Most people who know of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis know them only from their other bands: The Dirty Three, The Bad Seeds and/or Grinderman. Then there are those few who know them only from their fine recent work scoring movies who would likely be surprised to hear their more radical sides. Both men, but especially Cave, are musical polymaths who are forever stretching their talents to probe new frontiers. The soundtrack for The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford represents the serious sides of both Cave and Ellis and shows their fans what more they are capable of beyond their alternative goth rock foundations. The music on this CD has cross-generational appeal and establishes Cave and Ellis as men who will likely be called upon to score many future films.
I haven't yet seen the movie, so I don't know the contexts in which each song is featured in the film. But I can hear the desolate, somber strains of music calculated to induce a certain mood and to set a scene that the listener can envision in his mind's eye. And though I find it difficult to term any soundtrack a masterpiece due to their fragmented natures, this is one that comes awfully close.
If you enjoyed the Cave/Ellis soundtrack for The Proposition, you are certainly going to like this. If you are a Cave/Ellis fan of their other musical lives and have not yet heard one of their soundtracks, you are in for a rather shocking surprise. The buyer gets nearly 45 minutes of dark, atmospheric music and a very attractive booklet featuring essential data and scenes from the film. Don't miss this!

Music as unique as the movie. The movie feels like an impression; a memory; a haunting. It is a collective history that is rendered poetically. As I watched, I kept noticing the music. The composers deliver the same unique quality to the music. There is the intensely flowing aspects that feel more modern along with the more rustic and folk-like feel of the violins (fiddles?) that attach the particular haunted feel to the underlying intensity of the other instruments. As for the movie, even though it catches up to the Jesse James Gang in their 11th hour, it is a complex and intense 11th hour. It is one of dichotomy that we only thought we knew - the "robbin-hood-outlaw" and the "cowardly assassin", and yet the movie and the music tell us this dichotomy is not really what it seems. There was something truly fragile and unstable about Jesse, and there was something much deeper and tragic about Bob. The music is as much worth getting as the movie. BEAUTIFUL!!

I must wag my tail on this one. The instrumentation of piano, violins, cello, violas, Celeste, triangle, Hohner guitaret, electric bass, and drum filled me with satisfaction. Put on your headphones, close your eyes, sip some wine, and allow the flickering of a candle in a darkened room dance across your eyelids as this music takes you to another time in space. I found the compositions to be dark and moody, rich, vibrate, soothing, and wonderfully disturbing. Music like this is hard to find. The arrangements and the orchestrations have a timeless quality about them. They're simple, yet complicated, much as I imagine Jesse James was. I highly recommend it.

"The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford" : A huge, sprawling, operatic western movie that brings to mind the very finest offerings from Sergio Leone.

With regards to Leone's westerns, how integral was the music of Ennio Morricone to the finished product? VERY integral! Put simply, those films would not be the same without the stirring music infusing each sweaty, elongated scene.

The thing is, to my mind, Cave and Ellis have actually bettered the soundtrack maestro Morricone with this release. This music is remarkable. Each tune is dripping with emotion, featuring melancholy minor chord changes executed on piano and strings. Warren Ellis' violin work is stunning - he makes the instrument ache and sob and scrape and cry. I have listened to these compositions on repeat play and literally weeped like a baby!

I was going to use this review to pinpoint highlights from this album, but - to be honest - I can't. Every tune is a winner. Just when you think the sounds can't get any more heartbreaking...THEY DO! This is the kind of music that evokes feelings of nostalgia, loves lost; a beautiful, irredeemable past.

I listened to this album with my brother last night. As the last tune "Song For Bob" played out, my bro uttered (without any kind of irony): "That is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard."

And d'you know what? He was right.

I urge you to buy this album. No, scratch that - I IMPLORE you to buy this album!

A final word - thank you to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis for enriching my life. I will take this music to the grave with me.

After I had watched the incredible movie, I looked up the soundtrack and bought the CD and it does not disappoint!

This emotive and beautiful music; takes me back to a movie I remember fondly, helps me to concentrate on my work and soothes me which no music has been able to do before!

My only qualm is that one of my favorite songs (All things beautiful) is not on this CD but you can easily access it on youtube.

Where my generation bops their head to Skrillex's as they look forward to their next concert, I sit back, relax and close my eyes as I drift away to a time long gone but not forgotten.
