Hocus Pocus (1993)
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)

Starting off with a double-bill.

Hocus Pocus was one of my wife's favourite seasonal movies growing up, whereas it passed me by completely. We've seen it together a few times as adults and I went from lukewarm on it to enjoying it as part of the season. It's covered in Autumn/Halloween set decor, is ultimately harmless and the fun of watching the trio of witches enjoying the chance to vamp it up becomes contagious.

29 years later we have a sequel. Why? Well because the original has an established following, the leads are charismatic and seemingly longing to do another and Disney has a streaming service that needs content. It certainly doesn't exist because the creators had a burning desire to open up or take the series in an interesting new direction. This isn't inherently a bad thing however, sometimes it's fun to just go around again.

The new cast of young teens are serviceable, the witches however look fantastic and pick up right where they left off with these characters as if no time had passed at all. The scenarios are familiar but the new gags had us both laughing a number of times and despite being 115ish minutes of fan service everyone seems to be working their hardest to take us truly back to the world of Hocus Pocus. Doug Jones gets an expanded role as his friendly zombie Billy, well earned both due to his improved star power over the years and truthfully because he was always an underrated performer. His character isn't entirely necessary to the plot here, but that's not what this film is about.

On the whole this plays like any reheated throwback 80s/90s sequel to any successful one-off movie (except it took 3 decades to get here). It's Ghostbusters 2. It's Die Hard 2. It's Home Alone 2. It's an encore, here because fans demanded it and little other reason...

But we laughed and enjoyed ourselves, so that's fine.

It'll for sure be watched again in the future.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Easing into the season with a film I shockingly haven't seen in yeeaaaars.

Again it's a film dripping with the seasonal spirit as Johnny Depp's nervous investigative scientist tries to solve mystery of a supernatural headless horseman in the titular village, full of pumpkins, scarecrows, dead woodland and overworked dry ice machines.

The cast is an enjoyable who's who, made up of some of our favourite underloved veterans.

The near monochromatic visuals are striking, almost graphic novel-esque, however the central mystery leaves a lot to be desired dramatically. Yes it is enough to watch Depp fret about whilst everyone else look either suspicious or concerned, with regular punctuations of a headless horseman twatting someone's block off left right and centre every ten minutes. Despite this constant violent distraction however the drama never really takes off, and you'd be forgiven for forgetting every characters name almost instantly.

Also the central romance looks a bit odd. Whilst it's probably era correct (not that this is to be expected in a film with a headless murder spook) seeing Depp try to cop off with Christina Ricci is a bit off-putting. Not only knowing there's a near twenty year gap between them, but mostly because she still looks about ten.

Movie 1: The Seventh Curse (1986)

A weird mixture of genres from this Hong Kong offering.

We open with a hostage situation, and the police decide to send in the most Kung Fu proficient Doctor to tend to injured hostages and also infiltrate and diffuse the situation. Its a stellar action opening full of trademarks of the HK action movies of the era; people diving through windows shooting guns, fast paced martial arts and an overall general lack of care for the health of the performers. We find out that the previous year, on an expedition to Thailand, the Doctor came across a death cult that was about to sacrifice an innocent woman. In trying to save her (from a Kung Fu vampire skeleton puppet that morphs into a Xenomorph looking creature after it feeds, obviously) the Doctor has been cursed and his blood will explode after a year.

So he heads back to Thailand to fight the cult and end the curse.

I was on-board with the action, but was unsure of the horror direction the movie was supposed to be going. When the Doctor first spies the cult, the cult leader gets into an argument with another memberand then throws a foetus at him (which is also a vampire). It was here that I realised the nuttiness of what I was about to watch.
Action comes thick, fast and often, and I would suggest the movie is more of a Kung Fu movie than a horror, however once the horror comes its Evil Dead 2 level silliness and I can totally get on board with that.

Also Chow Yun-Fat shoots a monster with a rocket launcher.

Movie 2: Cemetery of Terror (1985)

In this Mexican slasher movie that I stumbled across on Shudder, were offered a not-at-all subtle mix of horror genres and clear influences.

