Some famous writers, like William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, all passed away on that day. Also, UNESCO, a big group that works to help instruction and culture around the world, chose April 23rd to celebrate books and writers during their General Conference in Paris in 1995.

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.



The World Book Day books are a gift to children from booksellers and publishers. World Book Day works with publishers to create a list of £1 books to appeal to a wide range of children at all ages, interests, and stages of reading. Publishers suggest titles and a selection panel chooses from these submissions.

It is about celebrating reading all year round, not just on the day. You can find activities, resources and advice on our website to help you enjoy and encourage reading for fun throughout the year. You can also support us by donating or fundraising for our charity.

What is the theme for World Book Day 2024? The theme for World Book Day 2024 is “Read Your Way”. Explaining this year’s theme, the charity said: “World Book Day 2024 will celebrate that children are more likely to enjoy reading when their choices are championed and we make reading fun.

World Book Day can be celebrated by Featuring iconic characters from beloved books such as Gangsta Granny, Ratburger, Billionaire Boy, Mr Stink, Awful Auntie, and even The Boy in the Dress. Discover the many humorous characters from his storybooks that have become an absolute hit among kids on World Book Day, inspiring delightful fancy dress choices!

It is organized by a registered charity, whose mission statement is to give every child and young person a book of their own. It was first celebrated in 1995, World Book Day is a time when the joy of reading can be appreciated and celebrated, in over 100 countries around the world.

The event is all about book discussions: Facilitating discussions about students’ favorite books, encouraging them to share their thoughts, opinions, and recommendations. Author study: They have to choose a renowned author and explore their works, writing style, and contributions to literature.

This auspicious occasion is a perfect opportunity to remind children of the importance of reading and it really helps to spark their enthusiasm and get them excited to pick up a new book. Stories offer a child so much and play a vital role in their growth and development.
