Once you've heard it, you'll never unhear it. BABYMETAL is a band that you'll either love or hate. Amuse producer Key Kobayashi delved into the unknown and fused Idol (J-Pop) and Metal, creating a sub-group of Sakura Gakuin: BABYMETAL! Having blossomed in Japan, they exploded into the Western world after their first album release in February 2014. Going on to tour the world within just four years of their creation, they really have taken the metal scene by storm.

We still don't have a clear answer, we will probably know soon enough. For now, the teaser said that it's a "side of Babymetal we never knew existed" (which could mean anything), and they mentioned a Digital Gallery that will open on April 27th showcasing songs and visuals of a parallel version of Babymetal. Basically, we have to wait to get an idea of what this all really means.

Thanks for actually answering the OP's question. And, OP: this is basically accurate.

They haven't told us, they are deliberately keeping it obscure.

For some reason all of the other replies I can presently see are either wrong ("NFT merchandise!") or fantasy guesses ("behind the scenes footage" or "a big virtual concert") or statements of the obvious ("it's a thing they sell you"). [Edit: that was true when I typed it. I'm seeing some other more helpful/useful replies appearing since then, which is good.]

Archival behind the scenes footage is conceivable. Some kind of virtual performance is conceivable. Some kind of "virtual world" is nearly guaranteed but doesn't narrow down the possibilities much. We've recently learned that people will have representations in this space that are sufficiently complex to be outfitted with customized shoes, since there might be a person or two (maximum: 10) in the space who won the auctions for the custom shoes that come with NFT-backed virtual representations. So it is likely that other kinds of outfit add-ons will become available, though I'm confident they won't be required for participation. The whole thing takes place over time, things are released in some order. My speculation is that there will be 10 experiences corresponding to the concepts on the images in the carousel ("Coffin", etc.). But some number.

So, it's some kind of virtual experience, but what comes in the black box that gives you access is not clear, what they'll do with that experience is not clear. There are warnings about the contents of the black box being susceptible to overuse or heat/water damage, and about being sharp. It does not have high system requirements (modern phone, or modern desktop computer). Beyond that, who knows.

We essentially know nothing of what they want to do, so we can only wait. If you want my personal interpretation of the teaser and predictions, I assume they're just gonna do digital (and why not, even experimenting with VR stuff) concerts while they wait for covid to die down and resume touring without risking any postponing dates, someone getting sick (especially the girls) or cancelling everything. So yes, I also think it's gonna be a digital experience of some sort.

I think the 10 concept images represent the 10 chapters of this parallel Babymetal, like the 10 Metal Resistance episodes. I think we're gonna go through them much quicker than 10 years though, maybe 10 digital concerts, one for each chapter? OTFGK.

I just think that there would be no need for teasing and cryptic messages if they just wanted to sell NFTs or other items to us. Which is why I believe that we will get something more than just digital merch out of The Other One. But as always, OTFGK. Let's see what happens on the 27th :)

u/zyzzbrah95 avatar

The images on the carrousel represent the 10 different kind of shoes they are auctioning. Or atleast the shoes have the same names than those images.

u/grumpylikethewolf avatar

Yes, there are 10 pairs of custom shoes that adopted those 10 names. It seems super unlikely to me that they refer to the shoes, surely the shoes refer to the names. There will be fewer than 10 people in the space with those shoes, probably zero (given that they will be bought by the shoe enthusiasts and NFT collectors, not by BM fans). There's pretty much no way those images are related only to shoes.

u/zyzzbrah95 avatar

I really hope you are right

I really want there to be a behind the scenes documentary style thing but at the same time I don't think they've ever really been great at translating things. I fear we'd get a Japanese video and we'd be waiting for a fan to make translations to English, not to mention any other language.

u/Scorunder_ avatar

Well, I feel like if they'd want to release something like a documentary for everyone they could hire a proper English translator, just like I assume they do for their site, teasers and lore videos. In the worst case, we have wonderful translators in our community that make Japanese-only content available in English, I wouldn't worry too much about that :)

That’ll be good i think but we have to wait 😩

a Digital Gallery that will open on April 27th showcasing songs and visuals of a parallel version of Babymetal.

