PRS Quality in a Baritone

The Paul Reed Smith SE 277 Baritone is a powerful sonic tool for guitarists who love down-tuned riffing and for players who need a vast array of new low-end colors for recording and performing. The two SE 85/15 S humbucking pickups on the 277 Baritone can be split to offer you both humbucking and single-coil tones. And the birds in flight inlays, the beveled flame maple top, and the identifiable body shape exude unmistakable PRS quality. This SE 277 Baritone is sure to add new low-strung colors to your playing.

27.7"-scale baritone

Baritone electric guitars have been in use with popular music for decades. Both '60s surf rock sounds and spaghetti western soundtracks were full of these down-tuned instruments. Not only did they offer their own muscular twang, but baritones were often used underneath the bass part — known as tic-tac bass — for more definition. Today the baritone tradition is going strong with the aggressive lows of heavy metal. Extended-scale instruments like the SE 277 Baritone offer sonic adventurers a way to find new chord voicings.

PRS-designed 85/15 S humbucking pickups

The two humbucking pickups in this SE 277 Baritone are Paul Reed Smith-designed 85/15 S's. An update on PRS's original humbuckers, the 85/15 S is designed to sound terrific whether used in humbucking or single-coil mode. They offer you plenty of output for driving your amp hard, while sounding clear and detailed when you want. These SE humbuckers closely resemble the tones of the US-made versions found in the solidbody electric guitars crafted at PRS's Maryland factory.

Unmistakable PRS appointments

The SE 277 Baritone is loaded with appointments that immediately identify the guitar as a Paul Reed Smith. The beveled flame maple veneer top maintains a classy look and feel to the instrument. A PRS-designed plate-style hardtail bridge delivers solid tuning stability in a low-profile design that feels comfortable to your picking hand. And the birds in flight fretboard inlay speaks volumes about the quality of craftsmanship and tone you can expect from this PRS. Guitarists at Sweetwater are definitely adding this baritone to their collections.

Well Worth The Wait

I have been in the market for a baritone for several years. I am also an avid PRS fan and player, owning 2 Core Custom 24's. I did not get the chance to scoop up one of the old Mushok baritones before they were discontinued and got very excited when they announced the SE 277 last year, of course only in red. My reservations at that point was I didn't want another red PRS haha. I am glad I waited for the release of Charcoal Burst. I have been waiting for this guitar to come in stock for months. Checking the site multiple times per day for 3 months. Finally I caught a listing for a demo model that Sweetwater had. I ordered it immediately and haven't looked back since. This is my first SE and I had reservations coming off of Core models. Let me tell you, this guitar is not just worth every penny, but it plays like it is a guitar in the range of $1,000-$1,500.

I upgraded the tuning pegs to SE Locking Tuners which gave it even more stability! (I did drill out the low E peg slightly to accomodate up to a .74 gauge string)

The video below is a track in Drop A, which the guitar has NO ISSUES with. I also play down to Drop G# with no issues.

Over all this is an excellent purchase if you are in the baritone market!

Where have you been all my life??

First off this guitar simply looks incredible! Second the tones you can get out of this are great for what ever style you're into. Me personally I play brutal death metal so I was looking for something in a 6 string that comes tuned low and is made to handle high gain shredding. I was a little worried on the 27.7 scale length. But this guitar plays incredibly well and is super easy to get used to. After unboxing it I tuned it up and played for two hours non stop and never had to tune it at all. Even getting back out later and jamming again it was still in perfect tune. Running thru a Peavey 6505 on a Marshall cab this thing just roars like a beast. Came set up perfectly as well which as we all know is rare sometimes. Sweetwater guys really make sure you're getting a top notch instrument. So for all you metal guys looking for something in a 6 string that comes ready to shred in the tuning of a 7 string , don't hesitate to grab one of these. This PRS baritone is by far my favorite out of all my guitars now. All the years of fighting with a regular 6 string for low tuning are over. Thanks you PRS!! GO BUY ONE!!!!

High Quality Guitar and Service

Didn't know much about baritone guitars prior, but I'm very happy to now play one. In addition to this guitar looking incredible, it sounds incredible as well! Patrick at Sweetwater was very helpful answering the questions I had and also providing updates on when it would and did ship. Its the first PRS I've purchased. Im extremely pleased with how this guitar sounds, it is very comfortable play, stays in tune, and the details in the design are flawless!

Easily the best anywhere near this price

It has that "feel" that makes you want to keep playing.
You may have to wait a few months, as I did. But it's worth it.
I asked for photos of my guitar before I approved the sale, as I did not like the jagged and odd look of the guitar pictured above ^ . Sweetwater easily obliged with wonderful photos of my guitar when it arrived after 3-4 months. Good things take time. Honestly, they should use my photos as the glamour shot ;)

A LOT of guitar for the money!

Wanted to give Baritone guitars a try but didn't want a huge investment so after researching the 277 I took a chance on an import guitar. I must say that PRS have their SE line processes tweaked to perfection and makes me question their ability to offer this guitar at this price and still be profitable! The finish is literally flawless and the hardware is solid. No tuning issues whatsoever. The pickups are balanced and the electronics smooth, just not what I'm looking for but that's something I expected. For those looking to enter the Baritone realm, you cannot go wrong with the PRS 277 as the design allows those looking to plunge the depths of A and even G an instrument that commands its place in a mix. I gotta add hats off to my my advisor Ryan over at Sweetwater who made the selection and purchase process effortless and followed up on every step from selection to satisfaction. Five star service!
