A Time Best YA Book of All Time

Margaret shares her secrets and her spirituality in this iconic Judy Blume novel, beloved by millions.

Margaret Simon, almost twelve, likes long hair, tuna fish, the smell of rain, and things that are pink. She’s just moved from New York City to Farbook, New Jersey, and is anxious to fit in with her new friends—Nancy, Gretchen, and Janie. When they form a secret club to talk about private subjects like boys, bras, and getting their first periods, Margaret is happy to belong.

But none of them can believe Margaret doesn’t have religion, and that she isn’t going to the Y or the Jewish Community Center. What they don’t know is Margaret has her own very special relationship with God. She can talk to God about everything—family, friends, even Moose Freed, her secret crush.

Margaret is funny and real, and her thoughts and feelings are oh-so-relatable—you’ll feel like she’s talking right to you, sharing her secrets with a friend.

Judy Blume spent her childhood in Elizabeth, NJ, making up stories inside her head. She has spent her adult years in many places, doing the same thing, only now she writes her stories down on paper. Adults as well as children will recognize such Blume titles as: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret; Superfudge; Blubber; Just As Long As We're Together; and Forever. She has also written the best-selling novels Wifey; Smart Women; and, Summer Sisters. More than 75 million copies of her books have been sold, and her work has been translated into twenty-six languages.

She receives thousands of letters each month from readers of all ages who share their feelings and

concerns with her.

Judy received a B.S. in education from New York University in 1961, which named her a Distinguished Alumna in 1996, the same year that American Library Association honored her with the Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifetime Achievement. She has won more than ninety awards, none more important than those coming directly from her youngest readers.

She serves on the boards of the Author's Guild, currently as Vice President; the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, where she sponsors an award for contemporary fiction; and the National Coalition Against Censorship, working to protect intellectual freedom. In Spring 2002, Judy was a spokesperson for the Cheerios "A Book for Every Child" literacy campaign which benefited Reading is Fundamental, America's largest literacy organization. She is also the founder and trustee of The Kids Fund, a charitable and educational foundation.

Judy's first book in the Fudge series, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, was published in 1972. She is thrilled to be celebrating its 30th Anniversary with the publication of Double Fudge. Just as generations of fans have loved the Fudge books, generations of Judy's family have inspired them. Thirty years ago, Fudge was inspired by her son, Larry, and now Double Fudge was written at the request of her grandson, Elliot.

Judy lives on islands up and down the East Coast with her husband George Cooper. They have three grown children and one grandchild.

I've been reading since early grade school. I'm now in my late 80's. A variety of interesting challenging books and authors through the years. Have to tell you it's the first time I picked up this book. Knew about it. Easy read, to the point, glad I did, and great for a teen.
Great job Judy Blume.