The 27th could also be the potential day they announce the new album and show(s)/tour because if your playing snippets of new music, that tends to also really fuel album pre-orders if people like what they hear.

u/Scorunder_ avatar

I hope you're right and we get some new music-related stuff, even if it's just an announcement of the next single. I'm really curious of what they're gonna go for in the next album.

Perhaps a Babymetal sub-unit/spin-off band with new members/the Avengers getting their own project?

u/Scorunder_ avatar

The new Amuse pic of the band still shows Su and Moa in new outfits so I assume they're part of the band during this chapter, too. I think they just want to experiment with some new concepts and take risks while leaving the normal Babymetal and the normal lives untouched. But this is just my assumption, OTFGK what will happen :)

I Love Babymetal. The music, the dances, the videos. I can do without Koba's weird marketing.

The lore is really bad.

I think it means "Drink Your Ovaltine."

Here is an article I wrote trying to keep the information "concise" and accurate (I did add speculation at the bottom).

TL;DR:

Summary:

  • They are still sealed, no live shows yet.

  • The METALVERSE is a new “virtual” world, where a restoration project called “THE OTHER ONE” will reveal “a side of BABYMETAL we never knew existed”.

  • THE OTHER ONE – BLACK BOX (¥15,000) comes with never-before-seen photo cards that show BABYMETAL "in a parallel world" and access to the DIGITAL GALLERY.

  • THE OTHER ONE - DIGITAL GALLERY features an ongoing process of restoration of newly discovered songs and visuals. It opens on April 27th. 2021 THE ONE members can transfer their METAL names.

Related to this:

u/3TAL1ON avatar

Well thanks you for this 🤘

u/Kmudametal avatar

I'm surprised there have been no comments on what appears to be the new costumes, which you can see on Su. Looks pretty awesome to me.

u/Facu474 avatar

The same thing with the logo, it's on all their social media, but when I posted it, it gained much more traction than my THE OTHER ONE post lol

I think there are 3 things at play:

  1. It wasn't posted by BM anywhere.

  2. The post here is a link, which doesn't even show a preview... had the post been the actual image, there would have been lots more talk, I'm sure

  3. The outfits look not to be "usable", per say, kinda like their 2015 promo outfits, so many think it may just be for this image

u/Kmudametal avatar

I'm not sure we'll reach an agreement on the serviceability of the outfits. To me, looks like something they could take the stage wearing. The upper half you can see on Su and it fits right in as a progression from Legend S to Metal Galaxy to This. The shoulder pads/flares appear to be relatively soft, flowing material, more like a cape than armor. The bottom half you can somewhat make out on Moa and it appears like a cross between the Dark Side and Metal Galaxy skirts, more akin to Metal Galaxy... but different.

The upper half is very much Samurai'ish. The question would be if they are wearing some type of full sleeve simulated armor and gloves. That would not be serviceable, no.

My interpretation now is that the original Babymetal remains sealed, we are now getting to know the other one which involves a different "unknown side of Babymetal". Regarding the throne image, we obviously have a connection to Game of Thrones. In terms of lore, it was often more or less irrelevant. I suppose if someone (Koba - Metal?) likes something he just throws it in and leaves the rest to our (customer) imagination and interpretation (like Star Wars references, Avengers, Chosen Seven etc.). Nonetheless, there are some compelling motives here.

If you've seen Game of Thrones you already know that the series describes a dark, cruel fantasy world with few good people, many indifferent people and some bad people. The good ones die fast, they could become evil or could have been evil in the past and you never really know who's who (illusion). It's certainly the opposite of the classic romantic European tales of chivalry (photo says cavalry) like the mythology of King Arthur / Excalibur / Holy Grail, Parzifal, Lohengrin and so on (chaos represented by battle smoke / order represented by the throne). So maybe we'll get a darker Babymetal that would also fit the light/darkness (monochrome, transition) theme, the different mirrors (... but who actually am i?). The question is, is this all really new or is it what we already know? We already had the dark side, maybe now indifferent (blessing or warning, evil justice / power represented by the throne)? Journey - we already had a (space) odyssey? Nonetheless I can't wait to hear something new and I'm sure Babymetal won't disappoint. And who would not like to be a knight at our queen´ s service, but is it the old european myth or the Game of Thrones (or a samurai) one?

u/JMiguelFC avatar

Finally a Game of Thrones theory, been wating for it since day one. Thanks :)

I'm thinking Moa is plotting behind Su. She wants to be queen. Yui is waiting in Slavers Bay to see how it all plays out. XD

My best guess is its just the new The One and all that entails. I mean they have ended The One and lets face it it pretty much looks and sounds like The One with new branding.

