Baked Potatoes On The Grill is an easy way to make the perfect side dish. You can prepare them while your main course is cooking on the grill! The traditional baked potato is usually served alongside a grilled steak or beautiful slice of prime rib.

I always think of the classic baked potato as a staple in the traditional steak houses. You know the ones, with red velvet wallpaper, dimly lit with an old waiter in a suit who has worked there for years!

They bring out your baked potato with your meal and then come around with a carrier and ask you what you would like on your baked potato. They have sour cream, chives, grated cheese, bacon bits, and butter and they just pile on whatever you ask for. Ahh, but maybe I’m dating myself LOL!

How do you bake potatoes on the grill in foil?

Cooking a baked potato on the grill is the best, and this recipe is super simple. In order to reduce the cooking time, I usually microwave my potatoes for 4-5 minutes. You can do this either before or after you cover them with oil and salt. This also gives you a fluffy potato on the inside which is ultimately what you want. 

While you preheat your grill to medium-hot, about 350 degrees F, rinse your potatoes to remove any dirt and rub your potato with olive oil and Kosher salt.

Do you poke holes in baked potatoes on the grill?

The short answer to this question is yes. This allows the moisture in the potato to escape while it is cooking. If you don’t poke a few holes in each potato you will have a bit of a mess on your hands. Plus your baked potatoes are not going to look like you want them to!

Leave your potatoes to rest for 10 to 15 minutes after they come out of the microwave. They will be too hot to handle. Then give them a good coating with olive oil and Kosher salt if you didn’t do this before you microwave them. Wrap each potato in foil and you are ready for the grill.

Should I wrap my potatoes in foil?

I definitely wrap my potatoes in foil when grilling baked potatoes. This way it holds in the moisture. It also keeps the oil and salt on the potatoes while they are cooking. Once you microwave the potatoes it doesn’t take long for them to cook, maybe 20-30 minutes. It is recommended that you cook your baked potatoes to an internal temperature of 210 degrees F.

You can use an instant-read thermometer to make sure that your potatoes have reached the right temperature. Or you can use a fork to test and make sure that the potatoes are soft in the middle. That’s a bit old-fashioned but it certainly does work in a pinch. 

Once your potatoes are done you should remove them from the grill. Keeping them wrapped in the foil will allow them to stay warm for much longer. Baked potatoes will hold in a warming drawer for a fairly long time too. You can make them a little ahead of time and pull them out for dinner when everything else is ready to serve.

Serving Them Up!

Whether you are serving a plated dinner or having a buffet, these foil-wrapped baked potatoes are the perfect side. Once you unwrap the potatoes from the foil you are going to want to cut a slit down the middle of the potato. Then take your thumb and index finger and place them at each end. Then push gently together toward the center of the potato. This will open it up so that it is ready for the toppings!

I would recommend that you have a number of toppings available for your guests to help themselves. Some of the traditional toppings include butter, sour cream, bacon bits (use the real ones, not the artificial ones!), chives, and/or green onions.

You can get creative and include things like crumbled blue cheese, hot sauce, or even broccoli with cheese sauce! Make your grilled baked potato your own; I know you will love them!