On the night of Halloween (Like in Halloween) a group of Medical students head out to an abandoned cemetery household for a party (kinda like The Evil Dead). Here they come across a creepy book that claims to raise the dead (like The Evil Dead). Meanwhile a paranoid Doctor (like in Halloween) is awaiting the cremation of a serial killer. When the medical students steal the killers body to do a mock resurrection in the local cemetery, the Doctor drives about the town screaming at how much danger everyone is in from the serial killer (Like Halloween). The killer is resurrected, and then slooooowly walks around offing teens (like Halloween).

Meanwhile a group of children are trick or treating and decide to investigate said cemetery at the time this all goes down.

This is low budget slasher nonsense that gets into its resurrected killer groove pretty early. The killers weapon of choiceis to tear people up with his bare hands, shredding them like the Wolf Man. Later into the movie, just when you think you have the film sussed out, an entire cemeteries worth of zombies come bursting out of their graves to join the fray. Not the shit contact lenses and a dash of blood zombies either, but old school, cobweb covered, gothic rotting corpses.

Fun. Low budget. Daft.

Red State (2011)

I've not seen this since release and it's definitely Kevin Smith's most underrated movie.

An out of left field straight horror/thriller where a trio or horned up teenage boys are kidnapped, held hostage and intended to be sacrificed by a far far far right Christian minister (Michael Parks) and his flock who intend to wipe out all sinners.

Parks is great, reeling off almost an entire acts worth of fire and brimstone dialogue. John Goodman is reliably perfect as a conflicted FBI agent called to the scene to take care of the entire thing and the young actors are all convincingly terrified throughout. It's part horror, part siege movie, and whilst not one of the best horror movies ever made, it is certainly the most I've ever seen Smith stretch himself as a director.

It's also the last time he's really had anything to say and then been able to successfully convey that message. Tusk and Yoga Hosers had little to say aside from getting stoned and writing a script isn't a reliable formula. Jay & Bob is nostalgic but is simply a tired repeat of previous success. It could be argued that Clerks III had something to say about the purpose of life, but the message gets mixed and comes out almost accidentally nihilistic. Here however Smith is completely purposefully nihilistic, flinging spit and venom all over the screen. Whilst I'm glad he's seemingly in a better headspace in his personal life nowadays, and I'm always happy to see old characters return, I do miss his coherent storytelling.

Halloween Horror #5 🎃

Movie 1: The Witches (1990)

Like most of my generation I grew up reading Roald Dahl, and like most I grew up watching the adaptations. I haven't seen The Witches since those days so I was mostly coming at it with fresh eyes.
And it's poop.

Don't get me wrong, the Jim Henson effects are great as per usual, but the other than the famed 'conference scene' (that has so many men dressed as witches that it looks like a Monty Python convention) the film feels like such a cheap UK TV movie special. I can see why kids can get caught up in it, but as an adult (who openly watches 'kids' film/TV) I was quite disappointed.

Movie 2: Blacula (1972)

Now this is a film that took me by surprise. An African prince and his wife meet with Count Dracula to discuss halting the slave trade. That meeting goes as bitey as one could expect, leading Dracula to christen his new vampire "Blacula" which is admittedly hilarious.

Other than this one line however, the film plays things relatively straight. Our fanged protagonist wakes up the city in modern day and begins pursuing a woman who resembles his long dead wife whilst a police officer tries to piece local bite wound crimes together.

This flits from a genuine attempt at Hammer-style horror, police investigation scenes and then a couple of nightclub sequences that lean into the Blaxplotation roots. Performances however are quite admirable, and despite playing "Blacula" William Marshall actually comes out of this with his dignity intact, far more so infact than Christopher Lee does in his final two 1970's set Hammer movies.

Had the film had less parodic title I think it might have had more legs as a serious 1970s genre offering.

Halloween Horror #6 🎃

[Show spoiler]

Movie 1: Idle Hands (1999)

Ahh slacker cinema. What began in the eighties went on to boom in the nineties with 'Slacker', 'Clerks', 'Mallrats', 'Airheads', 'Dazed and Confused', 'The Big Lebowski', 'Friday' and it's sequels. It began to blend into the early 00's with 'Dude, Where's My Car', 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back' and eventually turned to horror in 'Idle Hands'. I remember enjoying this enough years ago and it was no different this time around.

