The Goalkeepers

Mat Ryan

Debut: 05/12/2012 v North Korea
Socceroos Cap Number: 555
Socceroos Caps: 75
Major Tournaments: FIFA World Cup 2014 & 2018, AFC Asian Cup 2015 & 2019, FIFA Confederations Cup 2017
Current Club: FC Copenhagen, Denmark
Junior Club: Blacktown City FC (NSW)

Australia’s most capped player currently in the squad, Mat Ryan, has been a stalwart between the sticks for nearly a decade. The 30-year-old has been a part of the previous two World Cups – starting all six matches – and won the AFC Asian Cup 2015, playing an instrumental role, collecting the Golden Glove award along the way. Mathew Leckie is the only other member of the squad to have also represented Australia on the world stage in 2014 and 2018.

Ryan flourished at Central Coast Mariners and avenged the grand final heartache he experienced two years later as the Gosford club won the championship in 2013. Ryan moved to Belgium to join Club Brugge for the 2013/14 season, where he once again starred and was named Belgian Pro League Goalkeeper of the Year in his two seasons at the club.

He later signed a long-term deal with Valencia in 2015, however would only make 10 La Liga appearances over the next two years before securing a move back to the Belgian Pro League with Genk in search of regular first-team football. Ryan’s form in the Belgian top flight secured a move to English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion ahead of the 2017/18 season. His time in England ended with a six-month loan spell with Arsenal, the club he grew up supporting as a kid before switching again to La Liga with Real Sociedad. In the European summer of 2022, Ryan put pen to paper on a two-year contract with Danish powerhouse FC Copenhagen.

Andrew Redmayne

Debut: 07/06/2019 v South Korea
Socceroos Cap Number: 603
Socceroos Caps: 4
Current Club: Sydney FC, Australia
Junior Club: Gosford City Dragons FC (NSW)

Andrew Redmayne sealed his spot in Australian football folklore, by making the save that sent Australia to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. The goalkeeper was substituted on for the penalty shootout in the Socceroos' intercontinental play-off victory over Peru, with his moves earning him 'the grey wiggle' nickname that was celebrated nationally and internationally.

Redmayne has built a reputation throughout the A-League as one of the toughest competitors with his stock growing over time. The Gosford-born shot stopper has amassed more than 160 appearances in the A-League throughout his 13-year career, particularly excelling with Sydney FC since joining the Sky Blues in 2017.

Danny Vukovic

Debut: 27/03/2018 v Colombia
Socceroos cap number: 595
Caps: 4
Major Tournaments: FIFA World Cup 2018
Current Club: Central Coast Mariners (Australia)
Junior Club: Bonnyrigg White Eagles (NSW)

Danny Vukovic earns a call-up to Australia's FIFA World Cup squad having been a regular figure amongst the squad throughout the entirety of the qualification journey.

Vukovic's first appearance for Australia at senior level remarkably came 12 years after his initial call-up for a 2007 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait. Then with Central Coast Mariners, with whom he would spend five seasons, the strong shot-stopper spent much of the intervening period at Perth Glory.

Initial attempts to hatch a career overseas with Konyaspor and Vegalta Sendai didn't work out, but a commanding 2016/17 campaign for Sydney FC finally catapulted Vukovic into a starting position with Belgian outfit Genk and a welcome first appearance for the Socceroos. Vukovic's protracted Socceroos debut eventually arrived against Colombia on his 33rd birthday, where he memorably gave away a penalty late in the match but atoned for the error by beating away the spot-kick to preserve a 0-0 draw in London.

After three successful years with Genk, where he won a historic league Championship and secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League, Vukovic departed a fan favourite in early 2021. After a season with Eredivisie outfit NEC Nijmegen, he announced a return to where it all began in the A-League Men's competition, signing for the Central Coast Mariners ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Aziz Behich will be appearing in his second FIFA World Cup, having showcased his immense leadership qualities within the Socceroos' backline. The Melbourne-born left back was in and out of the national team set-up after making his debut in 2012 but was finally called into the 2015 AFC Asian Cup squad, and has since become a regular in the Socceroos camp.

Behich’s form for club and country saw him secure a move to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in 2018. However, he only spent a season in the Netherlands before moving back to Turkey to join Istanbul Basaksehir, winning the Turkish Süper Lig for the first time in their history.

In 2020/21 he spent time on loan with Kayserispor, successfully helping keep them in the Turkish top flight, before replicating his heroics in the season after, guiding a Giresunspor side to safety, making 34 appearances during the 2021/22 season, at the heart of his side's defence. In July 2022, Behich embarked on a new challenge and signed with Scottish Premiership side Dundee United and since impressing with the Tangerines.

The 28-year-old now calls Ohio home, having signed at the beginning of 2022, with Major League Soccer outfit Columbus Crew.

After narrowly missing out on Championship promotion on a number of occasions, the centre-back finally got his fairytale moment with the Black Cats at the end of the 2021/22 season, with a dominant display in the play-off final, defeating Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

His run in the League One play-offs was enough to ensure selection for the Socceroos crucial matches against Peru and the UAE, as the 30-year-old capped off a season-defining month, with FIFA World Cup qualification.

