This is as close as you can come to an experience of spontaneous combustion, and survive. The Tchaikovsky is, if possible, even wilder, with quite a few missed notes. But with an artist like Argerich, you simply can't judge the performance one note at a time. So go ahead: live dangerously. --David Hurwitz

It's great to hear Soviet Russian conductor Kirill Kondrashin leading the SBR (Symphonie-Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks).
Bryce Morrison marvels in the liner notes at Argerich's "inimitable touch of wildness, of untamed magnetism and charisma."
Indeed!
Competition in this field is tremendous,in the uncut Rachmaninov you will do well with the historic Van Cliburn/Kondrashin;Vasary/Aronovitch;Gabrilov/Muti; and recently Ansdnes/Berglund? In the abridged version Orozco/De Waart and Wild/Horenstein are supreme. In the Tchaikovsky I always return to Gilels/Mehta and the old Serebriakov/Mravinsky(Westminster LP vynil)if you can find it! Don't waste any time (as I did) to get this CD before Phillips (or whatever company owns them) decides to throw it out of the catalogue, to make room for some Lang Lang stuff.

In conclusion a transcendental performance of Rachmaninov's Third.
The Tchaikovsky First Piano concerto though undoubtedly a beautiful piece of music, pales by comparison.
Buy the disc primarily for Rachmaninov's Third.