You have at my guess The Other One which will be the new membership thing and then:

The Metalverse which its probably be the name of the next album and tour. Its not like they have any underlying theme or anything. Metal Resistence and Metal Galaxy its not a stretch to make any of these conclusions.

We will find out eventually but this is my view not quite as out there as many other peoples ideas, some of which are mind boggling to me but as said above its seems simple enough to me.

We don't know yet, best bet is to wait on27th, almost every comments here are speculative, except you know Otfgk

u/JMiguelFC avatar

Means the Fox God lore is alive and well, therefore Babymetal is fine too. Later this month we might have a clearer explanation for this (or not.)

u/FutureReason avatar

New third member most likely.

u/erimus61 avatar

In the context of Babymetal, "The Other One" is obviously Yui...unless it's something entirely different of course.

If Koba wants to be obtuse and drop little bits of esoteric lore then the acolytes are bound to interpret it in lots of ways. #notacult.

The Other One is, presumably, the next iteration of The One membership.

Lore-wise, it appears it is possibly going to be some alternate universe/multiverse variant of Babymetal with "new" music that I've speculated as being reworking some old songs. A backdoor way to update the lyrics to some songs so the ones that require 3 singers (i.e. Cmiyc) can be performed by 2 or turn Black Babymetal songs into Moa solos. And sure, they could've been doing those songs already but the only opinion on it that matters is Kobas and I could see him wanting to change it up so that the song is "refreshed" for lack of a better word. Think the shin version of babymetal death. Reworking stuff in that vein.

Having THE OTHER ONE be a continuation of THE ONE makes the most sense to me, though I'm personally still in the camp that believes that actual new stuff will come out of this whole BABYMETAL Restoration Project. But that's just me, wishful thinking lol

NFT MERCHANDISE 😑

Let's be clear, this almost certainly isn't NFT blockchain stuff. That always comes in limited quantities. This will be a photo and possibly some other stuff they aren't mentioning with a digital access code more closely resembling a video game access code.

u/3TAL1ON avatar

Oh it’s just that , okay thanks bro

u/zyzzbrah95 avatar

It's not only nft's (atleast I hope so). We will just have to wait until 27.4 to get the full picture of what the other one is

u/zyzzbrah95 avatar

"THE OTHER ONE – DIGITAL GALLERY

showcases the progress of newly discovered

songs and visuals that are to be restored in random order

based on the METALVERSE algorithm.

THE OTHER ONE Is a restoration project

in which no one knows

when, where, and what will occur in the foreseeable future

and something only the FOX GOD knows."

Atleast this text in the other one website makes me hopeful that we do get some music and some other stuff than nft's at some point

u/3TAL1ON avatar

Oooh that look cool

It's a behind the scenes thing... Photos, videos, interviews and the like. Maybe demo versions of songs, alternate vocals etc.

"the other one" means the other side of BM that we haven't seen before.

Something to get more money out of you

u/JMiguelFC avatar

A metal project trying to get some more money of you, such an heresy..hahaha.

Partnership with Meta in the Meta(l)verse, a huge VR concert!

I would like to think it has nothing to with VR and i don't know if the VR user base is large enough to warrent it. I know of many Babymetal fans who don't play video games let alone have VR.

u/3TAL1ON avatar

Oooooh 😌

u/moonsong99 avatar

I would love a VR concert but I'm sure it would just inevitably piss me off by not supporting PC headsets.

Spinoff story ala Darkside I think

There is some knowledge Mankind is not ready for...

u/3TAL1ON avatar

Why that ?

You know, going by Koba's cryptic lore shenanigans and secrecy.

I think they’re gonna capitalise on the v-tuber hype and make a virtual concert. So that the girls don’t have to be physically present while experimenting with new technologies.

Good question.

It translates "Koba is out for money"

If only "The Other One" was a reference to Yui coming back. I wonder how she's doing. Hope she's well and happy.
