Rocker Pete Doherty has penned a song for his friend Amy Winehouse - and revealed he had a secret romance with the singer before her death.

The Libertines frontman opened up in a newspaper interview, admitting he still has feelings for the late pop star.

"This is difficult for me to admit," he told the Mail On Sunday. "But, yes, it's true. Amy and I were lovers. I loved her then and, well, I still do today.

"But towards the end, as only lovers can, she became quite mean and cruel to me. She didn't suffer fools."

The Babyshambles star also said he had concerns about Amy's health before her death in July 2011, aged 27, from alcohol poisoning.

"She had such a big heart but she was physically small and increasingly frail and I never once saw her eat anything solid, just milkshakes," he said.

"Well, we did lose her. There but for the grace of God go I, is what I say."

Doherty's song for Amy is called Flags From The Old Regime and is set to feature on his next album.

He described it as "very slow and melodic" and said he has "never done a song like it" before.

"I’ve also got lots of lovely video footage of me and her just being together," he added. "But I haven’t been able to watch it yet."

Doherty, 33, now lives in Paris and recently turned his hand to acting.

He stars alongside model Lily Cole in the French art-house movie Confession D'Un Enfant Du Siecle, or Confessions of a Child of the Century, which is due out in December.
