Julianne Hough has a new project that’s unlike anything she’s ever done before. The Dancing With the Stars host is publishing her first novel, titled Everything We Never Knew.

She announced the news on Instagram on April 16, revealing that the book has been four years in the making. “I wrote this back in 2020 and have been sitting on it for quite some time,” she said in a video. “I wanted to write a book that was truly about the universal themes of life. I went through a very, very challenging but also expansive time in my life. I hope that when people read this book, they see themselves on the page while also going into this supernatural, fictionalized story.”

She hinted that will be a “whole ecosystem” around the book, teasing: “There’s going to be a way to see it, there’s going to be a way to hear it, there’s going to be a way to move with it.” She added: “Just know that there is a lot coming.” Hough described the book as fiction with “lots of personal details.” Alongside the video, she wrote: “After four long years, my first book, a fiction novel, Everything We Never Knew, is finally ready to be shared with the world. This has been such a wild and transformative experience, and I truly can’t wait to share it with you all. Here’s to embracing the joy of transformation 🙌.”

The book was co-written with author Ellen Goodlett and will be published this summer through Sourcebooks. The official description reads: “A woman named Lexi realizes that she is able to feel other people’s emotions — and see into their personal memories — when she accepts an award for being her realty firm’s top seller, and experiences the traumatic accident of an audience member’s family.” The description continues: “Lexi’s new power allows her to help people, but at a cost – she must confront her past, which she has tried hard to surpress. Her choices catch up to her, however, when she gets a vision that her husband is in danger. Lexi must choose between confronting her ghosts or saving the person she loves most.”

In an interview People, Hough discussed the book’s important themes and what she hopes readers will get out of it. “It’s a very personal story about change, having the courage to leap into the unknown and the power that all of us can tap into once we know how to look for it,” she told the outlet.

Hough’s foray into publishing is only her latest career endeavor. She made her Dancing With the Stars hosting debut last year and is set to return for Season 33, along with co-host Alfonso Ribeiro. The former pro dancer and actress is also set to star in the upcoming Frankenstein film The Bride. The movie is directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and stars Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening and Penelope Cruz. Hough is also an accomplished entrepreneur and founded the dance and fitness platform KINERGY in 2018. In March 2024, KINERGY began offering in-person studio experiences with the opening of its first brick-and-mortar location in West Hollywood, California.

Everything We Never Knew will be released on Aug. 13 and is now available for preorder.