Here on Halloween a lazy teen finds his right hand murderously possessed Evil Dead 2 style and with the help of his two stoner friends has to stop it killing off the hot girl across the street that he's been crushing on (an early role for Jessica Alba, who has the thankless task of being little else than a horned up hot trophy for the lead).

It's all over the shop. There's very little narrative, a silly situation is presented and our characters are just dealing with it. The film being a comedy means there's little drama presented when people do die, it's mostly presented as humorous daft gags which is absolutely fine. It is far more enjoyable than the reviews would have you believe though. Devon Sawa, Seth Green and Elden Hansen are all charismatic, effects work is great, it has a nostalgic 00's look about it, the soundtrack is rad and it's coated in Halloween.

It's not a horror classic, I'm unsure if it's even a cult film..but it feels like it wants to be.

Movie 2: Scream, Blacula, Scream (1973)

Not quite as strong as it's predecessor, but still a damn good attempt at a Hammer-esque horror, SBS see's Blacula return, raised from the dead as a tool of revenge by a member of a voodoo cult who was shunned as their next leader.

Instantly the vampire turns on his resurecctor, before turning a vampire cult of his own, so that he can get ahold of the voodoo cult leader (early Pam Grier, who is quite subdued here) and have her remove the demon from within him making him mortal again and removing his blood lust.

When I read voodoo cult and Pam Grier I expected this one to go off of the Blaxplotation deep end, however the cult is seemingly implemented well and Pam isn't yet famous for Foxy Brown or Coffy and so can play this role quietly without the weight of expectation. Some of the performances are a step down from the first installment, but it keeps it's head above water and again William H. Marshall is magnificent.

Some of the scenes are musicless and deliberately paced, however there's also some fantastically creepy staging for Blacula's subordinate vampires in a couple of scenes, and a decent rumble in the third act. Once again the lead is only referred to as 'Blacula' in a recap at the opening and again toward the end. Had those scenes been removed we'd be looking at a second genuine entry in the 1970s vampire movie canon.

Halloween Horror #7 🎃

[Show spoiler]

First up was the premiere episode of Chucky season 2, which I won't go too far into suffice to say any slasher fan should have gone through the Child's Play/Chucky movies by now because the show is a treat.

Movie #1: Werewolf by Night (2022)

Marvel are bringing their horror game into canon with this 55 minute black and white special presentation. It's a 'Most Dangrous Game' situation as a group of strangers are pitted against each other (and a monster) for a prize. Purposeful old school Universal Monster undertones with this one, not only with the black and white, but the use of shadows and a great Lon Chaney style for the Wolf Man, based on Jack Pierce's original 1940's design, which I did not expect in Marvel's CG heavy world. A bit bloodier than usual for Marvel, assuming the black and white lets them get away with it...which of course is absurd.

Movie #2: Malignant (2021)

You know how 'Jeepers Creepers' begins as one kind of horror movie, then suddenly becomes a completely different one? Well such is the case with Malignant.

We begin with James Wan's signature modern horror style (think The Conjuring and Insidious), mixed with a bit of Sam Raimi. Then we dip into Giallo, with a lot of frozen panicked eye shots and saturated reds. Then before you know it we're in full on hyper violent action mode with all sense of reality gone completely out of the window.

It's totally gonzo, and it looks great, but it didn't lure is in as much as other reviewers. The entire movie is predicated around a central mystery that, if you piece it together in the opening act like we did, you're basically waiting two hours for the movie to catch up. At an hour and a half this might have been crazy enough to work, but it's reviewed well elsewhere..so what do I know?

Halloween Horror #8 🎃

Goosebumps and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2015 & 2018)

Goosebumps was the perfect 'gateway horror' for me as a kid, and so it stands that the first Goosebumps movie is the perfect gateway for it's generation. A monster melee of all the Goosebump book's creatures breaking free and causing havoc across the town, with charismatic teen leads and Jack Black gently hamming it up as author R.L Stine (who looks and sounds nothing at all like Jack Black).

