It's great they had so much footage of him. That got the two stars. But his later work was absent. Huge mistake. The subtitles are also hard to read.
I studied Beuys in college and was looking forward to this documentary but was so let down by the lack of depth and breadth in covering his work as an artist.

"30 Jahre nach seinem Tod ist Beuys aktueller denn je.. Der Film erklärt Beuys nicht. Er zeigt ihn " ZDF Aspekte
Beuys. Der Mann mit dem Hut. dem Filz und der Fettecke. Auch 30 Jahre nach seinem Tod erscheint er uns als Visionär, der seiner Zeit voraus war. Geduldig versuchte er schon damals zu erklären, dass "Geld keine Ware sein darf". Er wusste das der Geldhandel die Demokratie unterwandern würde.
Doch Beuys boxt, parliert, und erklärt dem toten Hasen die Kunst. "Wollen sie eine Revolution ohne Lachen machen ?" fragt er- und lacht.
Sein erweiteter Kunstbegriff führte ihn in den Kern auch heute noch relevanter gesellschaftlicher Debatten. Der Film lief ja erst im Mai 2017 in ausgewählten Kinos.
"Es ist die soziale Kunst gemeint, wenn ich sage : Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler" und somit ist Beuys hier genauer oder präziser als
"Andy Warhol", der in diesem Film auch auftaucht, und voraussagte "jeder werde mal für eine kurze Zeitspanne berühmt sein".
Regisseur "Andres Veiel" und seine Editoren "Stephan Krumbiegel" und "Olaf Vogtländer" zeichnen in ihrer furiosen, klugen Collage unzähliger oftmals unerschlossenenr Bild-und Tondokumente das Bild eines einzigartigen Menschen und Künstlers, der in seiner rastlosen Kreativität Grenzen sprengte. "Beuys" ist kein klasisches Porträt, sonder eine intime Betrachtung des Menschen, seiner Kunst und seiner Ideenräume, mitreißend, provozierned und verblüffend gegenwärtig. Chronologie und Orte verschwinden.

Ein Vergleich mit dem Film von "Rüdiger Sünner" "Zeige deine Wunde" Kunst und Spiritualität bei "Joseph Beuys" von 2015 liegt auf der Hand und ist anderseits auch schwer möglich, da diese Film ganz anders an die Theamtik herangeht und somit ist es ggf. eine Bereicherung wenn man beide DVDs kennt oder besitzt, da es kaum Überschneidungen in Thematik und Bildmaterial gibt.
Der Film von "Sünner" ist eher ein von persönlicher Bedeutungen geprägtes Künstlerpoträt, das daher bestimmte Aspkete nur anreißen kann, da die Schwrpunkte anders gewählt sind auch wenn in beiden Filme fast die selben Freunde und Weggefährten interviewt werden. Dies ist eine erneuter Beweis für die Vieldeutigkeit des Werkes und der Person "Beuys" der man sich auf vielfältige Weise annähern kann oder bzw. eine Annäherung versuchen kann.

Beuys hat es uns schwer gemacht, den Unterschied zwischen Kunst und Scharlatanerie zu erkennen. Und er war erst der Beginn. Danach kamen noch viele. Und er wusste, was er tat. Frei nach dem Motto: „Sie können doch selber entscheiden, ob es Kunst ist.“
Diese Botschaft überbringt der Film. Ist das eine hilfreiche Botschaft? Oder nervt dieser Film … dieser Mann?
