This is Eric Clapton's best record.
Borrowed from my uncle.
He warned me not to move across the country with this record.
Said he'd find me.
It's been gettin tons of airtime over here.
It'll give my uncle a reason to visit.

Good Album For Deaf Monkeys
Backless is the disappointing follow up to Slow Hand. Where everything magically worked and flowed effortlessly on Slow Hand, this album is the opposite. It's very disjointed and uneven. Side two is clearly the better side with the US Top 10 hit Promises and the US Top 40 hit Tulsa Time.
Alot of these problems could have been fixed with an improved song sequence. A deaf monkey could have done better. Poor Clapton is made to look worse than it is.

just good, easy listening
Yes, this by no means one of the best solo Clapton records, but damn is it just a nice clean record. The songs are lighthearted and just enjoyable to listen to, similar to those on "Slowhand". Standouts include "Walk Out in the Rain", "Tell Me That You Love Me", "Promises" and "Tulsa Time". Good record through and through, and a solid listen on a road trip.Published
No flat out bad songs, but a lot of boring stuff. The sound on the album is okay overall, but most of the tracks didn't have too much going on. "Watch Out for Lucy" and "Tulsa Time" are the best songs here. Overall, I'd call Backless a fine but forgettable entry in Clapton's discography.
3.0, okay album

Very similar in style to Slowhand, simple rhythm and blues songs with a slight country flair to it. The first two songs are in total continuation from the previous album, Roll it sounds like a Rolling Stones, Exile inspired track. Tell Me That You Love Me is a very nice Blues song, sung very well with enough sorrow in his voice. Early in the morning is a lengthy blues number but the delivery is flat. Promises is a clear single here and apparently did well, nice sing a long song. The album ends well with Golden ring and Tulsa Time.
Overall low energy but has some good songs
Highlights: Walk Out in the rain; Watch out for Lucy; Tell Me That You Love Me; Promises; Golden Ring; Tulsa Time

Very typical, easy-rolling Clapton album of its time - perhaps he could have waited a year or two for better inspiration instead of recording those similar-sounding albums year in and year out, but in all honesty its unrealistic to expect masterpiece every time. If anything, it resembles its predecessor just a little bit too closely, but without a standout hit single (country ditty "Promises" is pretty and mellow but hardly earth-shattering). Again the same sound, same band and Marcella Detroit sings backing vocals. I hear more pleasure in traditional "Early In The Morning" than in anything written by Bob Dylan or J.J.Cale so material is clearly an issue here, however guitar playing is masterful and authoritative as ever.

Once again it seems aliens may have kidnapped our hero and replaced him with some complacent laid back very average guitar player. To go from the Yardbirds to Cream to this stuff is almost shameful.
So much talent and so little effort. Over the next 27 years he will make one maybe two studio albums of any value. How does this poser live with himself?

After perking up on Slowhand, Clapton goes right back to sleep here. (Or maybe he's in an alcoholic daze?) The two Bob Dylan songs are the best thing here, and they're not that great either. A listless record.
