I watched all 9 American Pie movies, and here are my thoughts on it.

Discussion

Before you comment, yes, there are nine movies in total. Four are original films, and five are direct-to-DVD spin-offs. And I've watched them all! I wrote each movie review a bit long, so I've shortened them all here. Now, I'd like to share my list ranking the movies from the best to worst:

  1. American Pie 2 (2001): Slightly cheesier than the original, but I also find it funnier, more satisfying, and just as good as the first, perhaps even a little better. I liked that it doesn't add many heartwarming moments like the first film, which is probably why I enjoyed it a bit more. The scene with the "two lesbians" is easily the most memorable and funniest moment of the series. I also thoroughly enjoyed the friendship and the chemistry between Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan. 8.5 out of 10.

  2. American Reunion (2012): It was the second movie I saw in theaters when it was first released. I probably expected a generic comedy that lacked nostalgia, since I didn't remember much about it. However, what truly surprised me was how entertaining it turned out to be, and funny enough to have me laughing throughout. The humor, most of the jokes, and the scenarios were all cleverly hilarious. I loved the warm summer film aesthetic, which looked quite fit and pleasant. It was great to see all the original cast members back together. Nothing felt missing. Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge shared short scenes, but they quickly created excellent chemistry together. It works well as a satisfying finale and wraps up everything nicely. 8.5 out of 10.

  3. American Pie (1999): The entire cast is excellent, except for Thomas Ian Nicholas, who is rather forgettable in his role. It has some good humor and a great atmosphere. And I absolutely loved Seann William Scott's high energy in his role. It went from being a little wild with tons of dick jokes to developing romantic relationships, which I'm not much of a fan of. I think the earlier acts show that it just works better as a straight-up sex comedy, in my opinion. But then it works everything fine for what it is. 8.5 out of 10.

  4. American Wedding (2003): Using a wedding theme in the American Pie series was kind of lazy. I think it’s still a fun movie, it falls short of what you’d expect from American Pie. This movie feels out of place and empty, missing some of the characters from the previous films, especially Chris Klein’s. I don’t think his character was even mentioned. The different color grading and overall vibe between the films are jarring. It seems like each film had different cinematographers. I liked the dark tint in the first film, but this one is too summery, giving it a very campy look. Seann William Scott's Stifler acted like a sort of retarded sociopath. The other characters felt bland and were lazily acted, with no compelling storylines involved either. It made me think that The Hangover (2009) is everything that this movie missed. All in all, it’s just a campy and entertaining movie without heart. 7 out of 10.

  5. American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile (2006): It's definitely a better, wilder, grosser, and more typical American Pie movie than the previous direct-to-DVD one, Band Camp. I like that the storyline takes place in college. The storyline is more enjoyable, and there are funnier moments throughout. The opening scene is hilarious. While the football scene feels a tad long, the running naked and half-naked party scenes are all pretty entertaining. I also genuinely enjoyed the silly and gross jokes. 6.5 out of 10.

  6. American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (2009): I found this movie quite enjoyable, even though it's the second lowest-rated movie of the series. Some jokes feel dated, but the scene with the old prostitute gave me a good laugh. The opening scene is funny too. The CGI moose raping Stifler was wild. There are plenty of funny moments throughout. Beyond the humor, the movie has a fun plot, an enjoyable cast, and all solid chemistries. 6.5 out of 10.

  7. American Pie Presents: Band Camp (2005): The film’s production quality is noticeably low, yet it's mildly watchable and has some good American Pie-style jokes. I thought the lead actor who plays Matt was awful and annoying. While the ending may be cringy and weak, the movie overall is okay. It’s not terrible or unwatchable, it just simply serves as a time-killer, nothing else. 6 out of 10.

  8. American Pie Presents: Beta House (2007): It honestly felt empty and boring with a weak plot. There was just a lot of unnecessary nudity, and the sheep scene was both funny and so, so gross. I wasn't a fan of the first hour, but the competition against the nerds afterward was really entertaining. That's all I can say about it. It just felt too short because it only runs for 83 minutes without the credits, and I only enjoyed about like 20 minutes of it. 5.5 out of 10.

