Justin Fields Living Up to the Hype
The hype that has surrounded the Bears’ first-round pick since draft night has begun to spread across the country after Fields put on a highlight show in their preseason opener. The energy had remnants of Baker Mayfield coming on against the Jets in his rookie year. Fields went 14/20 with both a rushing and passing TD, but he was lucky to not get picked off and also recovered a fumble to avoid committing a pair of turnovers. Andy Dalton felt the need to remind us all he is still the starter saying on Bears FB Live “Justin Fields is going to have a great career but right now it’s my time.”
It was reported on August 18th that Fields did pick up a slight groin muscle injury and his status for preseason game #2 against the Bills is questionable.
Teven Jenkins to Have Surgery
Second-round draft pick Teven Jenkins is set to have surgery on his back, an injury that has caused him to miss significant time in camp as well as their first preseason game. Coach Matt Nagy is hopeful he will be able to return at some point during the season but it will depend on how his back takes to the surgery. This is a possible explanation as to why Jenkins dropped to the second round in the draft, as he was widely regarded as one of the top tackles in the draft, #3 ranked tackle per PFF from last season.
Peters New Home in Chicago
The Bears have signed longtime Eagle veteran OT Jason Peters to a 1-yr deal worth $1.75 million. The move makes sense for the Bears, especially given Jenkins’ back injury, and an emphasis on the offensive line from Nagy all offseason.
One to Watch
Matt Nagy has been impressed with rookie RB Khalil Herbert saying, “he’s really caught my attention. He’s very, very smooth. When he gets the football, you can see the burst that he has,” per Larry Mayer. Herbert had six carries and three receptions in their preseason game.
Green Bay Packers
Jordan Love Gets Minutes
Green Bay finally got to see their QB of the future in action during their first preseason game against the Texans. The good news? He looked good, especially for his first game. He was 12/17 for 120 yds and a TD. The bad news? He got injured. Fortunately, it does not appear to be a serious injury, with his status for their second preseason game being listed as questionable. However, it may be significant enough in the long run if it prevents him from additional live-action minutes.
Packers trade with Giants
Green Bay is sending CB Josh Jackson to the Giants in return for CB Isaac Yiadom, per Jordan Raanan. Yiadom started 10 games for the Giants last season.
Packers Adding Temporary Depth to the QB room
The Packers are re-signing QB Jake Dolegala while Love is out missing time, Dolegala previously spent time during training camp for the Packers earlier this summer.
Campbell Explains Unique Time Management Approach
Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell chose not to run the clock out in their first preseason game against the Bills. Instead opting to give QB David Blough and the offensive unit a chance for reps in high-pressure situations, as well as seeing how his defense looked in a game-deciding 2 min drill. He explained, “ordinarily, would have milked the timeouts of our opponent… You want to win the game, but you are also trying to evaluate these guys under certain circumstances. That’s really what the focus was.”
The Lions did lose the game, but Campbell is more concerned at the moment with building the right team to take into the season than their record in the preseason.
Lions Add Additional QB
Lions are signing QB Jordan Ta’amu, to add depth to the position. Ta’amu played college ball at Ole Miss and most recently started at QB for XFL team St. Louis BattleHawks.
Further Roster Moves
RB Craig Reynolds has been added to the squad as well as OLB Rashod Berry, while longtime long snapper and fan-favorite Don Muhlbach has been released after spending 17 years in Detroit.
Everson Griffin to Tryout for Vikings
Per Darren Wolfson and Chris Long, Everson Griffin is set for a tryout to potentially return to the Vikings, having left the team after the 2019 season.
Vikings Slimming Down Roster
Minnesota has waived CB Amari Henderson, WR Blake Proehl, LS Turner Bernard, DE Jordan Brailford, and kicker Riley Patterson, leaving Greg Joseph as the sole kicker on the roster.
Darrisaw Undergoes Operation
First-round draft pick Christian Darrisaw underwent a minor muscle procedure last week, but it is expected he will be ready to suit up for week 1.
