She had a few good songs before "1 thing" the songs after wasn't that great. I believe if she dropped a song like "talkin to me" after "One thing" she wouldve been big. But at the same time, I don't think she was a great singer.

I wasn't being sarcastic about her tone reminding me of the female version of child MJ. But this is just my opinion. I really do love her voice.

Has a black artist ever become a SUPERSTAR off of one song?

That wasn't her only hit. She had other songs make it into the top 40 before the Touch album. But "1 Thing" was her big hit.

Didn't remember that she had two Grammy nominations for it.

It also didn't help her career that the two albums after 1 Thing had very modest sales.

I was one of the few people who bought her debut album and it was R&B gold...but there are plenty of other R&B singers that fell off that I would question why other than Amerie. She was a cute girl and had some bops...but she didn't have that stand out quality. Honestly it seemed the biggest novelty was her being half black and half Korean. She is happy and healthy and doing big things with writing/editing. She is enjoying her life and doesn't have those dead eyes that many people tend to have after years of fighting with the industry. She is not bitter and is making the best of her life. Probably happier than many people who are in this industry.

"Why Dont We Fall in Love" (#23) (2002) and her hook on Paradise (#36) with LL Cool J were her only top 40s before One Thing hit top 10.

There was no indication that she was ever going to be on Superstar level. Alot of r&b acts were working with just as much if not more. (Tamia, Ciara, Christina).

Or maybe producers offered Beyonce a sound that they knew she could do better...idk what Amerie y'all grew up with but her music was tragic. Her voice was tragic. Her dancing was tragic. Homegirl could never be where Beyonce is today.

Y'all are so quick to tear down any artist that has something to say about Beyonce. It's not that deep, I promise you. Amerie was never really a powerhouse vocalist, but she was great to listen to. Period.

Her first album was the shit, I get real nostalgic when I listen to it, also the song she did with LL.

Amerie was cute but I don't think she had that "it" factor. Her performances didn't demand attention. She was a ok singer with average dance moves. With that being said I loved her. Even more before the nose job. I liked her flat nose better then the new one. It made her whole look different. Now she looks like everybody else with the generic plastic surgery nose. That song she had with TI was trash and she never recovered. I think she could've eventually been a name in the pop lane.

I swear it must hurt to be this stupid, I can't relate. How the hell can CIL steal the sound from 1 thing, when CIL came out before 1 thing? So Beyonce traveled 2-3 yrs into the future to steal someone's sound? The lengths y'all will go to, to talk down and hate on this woman, is amazing. #BeyonceTheTimeTraveler

Ugh.....lemme explain as best I can without getting frigging irritated. The tea in the Alicia Keys thread said that shortly after Amerie released All I Have in 2002 that her and her collaborator/producer Rich Harrison started prepping and recording for her Touch album. Mind you this was late 02, early 03 ish when Beyonce was ready to hit the scene solo but her single from Gold member flopped and her team and her Dad went to the Columbia big wigs and stole (*cough* sorry).... I mean "sought out" Rich Harrison. They used his go-go beats for Crazy in Love and dropped it in 2003 before 1 THING came out in 2005.

You can also read about how her label wanted to block 1 thing from getting released/wanted her to remake it or give the beat to J. Lo during her Get Right phase.

Look, I'm not taking shit away from Beyonce. Nobody really can. She is a great performer and worked hard for her legacy BUT Beyonce stans burn me up getting so up in damn arms if someone says anything wrong about her. JESUS CHRIST! :e1_25:

It's blame Beyonce as to why Amerie didn't blow up? She had some cute songs but like everyone else said, there was no it factor and couldn't sing nor dance for shit. Same with Ashanti. Y'all just want to point the finger at Bey and her father like you always do.

And the same can be said for people who want to tear down Beyonce just to uplift other artists like they are doing in this thread.

My last comment, but this is why black music - particularly r&b - is dead.

Fonts in here are rewriting history as if nobody else knew how to sing or dance besides Beyoncé. PLEASE.

Janet and Whitney were shitting on everybody. Aaliyah and Ashanti. Then the list went down from there. There were many R&B solo girls that were big names, including Amerie. Stop playing.

Projecting, much?

R&B is dead because people aren't buying it. The reasons for this are varied.

And the question was superstar, not R&B superstar or bigger-than-Beyonce star. She didn't make the long haul just like most artists throughout music history. It's completely unremarkable.

I was really puzzled why Amerie wasnt out there doing her thing when she had hit after hit. She is beautiful, can sing, can dance. Can there only be 1 or 2 black[well she is biracial so ] black sounding women on top?

Beyonce to me declined musically after Bday. Havent listened to a full album since ..

Oh Please, Amerie had 1 hit wonder written all over her. I liked her. Why don't we fall in Love & One thing were my jams in HS, but she was very one dimensional as an entertainer/artist. Looks can only take you so far.

Nowadays you have to be a genre bender. All of her songs sounded the same.

