I like the size and weight of this volume. It is easy to carry around and have handy. It is the size of a daily planner maybe a bit smaller. It is roughly as thick as a 3" binder. Although the size and weight are great, I do not like the font size. It is very small, but bold. The front and back cover are pretty durable with excessive usage. Overall I am happy with the volume.

I wanted a dictionary to keep with me wherever I was writing, small enough to grab, with print large enough to read. Computer dictionaries tend to be a pain and I admit to loving the heft of a real book whose pages I can turn at will. This little guy is the perfect companion. Illustrations accompany many words and many of those words are new. I'd recommend the American Heritage Dictionary to every writer, student, and teacher I know. Actually, I recommend it to everyone who wants an excellent, portable dictionary. (I just used it to check the right spelling of "recommend.")

I am a budding writer. As part of my research for developing a freelance commercial writer practice, I read "The Well Fed Writer" by Peter Bowerman. In his discussion of writer tools, Bowerman recommended The American Heritage Dictionary above all others. He called it "THE happening dictionary out there."

How do you measure a dictionary? I looked up current usage of words not in common use when I bought my Webster's Collegiate twenty-odd years ago. I found a definition of "hip-hop" [n. 1. A popular urban youth culture, closely associated with rap music and the style of innre-city African-Americans.] There is a brief discussion of the distinction in use of the words "Hispanic" and "Latino." Though not an encyclepedia, American Heritage lists prominent historic figures with the source of their fame and life years.

I bought the paperback version for the price. Next time, I will buy the trade edition [larger paperback] or hard cover version to take advantage of the larger type. The paperback is pratical for carrying around. I use my dictionary in my office.

However, the definitions for each word were descriptive and differences between definitions were easy to distinguish.

Digital may have it's place, however cannot touch the amount of words seen by a student, while actually "looking" for the required word. Still anxiously awaiting the other 6 promised copies. The type in this dictionary is microscopic. I realize they had to make it small to fit everything into the format, but it's rendered everything pretty much too small to be of use.

My biggest gripe however is that the appendices are absent. They're the whole reason I bought the hardcopy in the first place. Useless.

One other thing, more to do with the supplier than the publisher; my copy came with a section of the middle pages missing about 3/16th" at the top. Probably a seconds copy, but not what I paid for. Lame service, to say the least.