  9. American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules (2020): It's a standalone sequel, but it feels more like a female-led reboot of the first film. I thought it had some hilarious scenes, but for Christ’s sake, it felt extremely cheap with horrible editing. The female squad in an American Pie movie? Please, this is not the American Pie it used to be. Honestly, this movie feels like a lazy cash grab. The acting was boring too. I thought Lizze Broadway, best known for Gen V, was a bright spot as a female Stifler. It was also nice to see Zachary Gordon, who plays Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It’s not a terrible movie in general, just mediocre, disappointing, and offensive to American Pie fans. 5.5 out of 10.

Has anyone else seen all nine movies here? How would you rank these 4 original films? Sorry for a bit long post, but thank you for reading word for word anyway, and have a nice day, lol.

cgi moose raping Stifler

There's a sentence I thought I'd never read.

I have so many questions now. Is it Sean William Scott in that movie? I'd be surprised if it is

The spinoffs are all about Stifler, Sean William Scott's character's brother or cousins. This is a perfect explanation; www.reddit.com/r/movies/s/pkklHPLnpj

I watched this when it came out and the moose rape has stayed with me ever since.

Nine? Good heavens.

u/dylanah avatar

There are four that actually released in theaters. The rest (aside from this new women-led one I didn’t know about) were straight-to-DVD for the T&A factor.

Downvoted . Sorry. I watch these movies for their deep dives into our culture. And the plots.

I knew there was a sequel, and maybe a third. But nine? Why, just why???

u/Killboypowerhed avatar

There isn't really nine. There's the original trilogy and fourth one years later. Then there's five unrelated movies that they slapped the American Pie name on and released straight to DVD

u/SLCer avatar

They're not unrelated, tho. At least not all. They're just spin-offs of the original.

Band Camp is about Stifler's younger brother, who's in the original, being sent to band camp. Eugene Levy plays his same character from the series, while Chuck Sherman (the Sherminator) also reprises his role.

The Naked Mile is also about a Stifler family member - the cousin of Steve & Matt - who is about to graduate high school as a virgin. Eugene Levy once again returns as Jim's dad.

Beta House is a direct sequel to Naked Mile as Erik, the cousin of Steve & Matt, goes to college. Eugene Levy, shocker, is also in this as an alumnus to the fraternity Erik is pledging to.

The Book of Love is about a book mentioned in the original American Pie. It also stars Levy because why not?

Girls' Rule is connected via Stifler again (one of his girl cousins I think), and this movie is basically a remake-ish of the original with girls instead. Levy does NOT show up in this one.

And I know way too much about the American Pie series lmao

Most American Pie sequels:

“I am your father’s, brother’s, nephew’s, cousin’s, former roommate.”

u/Killboypowerhed avatar

They took unrelated scripts, changed a character name to stiffler, added Eugene levy and called it a spinoff.

He was a great part of the series. I heard he pushed the sequels mainly because it gave him a lot of chances to fly on Hollywoods dime. Respect.

Those top 4 is probably how I would rank them, too. I was honestly surprised with how good Reunion was.

Watching all four of the originals back to back turns them from dumb sex comedies to actually kind of touching movies about friends growing up and apart and I think Reunion really nailed that landing by recognizing that. It’s a series about awkward teens becoming semi-functional adults and it’s something I think we can all relate to.

Same! Watching it again after 12 years was a great nostalgic experience, especially since it was only my second movie ever seen in theaters.

Oz is my favorite character, and it was cool to see him again. I honestly felt like he was sorely missing in Wedding.

I'm glad to hear American Pie 2 seems to be the fan favorite. The soundtrack is the best of the series, a perfect mix of late 90s/early 2000s rock that instantly takes you right back to that era.