Yes, I actually went back and listened to her stuff, and literally 90% of her music is trash, and she sings off-key 75% of the time EVEN on her studio records. I went back and listened to all of her stuff for nostalgia purposes and I was shocked that she ever even had a legit career. She should be happy for the success she had because if anyone was getting "shoved" and "forced" it was Amerie. Let us not act like some of the artists that have to be force-fed to the mainstream public are the ones who are mediocre and can't let their talent shine from themself.

And I'll be the FIRST person to stand up and say that Beyonce's first album was trash, but because she has been able to evolve as an artist and constantly reinvent her image and her sound, she has been able to achieve significant longevity in this field.

What the hell does Amerie do better than Beyonce? I'll wait. Stop this ridiculous fucking argument that Beyonce stole her thunder....

I never said anything about Beyoncé stealing Amelie's thunder lol literally nothing Beyoncé has done is similar to Amerie in the least. Beyoncé's first album in my opinion was not trash neither was Amerie's. I agree amerie's vocals are sub par but honestly music artists nowadays can barely sing anyways

Beyonce has had to battle rumors about sabotaging r&b and black artists since 2000. Its just not funny to people who grew up with her music.

People really resent Bey because Rich Harrison gave Beyonce a song that was never given to Amerie. People really wish Bey had of stopped when Kelly came out with Diliema and Ashanti was on top.

The "tea" from back then has been debunked yet people still shit on Beyonce's success.

Apparently there were outside forces trying to make sure she didn't blow up :disdain: but it was hard trying to get the song out there because I think her record company not only sat on it but wanted to give it to someone else Even though she wrote it and performed it. After that song the company like blocked her from releasing more or stalled her . I saw the video last month. No way she couldn't be a super star with a song that big (I still hear it or see it in stuff still) , those dance moves , looks and ability to write.

Amerie's first two albums sold around 500K each. 1 thing was a worldwide hit. It makes literally no business why Amerie's third album appeared to have been stifled at every turn. Case in point, 'Because I Love it' was bizarrely released overseas/ Europe first. Promo for lead single virtually non existent in US. Columbia had arranged an exclusive deal to sell the album via Walmart in May 2007 for US release. But it wasn't until 8 or 9 months later that physical copies of the album would be widely available at all outlets. By then, Columbia had COMPLETELY scrapped all promo - Meaning no more singles. No videos. No nothing.

Amerie was dropped from the label shortly after :disdain:

JLO can't sing for shit but she can entertain and she works her ass off. She's not my cup of tea but I won't deny her work ethic. Katy and Taylor are white girls and white girls have the luxury of being mediocre black girls do not. For a black girl to be successful they have to work 3 times as hard and be 5 times smarter than white women. Unless Amarie was willing to work her ass off than no she couldn't sit at the table. Ashanti, Jlo, and Rihanna are all still working in the music industry Amerie is doing youtube videos on books. She clearly was not cut out for the business.

.you forget how many things were handed to jlo.. i mean people gave her entire songs that she didn't have to worry about writing, producing, or even singing..she just had to mixed her nonsinging voice on some of the lyrics while someone else sang the whole chorus.. i saw the interview with ashanti "i'm doing all the work on writing and singing this song and they gave it to her" but then she tried to come back and say "but i was young and this was my dues"

to me Amerie did do the work..she made them release One Thing and worked hard to make sure the song SHE WROTE and song on didn't just get handed to somebody..sometimes it isn't how hard or good you are but how much politics can affect you being heard..thats how alot of people can go from being a big hit to not having a follow up anything.
. and she isn't just "reading books on youtube" she is still get paid off One Thing and living a good life..so lets not at like shes working at a supermarket or on drugs. her net worth is 6 million..for someone who hasn't release a big song in 12 years..to me thats still good enough

Then the last part of what I wrote was not directed at you, but moreso everyone else in this thread who claims that Beyonce "stole" Amerie's style

Thank Puff for that. However, J.Lo has always been ambitious as hell. I thought I heard Amerie say on a Breakfast Club interview that she quit the business.

No I didn't forget JLO had help but she still worked her ass off and continues to do so now. I think you are missing the whole point of my post. So let me state this in another way. Ashanti wrote her own music and hasn't had a hit in years but she is still working in the music industry. If Amerie was meant to be a super star but didn't have the push she would still be active in music not on youtube doing book reviews.

New artist have songs giving to them and snatched from them all the time it's the nature of the business. Making an album is only one aspect of being a super star THE ARTIST not the label has to be able to promote their music and entertain people. Whitney didn't write but she could sing, had charisma, and was entertaining. I liked Amerie but she was a subpar singer and mediocre performer at best.

Rich Harrison only did 2 songs on DIL Crazy in Love and Be with you. Scott Storch had more hits on that album than he did. Even if Amerie was planning on recording CIL do you really think it would have been as big as Beyonce made it? The song was so big because Beyonce performed the shit out of that song and because her and Jay had great chemistry.
