jwcdood BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD includes a terrific cast, excellent direction, acting and production. That said, the story itself is a morbidly dark tragedy with not one single redeeming moment that should be categorized as utter horror without jump scares or other worldly monsters, this is it. If you're looking for entertainment? This is *definitely* NOT it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Alec C They say that blood is thicker then water, but is it worth killing for as well?! Two brothers attempt to pull off a robbery at their families jewelry store, only for it to go horribly wrong and the two attempt to cover up their involvement while the guilt eats away at them. A tragic story of familial ties and past misdeeds, leading to consequences that will echo throughout their entire lives! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review The Great John A From the Irish saying: "May you be in heaven a full half-hour before the devil knows you're dead". Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is a 2007 thriller about a heist gone very wrong after 2 brothers, fuelled with determination and greed, send a friend to rob a jewellery store and both of them die: the robber and the jewellery store owner, who's their mum! Fuelled with powerful acting and a unique storyline around it's belt, this film is very different compared to what you would think it is. Now I don't really see too much films that exceed what I believe it to be, but this is something refreshing and finally worthy of an enjoyable time. The Phillip Seymour Hoffman has one of his best performances here, which is saying something and Ethan Hawke was also a great addition too. The atmosphere never really dies out in this film and it keeps on building up tension in most scenes which is very impressive. Overall, while hard to follow, Before The Devil Knows Your Dead creates a rewarding, thrilling experience that is definitely necessary in modern cinematic experiences. Grade: A Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Chuck Houck C Ethan Hawke, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, and Albert Finney, all in the same film. How can you go wrong? Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review M7AMD A it had potential but it felt boring and long, While I enjoy the narrative of the story, I have to say that this movie's style is all wrong. The jumping back and forth in time structure makes it feel all over the place and, indeed, that it's a mess. It would have been much better if it had played out completely linear. The look is cold, the style holds you back from the action. The direction is one of my least favorite things about the film, Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review Jason P Decent movie, always love PHILLIP S-Hoffman - the pace is slow. Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online I enjoyed it all the way through the last second. Rated: A- Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg Time Out Rated: 4/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Jordan Hoffman UGO Suspense and action would be enough to seal this film, but the feeling of dread, that under different circumstances this could be us, makes this a heist picture for the ages. Rated: A- Aug 14, 2009 Full Review Kathy Fennessy Seattle Film Blog Fortunately, [Sidney] Lumet's hard work has paid off this time around--the title comes from the Irish toast, "May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead"--and he's currently at work on his 45th feature in 50 years. Rated: 3.4/4 Mar 17, 2024 Full Review Dimitris Passas PopMatters There is a lot of family drama in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, combined with bouts of suspense, and the finalé is fitting and satisfying. Nov 28, 2023 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre Paste Magazine With its frenetic editing, booming score, razor-sharp dialogue, loathsome characters, and early adoption of digital filmmaking, this is more akin to a bravura upstart making their second or third film than an old industry stalwart on his last hurrah.
