Four Directions - 15 Photos & 19 Reviews - Jewelry - 211 S Main St, Downtown Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor, MI - Phone Number - Yelp
It's a really cool place for buy inexpensive stone, rock, .and gem pre-made jewelry. This store has an abundance of charm, color, and variety for both the aspiring and establish jewelry artist to manifest dazzling adornments and accessories as finishing touches to any outfit. I'm in love with my white agate sliced earrings that I found while looking around. They were a treasure and a steal I could not pass on for $12 a pair!!!
I wonder, if I can shop online and if they ship in and out of State? I will follow up and post what I learned as a tip.
I went in yesterday to look for a piece for my wife's birthday. I kinda knew what I wanted but had to leave. The clerk behind the counter had his mask down and was eating food. Kinda don't want to go back. I wear a mask while around people, this guy couldn't wait for me to leave to begin eating?
This store has always been a must visit place for me during my trips to AnnArbor and I've had a lot of 5-star experiences there, but this latest one-star visit will probably be my last. I've amalgamated them all into a three-star overall. I've tried on jewelry there every time I visited and don't recall any experience being like this last trip. I was interested in trying on some of their Fordite rings as I've been in the market for one for quite some time and they had a nice variety to choose from. I gestured to the half-dozen ones that I was interested in, presuming the employee would pull them out and I could try them all on, which is what would happen at most similar stores (and frankly, several of the store as I shop at you can just access the jewelry at all times without a staff member and frankly, several of the stores I shop at you can just access the jewelry at all times without a staff member grabbing each one for you). She was very insistent that I could only see one at a time. Once I had tried them all on, I went to grab one I previously tried on, she batted at my hand and screamed at me that I was not allowed to grab it. I've spent hundreds here in the past and surely would not have done so had I been so suspiciously treated by the staff. That said, you're going to be hard-pressed to find a nicer selection of gemstones. I'll be saving my money for my fave jewelry shop in Kalamazoo (Amy Zane) and my visits to Chicago's Local Flavor where staff members don't treat customers like criminals. I had also brought a pair of earrings up to the cash register when we found them before I tried on the rings, and said I had some more shopping to do but I wanted to buy these for my friend real quick (I'd wanted it to be a surprise). The cashier encouraged me to finish my shopping, and told me she would hold them for me. She wound up being the clerk who was glowering over me while I tried on the rings, and apparently she didn't pass the message to her co-worker that I was planning to purchase them as a gift for my friend with whom I was shopping, so her co-worker sold them to my friend. D'oh.
I love the merchandise in this shop, but the prices are steep and the staff has pulled the Pretty Woman stunt on me three times now so I don't even bother going in anymore.
The first time it happened, I noticed a sale sign out front. When I asked the clerk about the sale, they directed me to one case and volunteered that "those are expensive." They then stood a safe distance from me and silently watched me until I left. The second time this happened and I left empty-handed I kind of chuckled, realizing that they had no idea I was a small nudge away from making an ill-advised impulse buy.
The third time I came in I mentioned that I was looking for a wedding ring, and was open to more interesting options beyond the traditional wedding band. Again, the clerk cautioned me that the rings were expensive, couldn't show me any suggestions, and essentially discouraged me from browsing. I left and later purchased a ring elsewhere.
Not sure why you find such unwelcoming energy here. Maybe it's their upstairs neighbor.
The entire staff was incredibly friendly! We came in just to browse and started up a great conversation. Even though we didn't buy anything I recommend coming out to check out their vast selection as well as interact with the staff.
Well being a part of the downtown AnnArbor atmosphere really makes this place stand out! It carries a menagarie of items from all over the world and their prices are not too bad either! We were spending a leisurely Sunday afternoon in town and just happened to drop in and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They were eager to help us and there were many different items to choose from. They had alot of jewelry and amber with quirky items that you won't find other places. They had alot of neat little items that you won't find in other places. Such as the hair clips and polished rocks, gems, stones, and many other interesting items. The prices are a bit high...OK more than a bit high, but it's still fun to drop in and look around. It gives you the "flavor" of the college town of AnnArbor, Michigan! It's a great spot to be for anyone in the area; living here or otherwise...