You get more from the film if, like me, you've read the books and know the monsters, otherwise it's still a colourful adventure film that truthfully has more in common with Jumanji than any real horror movie, despite having an evil dummy, werewolf, zombies and clown in it.

Goosebumps 2 is warmed up leftovers. Essentially a retread of the original but this time the dummy brings Halloween decorations to life instead of novels. Jack Black's energy is sorely missed, reduced to a third act cameo although the guy voicing Slappy is doing a flawless Black impression. It's not a terrible movie, it's just a bit of a naff cash-in that doesn't really move things in any new direction.

To this day I will remain confused as to why Sony don't simply adapt the books individually every Halloween under a 'Goosebumps' banner. I think they'd own the kids Halloween season box office for years.

Halloween Horror #9 🎃

[Show spoiler]

Movie #1: The Haunting

A classic ghost story of 4 strangers set to occupy a famously haunted mansion for a couple of nights for the purpose of study. The horror here is mostly psychological, a slow burn turn of the screw, particularly for one member of the group who feels like the house is affecting her specifically. This isnt a hokey haunted house b-movie with rubber bats and skeletons on a string. In fact Im not sure there are any effects work in the film at all, just a decent script, four strong actors and inventive camerawork and sound design (some of which can be found in The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2).
Its showing its age at this point in time, however the ghost story nature of it still comes through well, even if its no longer keeping anyone up at night.
The novel that this film is based on (The Haunting of Hill House not to be confused with the movie The House on Haunted Hill) has been adapted a number of times, including an awful 1999 remake of this movie (from the director of Speed and Twister?) and most recently as a Netflix drama by Mike Flanagan.

Movie #2: Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009)

I have to assume the thinking here was to try to cash-in on Shaun of the Deads success, casting the two male leads of a successful TV sitcom (Gavin and Stacey vs Spaced) in a UK set horror parody. We knew we were in for a terrible time when the Blu Ray reviews were from early 00s lad mag Nuts.
Its shit. Look, like most humans I find James Corden to be just the most irritating, and judging by this film Matthew Horne is seemingly empty as a performer, so why would we pick up a badly reviewed horror comedy starring the two of them, filled with obvious and awful lads humour? Well the answer is simple, I saw that Paul McGann had a prominent role in it as a throwback Hammer Horror style vampire fighting vicar.

We couldnt turn that down.

But yea, the movie is terrible. The women are obviously reduced to nothing but cardboard cut-out T&A punchlines. To be fair the men arent exactly represented any better with Matthew Horne playing a wet mop of a human and Corden supposedly the lads lad banty banter type, whos one joke is lol yea sex. Basically nobody comes off well represented here. Which might be fine if it were funny, but its not. Theres a lot of weird editing in here where characters just speed up at the end of scenes as if that makes things more exciting. A lot of slapstick silly noises that I think are supposed to replicate Edgar Wrights whip pan soundsbut are terrible. We get page flipping effects wipes, and fonts popping up to tell us where we are every two seconds despite the entire film taking place in two locations in one village. There are moments where it has an enjoyably hokey EC comics look to it, covered in smoke machines and bathed in blues/red. But on the whole it looks and plays like a terrible straight-to-dvd fart. I get the movies it wants to pastiche here (the title being a pay on Roman Polanskis Fearless Vampire Killers), but its justbad.

McGann is great though. This is to be expected.

(also the Blu Ray hilariously censors the word 'Lesbian'....as if it's offensive)

Halloween Horror #10 🎃

[Show spoiler]

Movie #1: The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)

We watched the first of these two films last month and found it a mixed bag. It replicated some of the spooky, stalky atmosphere of the original Halloween but as the villains had the victims helpless and pretty much dead to rights from the opening it was difficult to get involved in the cat and mouse scenario as they shouldve been dead before the first act was finished.

