There are more anime movies coming out now than ever before, and there are plenty of promising ones!
I’ve made a list of some of the most interesting movies hitting Japanese theaters throughout 2022 and 2023. The list has been ordered by release date, from nearest to furthest out, for your convenience!
All release dates are for Japanese theaters. Don’t miss out on these when you get a chance to see them yourself!

The very first movie of Black Clover , one of the greatest anime ever, has been announced.
As a superfan of Black Clover , this is the movie that I’m most excited about it. ALL HAIL BLACK CLOVER ♥️
Ayataka Tanemura , who worked on Black Clover , and other popular anime like Naruto Shippuden , and Devilman Crybaby has been penned to be the director for this movie!
Note: The movie is an original story about the Wizard King, supervised by original Black Clover author Yūki Tabata!

Avex Pictures announced that Zombie Land Saga
Note: After watching the promo titled “A Zombie-less Fight: Saga Revenge Edition.” you might think that the film will be live-action , but that won’t be the case. It will be an anime movie.

“My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!” movie has been announced.

Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning
Toei Animation revealed that they’re working on a new movie based on Davis Motomiya from Digimon 02.
It was revealed at DigiFes 2022 that Yumeta Company would helm the movie after Last Evolution – Kizuna. The movie is also set in February 2012. not long after the events of Kizuna with the now 20-year-old Digidestined of season 2.

Overlord the Movie: The Holy Kingdom
A new isekai movie is coming up!
During the announcement of season 4 of Overlord , it was also announced that a new movie is in the works.
No other information on the movie has been announced yet. Check out Overlord Season 4 airing as of Summer 2022!

Kaguya-sama: Love is War: The First Kiss Never Ends
Kaguya-sama:Love is War Season 3 (Ultra-Romantic ) ended in Spring 2022. A movie to continue the series has just been announced! It made the cover of NewType Magazine!
It is supposed to continue the story after Season 3! I’m so excited for this movie! This may also end the series.
“Kaguya-sama: Love is War -The First Kiss Never Ends- ” will screen theatrically in Japan this winter. As previously announced, it will screen theatrically prior to broadcasting on TV; further details TBA.

Release Date: Winter 2022 in Japanese Theaters
“PSYCHO-PASS: PROVIDENCE” movie announced.
The film is a direct sequel to the film Psycho-Pass 3 First Inspector.
One should be able to watch the film on Amazon Prime given that Amazon Prime has taken the distribution rights of the last film and season. Although there is a possibility for it to be amazon exclusive, there’s a chance Crunchyroll will premiere it worldwide on their platform.
This is also part of the 10-year anniversary of the Psycho-Pass anime.

A new Madoka Magica anime film was revealed during the online 10th-anniversary event.
As a sequel to the 2013 anime film, the new film is set to continue the story.

Sequel movie to Yuri!!! on Ice has been announced. Unfortunately, the exact date has been revealed yet.

The first Ghibli movie since
The Tale of Princess Kaguya in 2013, Studio Ghibli’s new movie will center around the 1937 book of the same name,
Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka or
How Do You Live? by Genzaburo Yoshino.
It won’t be an adaptation of this book, but will instead be a story of how this book has affected the protagonist’s life.
Coming back out of retirement, Hayao Miyazaki helmed Ghibli’s new project starting in 2016. Up until recently, the movie was slated for release in 2020.
In a December 2019 interview, it was announced the studio was animating a minute of footage per month, the original deadline was scrapped, and that at the current rate, the movie would be released in 2037.

It really depends on the movie.
Usually, if the movie is a success in Japan, the company producing the movie will announce whether it will be screened overseas. Usually, a couple of months after it’s released in Japan.
In the past year, Sword Art Online the Movie: Progressive – Aria of a Starless Night, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission , the blockbuster Demon Slayer -Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train,
Japanese theaters usually do not screen anime movies with English subtitles.
But there are some special film events where some anime or live-action movies have subtitles. For example, the Tokyo International Film Festival where Tenki No Ko (Weathering With you)

It depends on the movie.
But, typically between 6 to 9 months after the release date in Japan, the movie will be available on your favorite streaming platforms.
