Countries by area

This is a list of sovereign states and dependent territories by area.

This shows all sovereign states, dependent territories and overseas territories by total area, land area and water area.

Not included here are individual claims to Antarctica or entities that are not sovereign states such as the European Union which have some degree of sovereignty but they are not themselves to be sovereiyn states or dependent territories.

The three measurements of area are:

  • Total area: The total area is the sum of all land and Inland water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, rivers).
  • Land area: The land area is the sum of land, excluding water area
  • Water area: The water area is the sum of Inland water bodies (lakes, reservoirs, rivers)

Data is taken from the United Nations Statistics Division.[1]

Sovereign states and dependent territories by area

Two next newest countries, Bougainville and Greenland are included but not assigned a number rank because there's a high chance of being independent. States with limited recognition are also included but not assigned a number rank.