Interestingly this sequel is reviewed as a lesser movie, but we had a far more enjoyable time with it. This time its a family of four that come under siege, and some of the eeriness of peering around the screen trying to see if The Strangers are stood in the corner of the frame has been replaced with more crowd pleasing and bombastic set pieces. The Strangers are the same creepy murder stalkers from the previous instalment however, its not a betrayal of their original characterisation, but this time the cat and mouse works better as The Strangers are having to hunt down a family that are running around here, there and everywhere instead of the victims standing idly by unaware that a masked maniac is stood 2 steps away from them (and for some reason not chopping them up).

Its granted that the characters make a few stock horror movie stupid decisions that will frustrate an audience, however the opening does a good enough job at making us relate to their struggles and see them as people before the titular villains turn up, and ensures that were invested in the chase that follows.

A great little cult modern slasher movie.

Movie #2: Casper (1995)

Theres a scene in Casper, right at the start (just after a priest gets his neck broken?) where Dan Aykroyd comes running out of the haunted house, in full Ghostbusters regalia, tells the homeowners to call someone else, and then runs off. This 30 second joke ruined the rest of the movie for seven year old me, who was so elated about seeing a Ghostbuster turn up on the big screen that I was disappointed they didnt appear for the rest of the movie.
I havent seen the movie since.

And it seems like Ive not really missed out. The CG effects were obviously incredible for their time and to be fair to them still hold up today, more or less, the script however doesnt feel complete at all. The jokes arent particularly jokey, the plot sort of never really starts (and before you know it..its at its conclusion). Most of the film consists of the three ghost uncles screaming things at the camera, none of which are really entertaining.

Christina Ricci is great here however. She exudes confidence and charisma which far surpasses that of 90% of child actors (we all know this from her Wednesday days) and its genuinely confusing how this didnt manage to translate into a more successful A-List career as an adult in the way it did for, say, Kirsten Dunst or Scarlett Johansson. Her relationship with an imaginary CG blob is genuine, believable and about the only thing worth taking away from an otherwise largely unsuccessful movie. Dont get me wrong, the film may still work OK for children, but it doesnt quite graduate to being narratively strong or particularly quotable or comical for the rest of the family.

Halloween Horror #11 🎃

To the Devil a Daughter (1976)

One of Hammer's last movies, and the last with Christopher Lee until their resurrection in 2011. Here Lee portrays a priest who worships Satan and is attempting to force the birth of the anti-christ through a young girl raised as a nun at the satanic temple. A horror writer is hired by the regretful father of the girl, to nab her and keep her safe from the cult.

It's a shit film.

It's all a bit non-sensical, my description above is what I pieced together through abstract editing and plodding sagging plotting throughout. I'd say it was trying to rip off The Omen, but it came out in the same year.

Disappointing, mostly because Lee and Hammer are usually such a winning formula.

Nevermind.
Halloween Horror #12 🎃

[Show spoiler]The Craft (1996)

Another I'd managed to miss until now, The Craft focuses on a group of teenage girls who are outcasts at school, have a host of personal problems and practice witchcraft. When a new girl turns up who shows potential for power they invite her to the group to begin channeling their energy into improving their situation.

I can see how this film appealed to teenage girls, particularly those who feel ostracised or outcasted. The girls have an easy going chemistry with each other, and the themes of sisterhood and the healing power a close knit group of friends can provide (magical or otherwise) are pretty overt.

These themes unfortunately get a bit trampled on when it moves on to later themes of absolute power corrupting. It's an unavoidable direction for the film to head in, and not necessarily a terrible one, but after two acts of sisterhood and friendship it feels like the inevitable conflict arrives a bit too swift for a couple of the characters.

On the whole though, an inoffensive movie that fits perfectly in the 90's alt grunge era.

Halloween Horror #13 🎃

[Show spoiler]Halloween (1978)
Halloween (2018)

It's a bit too far away from Oct. 31st than I'd like to be watching Michael Myers **** up Haddonfield, but as the last in the new trilogy drops tonight it makes sense to get stuck in.