I read this book the first time in the early eighties. I was in my forties. Why would a forty-something year old lady read..."Are You There God? It's Me Margaret"...The answer being...I taught the performing arts to young ladies and some young gentlemen. I had a favorite student that had been with me for years, that brought the book in to me, as a gift. Why? Because...my name is Margaret!! The student was about 10 and she was so proud she had found a book that she did so enjoy reading, with my name as the main character. I thought...how sweet!! Did I read it? Of course...out of courtesy!! Did I like it? Absolutely...Very Much!! I associated with the novel. I am most sure many younger and older ladies have associated with this novel throughout the years. My parents moved when I was in the 5th grade. But...they moved back to where I had lived before. I thought my world would be wonderful again...just like before. But...like Margaret...surroundings and individuals change so quickly when one is so young, it is most difficult to understand all. In my case...it was if I had never been there. Old friendships had to be re-kindled. New friendships had to be made. Without God to talk with daily...what would I had done? He was my best friend. Just like Margaret I had a loving grandmother, that my brother and I spent each summer with. We had many conversations on the do's and don't of life. It was most difficult to understand what was expected of me and what I expected of others. Just like Margaret...I do not know how I would have managed without my conversations with God. Judy Blume, had to have associated her own young life, when writing this masterful novel. I never thought about the religious aspect of the book...as it was presented in such a well-received manner. I read this book to my son...(I never had a daughter)...when he was about 10 years of age. You know...when every young person...girl or boy, does start to ask all those necessary questions of life. This adorable little book answered many of those questions. He loved the book. Why have I read it again today...at this late time in my life? Well...here is the answer. I have finally...after many years....written my first book for the young reader. Judy Blume has presented all her books in such an outstanding way....I wanted to try to achieve some of the masterfulness she does display, when reaching her intended audience. Yes...Are You There God? It's Me Margaret...Will always hold a little part of my heart...as the young lady that gave it to me many years past...is still a dearing friend today. I went on to teach her daugther ballet, tap, and baton...just as I had her Mom. When Nikki (the young daughters name) was 10 years old, I gave her the copy that her Mom had given me many years ago. Recently...I ordered a new copy from Amazon...so I could re-fresh my mind with the beauty of Margaret's sweet escapades in..."Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. This is a classic. I recommend it for the young reader...both girl and boy. Peggy Inez, Author [[ ISBN 978-159858-400-4

A Timeless Classic! This story has endured, and will continue to do so for years to come! I read this when I was younger, my wife read this when she was younger, and we both agree that one day our child will read it! Even for boys, there's value in reading this story and having a glimpse into how other people experience life. Pick this up for your kids!

Margaret is trying to figure out where she fits in the world. Her parents decided to move to New Jersey, so she had to give up her bedroom in their Manhattan apartment and the school her grandmother had paid for. She has a new bedroom and a new school, a public school, and she doesn’t know if she’ll fit in. But then Nancy shows up at her new front door and invites Margaret to run under the sprinklers with her. And just like that, Margaret has a new friend.

On the first day of school, Margaret meets her new teacher—a first-year teacher named Mr. Benedict, and she gets into Nancy’s secret friend group with Janie and Gretchen. They talk boys, bras, school, and getting their periods.

At home, Margaret gets along okay with her parents. And she adores her grandmother. She used to spend more time with her grandmother, when they lived in the city, but her grandmother finds ways to visit and to get Margaret back to the city. But when Margaret is alone and feeling sad or confused or hopeful, there is only one person she turns to. She prays.

Margaret doesn’t go to church or synagogue. Her father is Jewish and her mother is Christian, and they didn’t want to pressure her to follow either religion. They thought it would be best for her to choose when she gets older. When Mr. Benedict says he wants everyone in the class to pick a topic to study all year long, she chooses religion. She tries going to temple with her grandmother and tries a couple of churches with her friends. She reads books about religion, and she hopes to find answers that feel real to her.

But as the school year goes on and she faces pressure from her friends and challenges at school, she starts to feel like she’s getting left behind. She’s one of the last of her friends to develop, and she feels like her prayers are going nowhere. Will she figure out who she wants to be before she finishes sixth grade, or will she get left behind?

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is a classic novel of growing angst for girls. I read it when I was a kid. All my friends read it. Everyone read it. It’s still a classic today, thanks to the timeless voice of author Judy Blume. Margaret is the perfect reflection of every girl’s fears as she grows up and starts to compare herself with the other girls in her class.

I loved this book as a kid, and every so often I pull it back out to read again. It never gets old, never gets stale. It is a little dated, like a snapshot of New York City in the 1960s, but Margaret’s feelings, her insecurities, her struggles are the same for all girls everywhere. Every girl should read this book, several times, and share it with all their friends, daughters, nieces, and granddaughters.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 18, 2023
I ordered this as an adult, knowing it was for younger readers but I'd seen it had been made into a film. It was a cracking story and well written in the first person, almost like a journal. I think teens would love it as it deals humorously with issues that teenagers worry about. I gave it to a friends daughter who apparently doesn't read much and she really liked it.
