The W South Beach Has A New Look Following A $30 Million Refresh

This article is more than 2 years old.

The W South Beach is all grown up.

Reigning as Miami’s high-octane resort and nightlife destination for over a decade, the W South Beach’s 400+ guest suites, spa and leisure spaces have undergone a dreamy refresh — a serene departure from its original look that first debuted in 2009. The new features, from its light and airy color palette to modern décor, evoke a sense of calmness that defines a new era for the Marriott property.

Like many business owners in hospitality, the COVID-19 pandemic and global halt of travel offered time to rethink strategy and infrastructure. For real estate mogul and part-owner Aby Rosen, this meant a $30 million overhaul of W South Beach, keeping the iconic elements that have given the oceanfront hotel its cultural relevance in Magic City, while introducing new aspects that appeal to modern tastes of discerning travelers.

The guest rooms were re-designed by Miami Beach-based company, Urban Robot Associates. Tasked with transitioning the moody, nocturnal W aesthetic, the design process married beach house-style millwork, natural oaks, airy and plush neutral textures. The beige color palette is splashed with accents of soft corals and emeralds, while the new room flow creates an idyllic transitional oasis where guests go from a sleep haven to a contemporary living room set for entertaining. The modern furnishings strike the perfect balance of luxury and comfort, and the powder rooms boast hand-painted artwork by local Miami artist, Juan Manuel Rozas. The suite redesign also includes new room types: the Queen Studio and “Fantastic” suites, featuring two oversized plush beds.

In addition to the revamped guest suites, the new spa concept takes center stage. Bliss, once married to the W Hotel properties, is out, and upgraded with the lavish and thoughtfully-designed Away Spa. The difference in experience is impressive, from detox elixirs and chlorophyll-infused water on arrival, to special touches like cell phone sleeping bags for brief liberation from busy life. Also reimagined by Urban Robot Associates, the new wellness sanctuary is 9,000 square feet with a new menu of spa treatments crafted by spa director, Kristen Laukaitis who considered every detail from the eucalyptus-infused limestone steam showers to the Chanel-inspired vanities and take-home dry brushes. The space houses seven treatment rooms, a couple’s suite, manicure nooks, and a lush, sun-drenched terrace with a farm-to-table lunch menu.

The hotel, known for its museum-quality modern art since its inception, refreshed its $100 million collection curated by Aby Rosen himself. This is likely one of the more iconic aspects of the W — and for those who have stayed either as a hotel guest, dining patron, or nightlife sojourner, the W lobby has always felt like a luxurious living room defined by its extraordinary collections. The impressive range of original Andy Warhol pieces, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dustin Yellin, and more, injects a pop of whimsy and personality upon entry that you can’t find anywhere else down Collins Avenue.

Complementing the revamped suites and spa is the dining roster that hotel guests know and love — Mr. Chow and RWSB, and the outdoor garden bar, Irma’s — along with plenty of options for outdoor activity. Sip cocktails poolside under one of the new Instagram-worthy wet deck cabanas, or swish and swing on the rooftop tennis and basketball courts.
