Beethoven, like Bach, should be played as though one was capable of fathering 22 children. It is not to be played in a passionless, mathematical manner. (This is not to say that only men can play these composers as they were meant to be played, as Clara Haskill, Marie Claire Alain, Zuzana Ruzikova, and Wanda Landowska can prove otherwise.) I am basing this review on the Hammerklavier and Tempest sonati, two of my favorites. Mr. Ashkenazy brings a passion into the playing (as well as a technical mastery) that brings them alive in a sense that Helmut Walcha and Karl Richter made Bach keyboard music an emotional, almost cathartic, experience. I will always think that Robert Casadesus was the ultimate pianist for Romantic keyboard, but Ashkenazy makes all thirty-two of the sonati live and stand alone as wonderful musical experiences for the listener. Too many great pianists, and the Twentieth Century had many, only recorded the 'warhorses', but there is not a movement on this recording that is not superlative and stand alone. The allegretto from op.31, no 2 (Tem[est) is as close to perfection as my limited musical knowledge can imagine. Not being a pianist personally, I cannot speak as a virtuosi, but as one who has listened for almost fifty years, this is a recording that would bring pleasure to to anyone who loves music.

This music is played to perfection. It is played on a modern piano so purists may want to look elsewhere. But for me, if you like Beethoven buy this set.

Was wary of buying a set of used CDs, even when described as being in excellent condition. They were as described: pristine condition. Happy as can be. And Ashkenazy's performances of the Beethoven Sonatas are superb.

Ashkenazy created a lot of buzz when he first began performing, after having done well in a number of piano competitions. My peer group were enthusiastic about this technically proficient new talent. But the buzz faded after a few years. Forgetting this and wanting a complete Beethoven piano Sonatas to enjoy along side my Schnabel, I bought this when it was first released. Only four sonatas into the set and I was reminded of why the buzz faded so quickly. I recently bought the Badura-Skoda set to compare with my favorite Gulda recordings. Immediately the electricity was there. And while returning it to the shelf found the Ashkenazy recordings. Not listened to for years. So on they went for a solid evening to see if I had changed, or my mind had changed.
- Sadly not.
But after all these years I finally understood what it is about Ashkenazy (and, for that matter Barenboim, whose original vinyl still sits in my collection. Not played for decades. - His playing (their playing) is technically accomplished/polished, but the music intelligence and insight just isn't there. Just not a deep reading of the score.
Perfectly serviceable and competent throughout. And it is not the "interpretation" that is at issue. Just that there is no conviction in the phrasing, compared with several other acknowledged masters. Especially, for me, Badura-Skoda. But there are others who are obviously deep inside Beethoven's score. And reveal it for our pleasure.
So: "It's OK" And that's OK.
- Sadly not.

with very odd sound: notably small due to low audio levels, coupled with an uncomfortably broad dynamic range, very unlike his exemplary Chopin recordings for Decca. Enjoy!

Nice recording. So you need eighteen more words, so you? How will these work? If you keep this up, I will never write another review.

These are the complete piano sonatas. My primary concern was what would be the quality of the recordings. I am happy to say that these are excellent. These and the complete sonata recordings by Gulda are both first rate. A pleasure to listen to.

Reviewed in France on October 16, 2013
