- CasandraTPSydney, Australia1,094 contributionsAmazing museumWe knew very little about American Western history and this informative museum changed all that. It has some amazing displays and artefacts from the famous and infamous that I thought I would never see. Currently there is a pop culture section called Imagined Wests which is fun and shows a modern twist. I would have liked to have seen more about the indigenous culture but the museum is a must see for anyone coming to LA.Hi Casandra, Thank you for your review! - phvi2617Anaheim, California562 contributionsExploring the American WestThis is a really nice museum that provides a range of views on the American West. The new Reclaiming El Camino exhibit was eye-opening, but it seemed to over-generalize to a degree. The other exhibits focused on art, historical artifacts, and ecology. Particularly interesting were the galleries about the Sherman Indian School and Western art themes. There are really amazing collections throughout, and it's well worth a visit.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 31, 2023
- Andrew Q334 contributionsMuseum and Art GalleryThe museum is mostly about native Americans and combines stories with contemporary art which was not of much interest to me. It is part art gallery I would say. It has a good exhibition of historic firearms, rifles and revolvers. There was also an exhibit on Griffith Park. It is a bit out of the way so you need to drive to get here. There is a cafe although it was closed when I was there.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 23, 2024

I loved it! This place is full of art, artifacts, galleries, exhibits, and stories. I spent quite a few hours here and enjoyed every part of it. I learned a lot and gained a new appreciation for this part of history.

This is an interesting museum to learn about western movement to California. Volunteers set up carts around the halls to give visitors hands-on experiences. I've been here with three different classes for field trips and the kids all learned something. Usually they like the gold guns, panning for gold, and the hands-on stuff. It's worth a visit.

The Autry Museum displays are uninspiring.
What is described as Western is actually nNativeative American, Mexican, or current pop culture. There is a video that describes how Western history is the rape of indigenous cultures. Any good Western history is described as a myth. There is no description of the benefits or wonderful aspects of Western culture.
There is no Gene Autry at the Gene Autry Museum. After searching for any display of his, I finally asked. There is one 5 by 7 display of his outfit on the backside of a pillar facing the kids area. No one would see it unless they ask.
If you like Mexican/Hispanic history, there is a little. If you like Native American displays, there are a lot but it is done much better at other museums. If you like Western History, there is none.
In the lower back part of the museum, there is a nice display of guns and some Western relics.
There are plenty of weird displays such as fake deer whose heads turn into gold ribbon. What a waste of time and money.

Happened to be in town during celebration of a special anniversary for Griffith Park, we had a wonderful time checking out the exhibits, and were lucky to see presentations by a few writers. Lots of room for exhibits, layout is easy to navigate, and the exhibits were truly fascinating. It's a good day out.

Nice surprise when we went on New Year's Day as the admission was waived. So much more in the museum than information about Gene Autry. Articles and clothing from western movies, videos, and even an interactive "horse" to ride with a video in the background that was enjoyed by kids and adults. Nice restaurant on site, too.

If you have any interest in the American West, the Autry is a place for you. A wonderful collection of artifacts from the "Ol' West" including Billy the Kid's rifle and a great collection of Colts. This is truly a hidden gem of Southern California

We had never visited, but I'm glad we did! Such a broad exhibit of the American West. From native cultures, thorough the settlement of the west, to the west in media, it is here. The quick tour was just that, but a goid overview of what's available to base the rest of your visit. And free parking in LA? Who knew?

We are travelling to California December 2016 and would like to visit the Gene Autry museum. We are not sure where we will be staying, probably Anaheim although we may stay a few days somewhere around Hollywood. Are there tours from hotels to the Gene Autry Museum or do you need to make your own way there - we will not have a car.
Thanks,

Not sure about tours. Suggest using Uber or renting a car...Costco has great rates for members. Might want to check Burbank area hotels since Disney and Warner studios
in area.
