They claim it wasn’t overdubbed. They were on tour when it was being mixed. I don’t know if this is actually true though.

Are there any sources to back the overdub claim? It’s not the first time I’ve seen it discussed by fans, but the band have said otherwise.

“The tapes were mixed by long-time producer Martin Birch while the band was still actually out on the road in America. "He would send us tapes of it one track at a time and we would listen to it and send it back to him with 'yeah' or 'no' written on the box," Steve recalls. "So there were no overdubs done, nothing added in the studio afterwards to make it sound better like you get with so many so-called 'live' albums these days. It was exactly as we did it on stage, warts and all, which is why it sounds so exciting, I think. It was the real McCoy."”

“Band leader Steve Harris has stated that even if they had had the time, they wouldn’t have added any studio overdubs, stating “we were really anti all that, anyway. We were very much, like, ‘This has got to be totally live,’ you know?””

I found fans online apparently quoting Bruce from around the time of the Rock in Rio live record, saying one of Adrian’s guitar tracks was redone for LAD and perhaps vocals on one song, though I couldn’t find a link to an article or recording of an interview.

Would be good to find some proper sources, for my own curiosity!

You can do comparison between LAD and bootlegs of the shows recorded. The most obvious is on one song Adrians guitar is out of tune in one song and it is completely overdubbed in the studio. Of course I am not saying LAD is completely overdubbed (I would say it is lot less overdubbed than other live albums of the era), but more overdubbed compared to later Maiden live albums. Rock In Rio also has annoying overdubs on the choruses where Bruce lets the audience sing, but on record other part of chorus is copy pasted over audience

I don't know, I think the ones from the 2000's sound great too.

Live After Death is my first and favorite IM anything

One of their best.

When that album came out, they stated it was purely live, the band prided themeslves on that. But the live recordings are mixed and engineered, mainly by a producer who brought out the best in Maiden, Martin Birch.

However Live After Death is recorded in mutli nights at Long Beach, and they used the better tracks from whatever show of the consecutive nights.

The LP version when it came out (which I bought back then) side B of the 2nd record is Hammersmith Odeon- not long beach arena. That side "4" was omitted from cassette tapes, amd earlier CD versions due to time.

Later on (post Live After Death around 7th Son era) Steve purchased a mobile recording unit from the Rolling Stones, and changed how they recorded live shows- pre digital recording. Later yet the band, pretty much records all live shows digitally for later use.

Live after death is not a completely pure live album. Some Guitar parts and sone vocals have been overdubbed in the studio. Also it is not a one show but a collection. Although there are overdubs in other live albums also, but probably not so much as in Live After Death

But to keep in mind that there were no pure live albums in 70s and 80s. Most of the legendary live albums are enhanced in the studio. Kiss Alive! And Judas Priest Unleashed In The East for example

No live LP is purely live. Unleashed in the Studio features vocals that were replaced in their entirety (if I remember correctly).

Martin Birch was a genius.

The additional member from Dickinson's first solo LP doesn't help.

Different producer... Martin Birch. Also the lack of a guitar player who fucks up solos and goes off the tracks.
