EARLY LIFE
- Andy Warhol was born on August 6, 1928, in the neighborhood of Oakland in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- Andy Warhol’s parents were Slovakian Immigrants.
- His father was Ondrej Warhola, a construction worker.
- His mother was Julia Warhola, an embroider.
- Warhol’s parents were devoted to their faith as Byzantine Catholics and attended mass regularly.
- Slovakian culture and heritage was maintained in their household while living in Pittsburgh’s Eastern European territory.
- Warhol was eight when he contracted a rare disease known as Chorea — also known as St. Vitus’s Dance — the disease was sometimes fatal.
- It affected Warhol’s nervous system and left him bedridden for months.
- While Warhol was sick in bed, his mother taught him his first drawing lessons, and drawing became Warhol’s favorite childhood pastime.
- His mother bought him a camera at the age of nine as he was a fan of films.
- He set up a makeshift darkroom in their basement and developed a film.
- Warhol attended Holmes Elementary school.
- Warhol took the free art classes offered at the Carnegie Institute, now known as the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
- Warhol suffered from another tragedy when his father passed away from a jaundiced liver in 1942 when he was only 14 years old.
- When Warhol could not attend his father’s funeral, he became so upset that he hid under his bed throughout the wake.
- Ondrej, Warhol’s father, had recognized his son’s artistic talents in his will, so he decided that his life savings would go toward Warhol’s college education.
- Warhol began at Schenley High School in the same year his father died.
- Upon graduating, in 1945, he enrolled at the Carnegie Institute for Technology, now known as Carnegie Mellon University, and studied pictorial design.
ARTISTIC LIFE
- Warhol graduated from college with his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1949.
- Warhol moved to New York to become a commercial artist.
- He removed the ‘a’ in his last name to become Warhol.
- In September, Warhol signed a contract with Glamour Magazine. Soon enough, he became one of the most successful commercial artists of the 1950s, winning several awards for his unique and whimsical style.
- His method used his own blotted line technique and rubber stamps to create his drawings.
WARHOL AND POP ART
- Warhol debuted the concept of Pop Art in 1961, as he devoted his painting to focusing on mass-produced commercial goods.
- Warhol described Pop Art in his own words as “Once you ‘got’ pop, you could never see a sign the same way again. And once you thought pop, you could never see America the same way again.”
- Warhol was also famous for painting portraits of celebrities and figures in vivid, immensely bright or showy colors.
- Warhol’s famous portraits subjects include Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Mick Jagger, and Mao Tse-tung.
POP ART
- Pop art is a trend or movement in art that came from the United Kingdom and the United States during the middle to the end of the 1950s.
- The movement tended to challenge the traditions of fine art as it included images from popular and mass culture, such as advertising, comic books, and everyday or mundane cultural objects.
- It is aimed to oppose popular, what is understood by many, to be elitist, what is understood by few.
- Andy Warhol’s work explores the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture.
- He used several materials or mediums, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture.
- Andy Warhol’s notable works were:
- Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962)
- It was produced between November 1961 and March of 1962.
- It consists of 32 canvases with paintings of a Campbell’s Soup can, varying according to the flavors the company was producing at that time.
- The paintings were produced using silkscreening.
- Marilyn Diptych (1962)
- The silkscreen paintings depict the celebrity Marilyn Monroe.
- Chelsea Girls (1966)
- An underground film directed by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey.
- It was Andy Warhol’s first film that succeeded commercially, after making avante-garde art films, or films that are made in an unusual, experimental film.
DEATH
- Andy Warhol suffered from a chronic disease in his gall bladder in his later life.
- The complications in his body resulted in a cardiac arrest, causing his death on 22 February 1987.
LEGACY
- Warhol’s personal life was quite mysterious and therefore, has been the subject of much debate.
- He is widely believed to have been a gay man as his art often featured homoerotic imagery and motifs.
- However, Warhol claimed that he remained a virgin for his entire life.
- His paintings of distorted brand images and celebrity faces could be read as a criticism of what Warhol viewed as a culture that is obsessed with money and celebrity.
- However, in his book, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, he wrote that “making money is art and working is art, and good business is the best art.”
