'We called our baby Bear Blaze because my husband and I met in a house fire': Kate Winslet reveals reason behind son's name

They met in unusual circumstances when a house fire broke out on Richard Branson's Necker Island where they were both holidaying.

And Kate Winslet has revealed that she and husband Ned Rocknroll wanted to mark their memorable first meeting by naming their first baby together Bear Blaze.

'Bear’s second name is Blaze because my husband and I met in a house fire basically, ' she tells Ellen DeGeneres during the Tuesday edition of her talk show.

'The house burned down and we survived,' said Kate. 'But we wanted something of the fire and so Blaze was the name that we came up with. Bear Blaze.'

The pair struck up a relationship after the fire in August 2011, which saw Kate rescue Branson's mother Eve from the blaze in the early hours of the morning. They married in December 2012 with baby Bear born on December 7 a year later.

Kate already has two children - a 13-year-old daughter Mia by her first husband Jim Threapleton and son Joe, 10, by ex-husband Sam Mendes.

'We were thinking about names during the pregnancy,' Kate tells Ellen. 'When I was pregnant with Mia and when I was pregnant with Joe I didn’t name them before they came out because I always felt like I just have to see them and see who they’re going to be.

'But of course, this time around there’s Mia and Joe and the whole pregnancy is about what are we going to call the baby. So it was really lovely actually they were very much included and we settled on Bear quite early on.

'A friend of mine when I was younger was nicknamed Bear and I just had always really loved it. And he was very much a bear. He was everyone’s shoulder to cry on he was a big bear hug, he was a great figure in my life and I just had always remembered him and so that’s where it came from.'

Ellen also quizzed Kate on whether Bear had taken her husband's bizarre surname - Richard Branson's nephew was born Ned Abel Smith but later changed his name to Rocknroll.

'People who know Ned they know he’s very much about irony and living life and having fun so he changed it to Rocknroll,' says Kate. 'He did do it before he met me.'

'Would you have objected to that?' asks Ellen.

Kate is currently doing the rounds on the talkshows promoting her new movie Divergent.

And she explained that she filmed reshoots for the movie just six weeks after giving birth.

'I said, "Are you high?"' she laughed during an interview for TODAY with E's Jason Kennedy. 'How am I going to do this?'

But in the end she found working empowering.

'I would feed, and shoot, and nurse... there's actually something really empowering about going, "Hell, I can do this. I can do all this,"'  said Kate.

'And that's the wonderful thing about mothers is that you can, because you must and you just do.'
