Although the pricing model for Age of Empires Online, like the game itself, is in "testing" and undecided, many publications like Joystiq have been reporting from Gamescom that the game is likely to implement the "premium" model - where much of the game is free and players buy more gameplay expansions (civilizations, areas to quest in, etc). If this holds up until release, it will certainly help push the game's popularity and even the most doubtful Age fan would give it a try.
From the Joystiq article:
Quoted from Joystiq:
Robot Entertainment Designer Jerome K. Jones, who is working on the game chimed in, "So it would be like paying for an expansion pack. ... You won't buy one thing at a time. You might buy an entire civ or another region with a bunch of quests in it."

eh not a big fan of the idea. 'free to play' basically means 'continuous costs to enjoy'.
More of a fan of the good ol' pay-once-to-play-forever that is the case with every other game I've ever played.
edit: and 'myll'_erik, wow that's an old name.

Yep, that means you're gonna to buy it by pieces as long as the popularity of the game is high and it still gives benefits. Probably your investment in the game will be much that if you buy it at first.
I already can imagine in 1v1 the player who payed for the most upgrades wins xD.
Then it would be the only realistic part in the game.

On the article I link to they specifically address that. They say you'll buy more content but not better upgrades to give you advantages.

Let me guess it is either using payball or credit card (cause everyone in the US have one)... I have neither of both so I cant buy anything. They won't see a lousy dollar from me xD
I very much doubt I'll play this, even if they paid me.
Shame on you, Robot.

Does it mean that we can buy improved graphics ? Now everything begins to make sense...

You will buy more content, which unlocks new quests, and new quests give you new items. So basically, in the end, you need to play in order to be competitive.

Since its using Live, im guessing the credits will be in the form of microsoft points, which anyone can buy from a retailer with cash.
