Scotland by train

Hi Forum,

I'm planning an early May 2024 trip to Scotland for 10 days. Prefer not to rent a car and don't want to be part of a tour. Is it possible to see Scotland by train / boat / bus and maybe an occasional private driver for a day when other options aren't available? Any recommendations here on how to book this from a trusted source? We are active and want to walk / hike and explore the beauty Scotland has to offer during the day and have awesome places to stay in the evenings. Thanks for any ideas. We will likely fly into Edinburgh from Florida.

I would start with the Scotrail website and look at the network map to see what’s possible. Have you got accommodation booked?

It varies - where are you wanting to go?

Not by train alone but combined with bus/taxi, yes you can get to more places but be aware that public transport in some parts of the Highlands and other remote areas can be sparse and don't plan to do any major travelling on Sundays, which is when train/main coach services are at their lowest frequency and local services, minimal to non-existent.

Private drivers are expensive - around £500 per day is a reasonable ballpark figure.
