Even so, NYC is the very best one yet for me, while it leans much less on humor to score points. On the contrary, the undertone is grim and disturbing in a whole new way. The scares are not always in plain sight, but more metaphorical and layered. And thus it maybe asks too much thought and empathy of its audience. Maybe for a lot of people in late 2022 a show about the rise of AIDS was too soon after that other pandemic to appreciate. However, to me it's just these aspects that hit the right spot. The storytelling is slow and emotional, the imagery is provocative. But what strikes me most is its true, exquisitely pure portrayal of this point in history and the sad end of an era.
