Andrew Lloyd Webber has been made a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by King Charles in a move the composer described as the “greatest honour” of his life.
The order is the "oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain" and those selected are chosen in "recognition for their public service".
The Order of the Garter was established by King Edward III in medieval times, who was inspired by tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table to set up his own order.
Lloyd Webber said: "I am humbled, grateful and, quite frankly, staggered to have been made a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by His Majesty King Charles III. This is the greatest honour of my life."
The appointment is a gift from the King and is not awarded with ministerial advice, as with other honours.
Lloyd Webber will be presented with the honour at a service at Windsor Castle this summer.