I'd compare all of the spinoffs to eating a late night pizza slice after the bar. Cheesy, not great quality-wise, but it fills you up and hits the spot for some reason. Though I thought Girls Rules tried too hard.

u/LongTimesGoodTimes avatar

If the worst American Pie movie is still 5.5 out of 10 I have to question the scale.

Its all relative, not everyone likes these movies, some do...but...considering that Eugene Levy is the main guy behind most of the straight to DVD, they can't be that bad, I have seen a couple and they are watchable. Now if you were to create a 0 to 10 movie scale and lets put a Cinemax softcore porn at 0 and Casablanca at 10...the American Pie straight to video series is going to land somewhere in the middle, considering how much garbage there is out there

He's in them, I wouldn't say he's behind them. He's the guy from the original movie that they decided to pay or was cheap enough to get in them.

I saw most of them growing up and they're fine but I wouldn't say that they are as high on that scale as OP had them.

u/vomita_conejitos avatar

He did a GQ video recently and said that he was a whore for the paycheck, would spend a few days to shoot his scenes and leave

I agree. I love the first 4 but most of the spinoffs were horrible imo. Like sure if there was absolutely nothing else i could watch then id turn it on but that’s not saying much

Except the review also said they only enjoyed 20 minutes of it. A 5.5 for that is insanely generous.

u/cronedog avatar

It was a 3 to me. A pretty terrible experience.

There are only two, or possibly three, movies in the series that most people would think it sucks. However, I don't think the franchise is the worst thing you could watch.

If you genuinely enjoy cheesy movies and watch them for fun, you'll be fine.

Plus the nudity helps quite a bit

Do Police Academy next

I’m just imagining he used the video games rating scale, because then it kind of makes sense

u/treerabbit23 avatar

Maybe start with “the scale is set by a guy willing to watch all nine American Pie movies on purpose” and work backwards from there.

I’m afraid this gets my lowest rating ever: seven thumbs up.

My ranking is:

  1. American pie 2

  2. American Pie

  3. reunion

  4. Wedding

  5. Band camp

  6. Book of love

  7. Naked Mile

  8. Beta house

The spinoffs are so bad they aren’t even worth watching though.

Edited

Eugene Lévy (the father) recently did one of those vids talking about his most iconic characters, and he openly admits he whored himself for the money by accepting to appear on those DVD sequels.

u/omicron7e avatar

Can you blame him? He’s known, but his career wasn’t exactly on fire.

Doing this crap is what allowed him to make Christopher Guest films.

u/Calchal avatar

But was his bed on fire with passionate love?

More replies

Whored: To sell out for money

Hoard: To collect in bulk and hide or store away.

Hoared: moldy or musty

Thanks! I'll edit my comment.

Things I remember about the American Pie movies

  • Pie fucking, obviously

  • Eugene Levy being great in all of them

  • Stiffler became increasingly annoying as the series continued and going full cartoon by the 3rd one

  • Feeling like the characters' lives moved way too fast, one movie ago you just graduated high school, now you're getting married?

  • It being really weird that Oz wasn't in the Wedding movie and I'm pretty sure he did that scifi rollerblade movie instead which is funnier than anything in Wedding

  • The girl Jim used to babysit in the Reunion movie having shockingly huge tits when she gets topless, like goddamn, it was movie magic how small she looked clothed

The weird thing is of the four theatrically released movies, I've seen them all multiple times and this is all I really remember.

u/Noname_left avatar

I liked the nod he did in reunion where oz said he missed his wedding, he wasn’t going to miss the reunion.

It’s not even that they’re bad, it’s that it’s basically the same film made over and over again. Oh, and there’s like no real plot

Fun read. I would personally go 1, reunion, 2, 3.

I feel like the first American Pie blended the raunchy humour with the heartfelt and sweet moments perfectly. I think that was the key to it's success. I like that the boys all ultimately get their comeuppance for their poor attitudes and grow up by the end of the movie (besides stifler of course).
