Go Behind the Scenes of Bridgerton with Bessie Carter
The actress shares her favorite photos from her "Bridger-two" album on her camera roll.
Returning to the set of Bridgerton was an emotional experience for actress Bessie Carter. Season one premiered in December 2020, amidst the United Kingdom's second lockdown, and the cast couldn't celebrate the global success of the show together.
"We were all shaken by the pandemic," Carter tells Town & Country. "So to come back [to set], to know that we were all tested and safe and that we could hug and squeeze each other, it was joyous. And, it was exciting to come back knowing how well it was received. It felt exciting and bubbly. We were all bubbling, fizzing like champagne."
Carter portrays the eldest Featherington sister, Prudence, on the popular Regency romance. In the first season, Prudence was inseparable from her sister Philippa (Harriet Cains), but the second season sees a plot focused more specifically on her character. "It was really exciting," Carter says of her bigger role, "but I also felt a little anxious, because [Harriet and I] were this double act. We worked out a lot of what we would do together, and try to make each other laugh. And then suddenly I'm thinking, oh god, how does Prudence speak when her sister's not around? It was quite helpful, actually, because Prudence will have felt that, too, that, 'Oh my god, there's even more attention and pressure on me to attract someone.'"
Carter always knew she wanted to be an actress, from the first time she stepped on stage at age five. When she was 11, she played Henry VIII in Henry the Tudor Dude musical, and, she says with a laugh, "from that moment, I was like, I absolutely adore acting and want to do it forever." Her parents, actors Imelda Staunton, who is set to be The Crown's final Queen Elizabeth, and Jim Carter, who portrays Mr. Carson in Downton Abbey, always encouraged her to follow her acting passions, but stay in school.
"I hated school," Carter says. "The English school system is so flawed and and I wanted to leave when I was 16. I begged my parents. My dad said, 'Stick it out. You'll feel so proud of yourself that you complete it.' I really did feel that." So far, it's all worked out. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2016, Carter has gone on to have roles in Beecham House and Howards End, and Bridgerton marks her Carter's biggest role to date.
Here, Carter opens up her personal "Bridger-two" camera roll with T&C to share a few behind-the-scenes snaps from Bridgerton's second season.