I covered these last year so won't go over them too much again, suffice to say the 1978 John Carpenter classic is a masterclass in suspense and seasonal mood setting. The real "Curse of Michael Myers" is that the film is so deceptively simple that studios have been trying and failing to replicate it's thrills for years. With little to no budget, just a bare bones script, perfectly shot, edited, and scored, with Donald Pleasence on peak form (despite thinking his character was 'overwritten'). It's just not Halloween without 'Halloween'

The 2018 film is a noble attempt to pick up forty years later and start a new story (by ignoring the mostly awful eighties sequels and recreating the original, more or less, but with a gun nut Laurie Strode). It's a perfectly acceptable continuation if there has to be one....which of course there doesn't, however it's far better constructed than previous sequels, and as a bonus has Carpenter back on score duty.

Halloween Horror #14 🎃

[Show spoiler]Halloween Kills (2021)
Halloween Ends (2022)

Halloween Kills I won't go too much into as I reviewed it last year. It's a terrible script full of dumb characters, and tries to fit in a message about mob mentality that it fumbles badly. It scores high on the carnage o'meter however, turning Myers into a geriatric Terminator. It's shot well, has the gimmick and momentum of being set on the same night as the previous movie and a kick ass score. As a movie it's shit, as a slasher sequel it's stabariffic.

Halloween Ends.....hooo-boy. Trying to remain spoiler free here. You see that poster I've attached? The one with Michael and Laurie back to back promising a 40 year showdown/send-off?

...this is not that movie.

Don't get me wrong, the trailer makes it clear that this showdown is in it, but a vast majority of the running time is dedicated to following a brand new character that we've never met until this instalment and the troubles he has living in Haddonfield.

Again, trying to remain plot free, the ideas presented here are interesting and could make for a great stand-alone movie with or without the 'Halloween' name. Had this character been present for earlier instalments in this new trilogy it might have come together a lot smoother. However as this isn't the case you'll be left wandering why, in the forty-something year pay off to this trilogy, are you following this random dude around for literally the entire movie. Worse yet, this new stand-alone story that is suddenly presented to us, isn't really that suspenseful or well put together either (suspense has not been this director's strong suit).

So we're left with a stand-alone movie that doesn't quite do it's ideas justice, neither does it do justice to the Strode/Myers fued we've been following since 1978.

*blows raspberry*

Halloween Horror #15 🎃

[Show spoiler]Movie #1: The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)

Netflix's new family film plays very similarly to the Jack Black Goosebumps film (actually, it steals the plot from Goosebumps 2 entirely). Here in one of those awesome fictional American towns where everyone goes OTT for Halloween, a new family move in; Dad is a science teacher and a realist, his daughter tries to be more open minded and fun. They have to work together to stop a curse that has made all the Halloween decorations come alive and attack the town.

This is a harmless, enjoyable family film that, as I say, is tonally very close to Goosebumps but doesn't quite have that Jack Black razzmatazz. Worth a sit through in the season. We chuckled a couple of times.

Movie #2: Dog Soldiers (2002)

[Show spoiler]I've left this new edition on the shelf for a while to be part of the seasonal marathon. Dog Soldiers is an aggressively enjoyable Werewolf siege/action movie. Somewhere between Night of the Living Dead and Aliens (but, with wolves) sits this enjoyably low-budget monster movie. A great cast with fantastic camaraderie help to sell what is a far talkier movie than I remember. A lot of techniques are used to hide the lower budget on this one, but still manages to illicit tension and it's basically just fun.

If you've never given Dog Soldiers a try, you're missing out on a fantastic early 00's cult Brit horror movie.

Chucky season 2 episode 1
Chucky season 2 episode 2

Watched both of these episodes on youtube since they put them on for free like they did with season 1 when it first came out. Hopefully they at least put up one more episode for free if not the rest. I enjoyed the first season overall and I'm digging season 2 so far. They're doing a great job of getting us invested in Jake, Devon and Lexy's plights so far this season. Hopefully the rest of the season stays strong.

Week 2...let's round it off

Day 8.

Day 9.

Day 10.

Day 11.

Day 12. Because i knew this one by it's reputation, I was able to laugh it off and didn't have bad time with. It's not "so bad that it's" good, but it's still riffable movie.