Another Scottish-born Socceroo, towering defender Harry Souttar immediately established himself as a cult hero in Green and Gold. At 1.98 metres, he is the tallest outfield player to have ever represented the Socceroos and used it all to his advantage, heading home six goals in his first five internationals.

The 24-year-old joined Stoke City from Dundee United in 2016 but following loan spells with Ross County and Fleetwood Town, it would not be until the 2020/21 season where Souttar would establish himself in the first team. He suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury while on international duty against Saudi Arabia in November 2021 but fortunately managed to recover in time and be selected in the final 26-man squad.

Karacic has since become a regular starter at full-back for Brescia as they continue to push for first division football, having accrued over 30 appearances for the club in 2 seasons. The 26-year-old was originally introduced into Arnold's squad, as an avenue to add strength and depth in the right-back position. However, the defender has exceeded all expectations in the Green and Gold.

The Tasmanian-born full-back is among several the Socceroo's brightest young stars, heading into the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, having translated his impressive form with Graham Arnold's Olyroos side during the Tokyo Olympics, into a successful qualification campaign, with the 23-year-old involved in both of Australia's crucial play-off victories in Doha. Atkinson’s impressive form with Melbourne City – where he opened the scoring in the 2021 A-League Men’s Grand Final – culminated in a transfer to Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian in January 2022 and has taken his game to another level, becoming a regular at right-back.

One of Australia’s most promising defenders, Joel King, excelled at Sydney FC before sealing a move to Danish Superliga outfit Odense BK. The 22-year-old's first opportunity for the national side came during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, as Graham Arnold rewarded the domestic form of the defender, starting King in all three of the Olyroos’ group matches during the tournament.

The transition from Olyroo to Socceroo has been seamless for King, who was involved in two crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers earlier in the year, making his debut against Vietnam, before a 90 minute effort in his home state against Japan.

Junior Club: Palm Beach SC (Queensland)

The last of the debutants during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, Graham Arnold's selection of young centre-back Kye Rowles prior to the inter-continental play-offs proved a masterstroke, with the defender producing two man-of-the-match performances through the heat of Doha, against difficult opponents in the United Arab Emirates and Peru.

Rowles’ career in the A-League Men’s competition began at Brisbane Roar before joining Central Coast Mariners in June 2017, initially signing a one-year deal with the team. Rowles outlasted that deal by a matter of six seasons, becoming instrumental to the Mariners’ revival during his 104 appearances.

Arnold selected Rowles in his squad for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games with the tournament being a rehearsal for the role that the 24-year-old would play within the Socceroos set-up, just one year later, in Qatar. Prior to helping guide Australia to the World Cup Finals, Rowles signed with Hearts, joining compatriots and fellow Olyroo graduates Nathaniel Atkinson and Cameron Devlin.

Deng’s professional career began with Melbourne Victory during the 2015/16 season, and following a season-long loan at Jong PSV, would remain at the club until 2020. He moved to the J1 League in 2020 signing with Urawa Red Diamonds. He also made his debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021 and the following year with Albirex Niigata, helping the club secure promotion to the Japanese top-flight. Aaron Mooy figures as arguably one of Australia's most important players in the midfield engine room, responsible for dictating the tempo of matches. The 32-year-old has been a regular in the Socceroos system since 2015 as he heads to his second FIFA World Cup. He laid the foundation at Western Sydney Wanderers and spectacularly hit top gear with Melbourne City, an irresistible run of form proving impossible for parent club Manchester City to ignore.

Sent on loan to Huddersfield Town, Mooy proved a hit in the Championship as the club won promotion and parted with £8million to take him on a permanent basis, a decision he justified by helping them avoid relegation in their first season, the second season was less fortunate for The Terriers, culminating in Mooy's departure to Brighton in order to retain regular top-flight football.

He had a highly profitable first year with the south coast club, making 33 appearances as they secured their highest points tally in a Premier League season. However, the midfield maestro departed Brighton in August 2020 to link up with Chinese powerhouse outfit Shanghai SIPG and in July of this year linked up with Ange Postecoglou's Celtic on a two-year contract.

After finishing his debut season in England with 10 league goals and Burton's player of the year award, he was rewarded with a move to Hull City.

The midfielder spent three seasons at Hull and wore the captain’s armband on a handful of occasions in his final season at the club. After 11 months without a club, Irvine returned to Scotland in January 2021, signing for Hibernian.

He immediately impressed with Hibs, establishing himself as a starter alongside his international teammate Martin Boyle. Irvine carried his form onto the international stage, finishing with more goal contributions than any Socceroo during round two of qualifying.

Following the international window, he sealed a move to German outfit FC St. Pauli. After a season-and-a-half of strong performances, he is now co-captain of the club and recently signed a new long-term contract extension.

Jason Cummings marked his international debut with a goal against New Zealand, converting a penalty in a 2-0 friendly win at Eden Park. Born in Scotland, Cummings is eligible to play for Australia due to his Australian mother.

The striker started his career at Hibernian, scoring 71 goals in 150 appearances before earning a move to Nottingham Forrest in 2017. Three loan spells at Rangers, Peterborough United and Luton Town followed until he signed permanently with Shrewsbury Town. In 2021, he returned to Scotland to play for Dundee and at the beginning of 2022, the 27-year-old agreed to join Central Coast Mariners, scoring 10 goals in 21 matches of the 2021/22 A-League Men season.
