About Anne Rice:
Anne Rice was an American author of Gothic and Christian fiction. She was most well known for her series of novels about vampires entitled “The Vampire Chronicles” which feature famous character Lestat. Her books have sold over 100 million copies world wide. Anne Rice was born Howard Allen Frances O’Brien on October 4, 1941.
Anne sadly passed on December 11th, 2021.
She spent much of her early life growing up in New Orleans before moving to Texas and later San Francisco. She married painter and poet Stan Rice in 1961 and had two children with him. Anne Rice was born the second of four daughters to her Irish Catholic parents, mother Katherine Allen O’Brien and father Howard O’Brien.
Her father was a veteran of World War II and had a book published posthumously, The Impulsive Imp. Anne grew up in New Orleans, where she dealt with the adversity of being poor as well as the alcoholism of her mother. They lived with her maternal grandmother for some time and remained in the house for a few years after she passed away.
Anne’s birth name was Howard, but while attending the Catholic school St. Alphonsus she changed her name to Anne because she thought it was pretty when asked by a nun. Her mother passed away in 1956 from complications from alcoholism and Anne and her three sisters were sent to St. Joseph’s by her father in an action Rice considered a betrayal due to it being a “medieval, awful” place.
Dorothy’s father remarried again in 1957 to Dorothy Van Bever. They moved the next year to north Texas where Rice would first meet her future husband in a high school journalism they were both enrolled in at Richardson High School.
She graduated in 1959 and attended Texas Woman’s University in Denton but transferred to North State Texas College and ended up dropping out of her sophomore year due to issues with money and finding employment. Rice decided to move to San Francisco with a friend and found work as an insurance claims processor.
Shortly after moving to the Haight-Ashbury district, Rice began taking night classes at the University of San Francisco and began seeing Stan Rice. Shortly after, he sent her a letter asking Rice to marry him. They were married on October 14, 1961.
Rice graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from San Francisco State University in 1964 and had her daughter Michele on September 21, 1966. She graduated with an M.A. from San Francisco State University in 1972. Michele was diagnosed with acute granulocytic leukemia in 1970 and passed away from the disease at Stanford Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto on August 5, 1972.
Rice was still grieving for her daughter when she wrote Interview With A Vampire in 1973. She partly based the character off of a novel, Dracula’s Daughter. Rice sold Interview to Albert A. Knopf for a $12,000 advance in 1974 with the help of her new literary agent Phyllis Seidel.
She gave birth to her son Christopher in 1978. Rice gave up drinking in 1979 with her husband, realizing they didn’t want their son to have the same experiences growing up. Rice went on to write two historical novels titled The Feast Of All Saints and Cry To Heaven.
She wrote five more erotic novels under two different pen names named The Claiming Of Sleeping Beauty, Sleeping Beauty’s Punishment, Beauty’s Release, Exit To Eden and Belinda.
Books By Anne Rice
Rice ended up writing ten novels in The Vampire Chronicles. The Vampire Lestat was published in 1985, followed by The Queen Of The Damned and The Tale Of The Body Thief. In the New Tales Of The Vampires series, Rice wrote Pandora and a follow up, Vittorio The Vampire.
She also penned the Lives Of The Mayfair Witches series, which included The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Tattoos. Rice went on to write her Christ The Lord trilogy and followed that up with the Songs Of The Seraphim Series. She also wrote the Wolf Gift chronicles and several other novels, including The Mummy in 1989 and Violin in 1997.
Interview With A Vampire
Interview With A Vampire was published in 1976 and focuses on main character Louis. Louis is telling his story to a reporter about his 200 years of life as a vampire and his weariness of suffering and his experiences.
He is a plantation owner in the eighteenth century who loses his wife and child in labor. Tired of life, he agrees when offered the chance to become a vampire by mysterious Lestat. Louis feeds off only animals in the beginning and is repelled by Lestat’s violent feeding on humans.
Lestat later creates a human child to be a sort of daughter for them. Gradually, Louis detaches from Lestat, and the plot picks up and the hunt is on.
The Vampire Lestat
The Vampire Lestat was published in 1985 and follows the life of Lestat from his humble start in poverty to a vain vampire that he has become. Lestat escapes to Paris with friend Nicki where he is later bitten and abandoned by older vampire Marius.
He later bites his mother to save her from dying and leaves Nicki in order to save him coming into any harm. But later, when he meets fellow vampire Armand, Lestat turns his friend. Nicki does not take to being a vampire well and eventually commits suicide. Lestat’s story is picked up again in Queen Of The Damned.
Books Made Into A Movie
Anne Rice’s early book “Interview With A Vampire” was made into a movie in 1994. Interview starred Brad Pitt as Louis de Pointe du Loc, Antonio Banderas as Tom Cruise as the vampire Lestat. Kirsten Dunst also starred as the memorable child vampire Claudia.
Another novel in The Vampire Chronicles was also made into a movie. Vampire Of The Damned hit theaters in 2002 starring singer Aaliyah as the Akasha, the queen of all vampires. Lestat (Stuart Townshend) has awakened from his sleep and become a rock star, and his music wakes up the queen of all vampires, who wants him to become her king. The film was directed by Michael Rymer.
Books Made For Television
Anne Rice wrote the story for a television pilot that was focused on horror and crime called Rag And Bone. James D. Parriott wrote the teleplay for the television series. The pilot aired on the CBS network in 2002 starring Dean Cain as Detective Henry Moran and Robert Patrick as Sergeant Daniel Ryan.
In addition, Rice’s short story “The Feast Of All Saints” was made into a miniseries for television in 2001 for Showtime. The series was directed by Peter Medak and starred James Earl Jones and Gloria Reuben.

Ms. Rice became one of my most important author in my adult life….I have all of her books and have read them over and over….RIP Ms.Rice…you will be loved and honored forever….
I loved Anne Rice’s books and was sad to hear she had passed away. Did she write the third and last book in the Life of Christ series?
Does “Young Messiah” by Anne Rice belong in the Life of Christ series?
That one is just an alternate title for Out of Egypt, the first in the series.
.
Thank you so much for saying it first. I was pleased to see such a thorough list of books, then began doubting the accuracy of the list as I read the biography. So poorly written. I couldn’t even finish reading it.