This place was crazy cool. Lots of fossils gems jewelry and unique items to buy for somebody. Poop dinosaur poop that is! Lol seriously. If you know somebody is and collecting fossils or rough Gems this is the place to go!
I love this store. The employees are super friendly and they have a great selection of slightly unusual items. Their prices are much more reasonable than other stores of its kind. I always stop in when visiting AnnArbor, and usually end up buying something beautiful (earrings).
I love the items from this store and really glad I dont live in the area as I would be broke. Very beautiful gems & jewelry but generally high in price - although I dont think you would find the quality of their items somewhere else for a lower price. The reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 is that the staff was not very friendly when we were there. They helped us when we asked them but I felt that they didnt want to & would have rather been doing something else.
Personally, this is the only place that sells decent Sandalwood and Rose soap. Their jewelry and home items are pretty interesting, too. If you have an hour to kill, or are trying to show friends and family a bit of downtown, this is the perfect place to go, for people of all ages and various interest. Most of the staff are volunteers, and are super friendly and helpful to answer your questions as best as possible.
One of the best things about the spot is that the majority, if not all, of the items are free-trade. As other Yelpers have pointed out, you absolutely can find similar items online at other vendors for half-price. But in my opinion, too many AnnArbor businesses are being replaced with corporate giants. So instead of *still* lamenting about the loss of Shaman Drum, log off Ebay and walk that Starbucks Venti right in.
They're moving soon, so be on the lookout for their new location closer to the heart of downtown than the less-noticeable edge.
If you want pearls, amber, moldavite, amethyst, geodes, book ends, and anything made out of natural gems, there is a full selection here.
Sure, you can find similar stuff on eBay at cheaper prices, and I have, but this is a nice local place that has a vast selection with some pretty pieces.
Granted, I would inspect each item closely, as I had found that a paire of mabe pearl and amethyst earrings that looked nice through the case, had obvious glue on the back that turned me off to buying. Granted, each piece of jewelry comes from somewhere else and are crafted by different people, etc. so one item that isn't great does not mean they all are no good.
I've gotten some nice things from there, but each piece needs careful inspection for quality for what you're paying for it. Some items are just too downright pricey for me, since I am a bargain shopper and can buy similar things on ShopNBC, eBay and HSN for less with similar craftsmanship.
HIGHLIGHTS I'd say the highlights of their selection are:
everyday casual pearls- all styles & colors marcasite (when they have it in-stock) hammered silver and silver pieces amber- all colors/styles and price points
They also have some loose stones of interest to collectors and whatnot. If you're in the market for natural gems in rough, raw and hand-crafted jewelry forms, this is the local place to see. Check it out for yourself, it is worth a browse.
Came in here on a whim today, very cool gallery. All of their stuff is based around gems or stones which I thought was really cool. Selection ranges from some very nice gem bracelets ($5-20) and rings to full quartz rocks. They also have some cool fossil related items for sale as well. Good spot to check out for anyone looking for something a bit more natural.
To any other guys reading this: obviously since this is a jewelry gallery, the selection is weighted a bit towards women but their selection for guys was pretty good, definitely worth a look.
I fell in love with this place when I discovered they sell hair clips from Korea.
For those of you who don't know why hair clips from Korea are so special, let me enlighten you, they are highly sought out in all of Asia, are well made, and are as sparkly as you can get without being trashy. I always get compliments when I wear them. The prices are great, same price for the clips as in Cambodia and much less than the going Japanese rate! Only problem they don't carry many of these clips. They also carry clips from France that are beautiful but out of my price range.
The jewelry is also cool, ranges from inexpensive to moderate. I got a pair of nice eight dollar earrings, can't beat that! The owner is really nice and helpful.
