About the maps
These climatology maps were generated from station data (for example rainfall), satellite and satellite-derived data (for example solar exposure or modelled data (for example solar ultraviolet Index).
The mean value, also known as the average, is one of the most common statistics used to provide an estimate of what is most likely to happen. It is not necessarily equal to the most commonly occurring value, which is known as the mode, but for most elements it will be close.

An objective analysis technique is applied to the station-based data to produce regular gridded datasets covering Australia. Satellite data and model output are already in the form of regular gridded datasets, so no further analysis is required. The maps are produced from these gridded datasets.