Day 13.

Day 14. Not bad but they tried something different and it didn't really work well enough, especially if you consider what the last movie was

Day 15. Yeah....i think I stick with Cronenberg's version.

Day 16.

Carrie (2002)

The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999)

First viewing of the 2002 TV movie adaptation of Stephen King's novel. It has a lot of similar beats to DePalma's film, naturally, but also does a lot of its own things.
[Show spoiler]I learned afterward that the movie was meant to set up a potential series hence the different ending.
The cinematography or the video transfer (or both) are really ugly. It has this hazy dim look throughout the entire film. Patricia Clarkson as Carrie's mother is probably the only positive thing I can say about this movie.

The Rage: Carrie 2 acts as a hybrid sequel/reboot. It doesn't seem to be a very popular or memorable film to most, but I've always liked it. It fits in with the other teen horror/thrillers that were coming out around the same time and that's the vibe the movie was obviously going for. The lead character Rachel is more empowered and not as much of a victim as Carrie. The big finale is done pretty well. Much better visual effects than Carrie (2002) which would come three years later.

October 16:

Caught this on Netflix last night. It's a cheesy concept, though the movie itself takes the subject matter seriously. Its message is good, though the cliche is strong. You know what you're getting as you watch. No surprises, but still good execution. A decent watch for fun.

21.)

1/2

Doing my best to keep this year's viewing as evenly split between favorites and first-time views, it's time for another one I've never seen before, 88 Films' recently released Human Lanterns. High production standards and on-screen mayhem collide as two rivals both seek to outdo one another in an upcoming local lantern festival. Mix in some love interests, some martial arts, and a dude making lanterns out of human skin and you've got an insane film that to some degree defies description and warrants multiple views to make sure you getting and seeing everything that film puts in fron of you. I was confused, astonished, and entertained in equal measure with this one. 88's disc is Region A and looks and sounds fantastic. I've not had time to dig into the extras yet, but I will the next time I pop this one in.

22.)

The Toolbox Murders may not have been the best at what it did, but it was one of the very first at what it did. Happily for us horror fans, while it may not be the pinnacle, it is pretty high up on the horror movie mountain. Predating Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and countless other revered and admired slashers, The Toolbox Murders presents us with a stable of beautiful victims, innovative and unique kills, a psychologically complex killer, and an unexpected twist/complication. The incomparable Kelly Nichols steals the movie in her short but highly impactful and memorable time on the screen and elevated the entire production merely by being there and doing what she does. In fact, I think it is very fair to say that the film's staying power is due in no small part to her. Blue Underground's 4K presentation is beautiful, far better than the previous disc, and much more than I ever could have hoped for. The extras are copious on the blu-ray disc, and include not one, but two(!) interviews with Ms. Nichols - the shorter one is older and the long one is definitely newer. She talks about this film, her men's magazine work, her porn career, and her extensive work doing make-up. She is completely forthright, engaging, and charming. If you weren't a fan of hers before watching these, you definitely will be by the end. The included video essay is also outstanding. This is a "must-buy" for any and every horror fan. This one gets the highest rating for the film, the extras, the presentation, and Ms. Nichols herself!

42. War Of The Worlds 2005

The legs of my metal chair skidded across the kitchen floor and I heard it make the Tripod sound so I had to give this one a look last night. I'm a fan of both Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg and always enjoy giving this a revisit.

Ready or Not (2019) -

Had the pleasure of introducing a friend to this while I was staying with them. Honestly, might be my favourite horror film of the last 20 years. Samara Weaving is sensational.

Us (2019) -

Definitely Peele's weakest film, but that means very little when the film is this good. Lupita N'yongo is sensational, and I love Elisabeth Moss in this too.

The Pit and the Pendulum

My fav of all the VP films! I really enjoy the very first shot with the brother being dropped off and walking toward the Castle on the hill and the beautiful blue waves crashing against the rocks!! It has the most exquisite production sets and that Pendulum 😳

Dark Skies - IMO, Highly under rated. This movie just works. The family interactions make the whole thing feel real. Great cast. A tad freaky. Me likes a lot.
