Movie 1: Idle Hands (1999)

Ahh slacker cinema. What began in the eighties went on to boom in the nineties with 'Slacker', 'Clerks', 'Mallrats', 'Airheads', 'Dazed and Confused', 'The Big Lebowski', 'Friday' and it's sequels. It began to blend into the early 00's with 'Dude, Where's My Car', 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back' and eventually turned to horror in 'Idle Hands'. I remember enjoying this enough years ago and it was no different this time around.

Here on Halloween a lazy teen finds his right hand murderously possessed Evil Dead 2 style and with the help of his two stoner friends has to stop it killing off the hot girl across the street that he's been crushing on (an early role for Jessica Alba, who has the thankless task of being little else than a horned up hot trophy for the lead).

It's all over the shop. There's very little narrative, a silly situation is presented and our characters are just dealing with it. The film being a comedy means there's little drama presented when people do die, it's mostly presented as humorous daft gags which is absolutely fine. It is far more enjoyable than the reviews would have you believe though. Devon Sawa, Seth Green and Elden Hansen are all charismatic, effects work is great, it has a nostalgic 00's look about it, the soundtrack is rad and it's coated in Halloween.

It's not a horror classic, I'm unsure if it's even a cult film..but it feels like it wants to be.

Movie 2: Scream, Blacula, Scream (1973)

Not quite as strong as it's predecessor, but still a damn good attempt at a Hammer-esque horror, SBS see's Blacula return, raised from the dead as a tool of revenge by a member of a voodoo cult who was shunned as their next leader.

Instantly the vampire turns on his resurecctor, before turning a vampire cult of his own, so that he can get ahold of the voodoo cult leader (early Pam Grier, who is quite subdued here) and have her remove the demon from within him making him mortal again and removing his blood lust.

When I read voodoo cult and Pam Grier I expected this one to go off of the Blaxplotation deep end, however the cult is seemingly implemented well and Pam isn't yet famous for Foxy Brown or Coffy and so can play this role quietly without the weight of expectation. Some of the performances are a step down from the first installment, but it keeps it's head above water and again William H. Marshall is magnificent.

Some of the scenes are musicless and deliberately paced, however there's also some fantastically creepy staging for Blacula's subordinate vampires in a couple of scenes, and a decent rumble in the third act. Once again the lead is only referred to as 'Blacula' in a recap at the opening and again toward the end. Had those scenes been removed we'd be looking at a second genuine entry in the 1970s vampire movie canon.

Movie #1: The Haunting

A classic ghost story of 4 strangers set to occupy a famously haunted mansion for a couple of nights for the purpose of study. The horror here is mostly psychological, a slow burn turn of the screw, particularly for one member of the group who feels like the house is affecting her specifically. This isn�t a hokey haunted house b-movie with rubber bats and skeletons on a string. In fact I�m not sure there are any effects work in the film at all, just a decent script, four strong actors and inventive camerawork and sound design (some of which can be found in The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2).
It�s showing its age at this point in time, however the �ghost story� nature of it still comes through well, even if it�s no longer keeping anyone up at night.
The novel that this film is based on (�The Haunting of Hill House� not to be confused with the movie �The House on Haunted Hill�) has been adapted a number of times, including an awful 1999 remake of this movie (from the director of �Speed� and �Twister�?) and most recently as a Netflix drama by Mike Flanagan.

Movie #2: Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009)

I have to assume the thinking here was to try to cash-in on Shaun of the Dead�s success, casting the two male leads of a successful TV sitcom (Gavin and Stacey vs Spaced) in a UK set horror parody. We knew we were in for a terrible time when the Blu Ray reviews were from early 00�s lad mag �Nuts�.
It�s shit. Look, like most humans I find James Corden to be just the most irritating, and judging by this film Matthew Horne is seemingly empty as a performer, so why would we pick up a badly reviewed horror �comedy� starring the two of them, filled with obvious and awful �lads� humour? Well the answer is simple, I saw that Paul McGann had a prominent role in it as a throwback Hammer Horror style vampire fighting vicar.

We couldn�t turn that down.

But yea, the movie is terrible. The women are obviously reduced to nothing but cardboard cut-out T&A punchlines. To be fair the men aren�t exactly represented any better with Matthew Horne playing a wet mop of a human and Corden supposedly the �lads lad banty banter� type, who�s one joke is �lol yea sex�. Basically nobody comes off well represented here. Which might be fine if it were funny, but it�s not. There�s a lot of weird editing in here where characters just speed up at the end of scenes as if that makes things more exciting. A lot of slapstick silly noises that I think are supposed to replicate Edgar Wrights whip pan sounds�but are terrible. We get page flipping effects wipes, and fonts popping up to tell us where we are every two seconds despite the entire film taking place in two locations in one village. There are moments where it has an enjoyably hokey EC comics look to it, covered in smoke machines and bathed in blues/red. But on the whole it looks and plays like a terrible straight-to-dvd fart. I get the movies it wants to pastiche here (the title being a pay on Roman Polanski�s �Fearless Vampire Killers�), but it�s just�bad.

McGann is great though. This is to be expected.

Movie #1: The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)

We watched the first of these two films last month and found it a mixed bag. It replicated some of the spooky, stalky atmosphere of the original Halloween but as the villains had the victims helpless and pretty much dead to rights from the opening it was difficult to get involved in the �cat and mouse� scenario as they should�ve been dead before the first act was finished.

Interestingly this sequel is reviewed as a lesser movie, but we had a far more enjoyable time with it. This time it�s a family of four that come under siege, and some of the eeriness of peering around the screen trying to see if The Strangers are stood in the corner of the frame has been replaced with more crowd pleasing and bombastic set pieces. The Strangers are the same creepy murder stalkers from the previous instalment however, it�s not a betrayal of their original characterisation, but this time the cat and mouse works better as The Strangers are having to hunt down a family that are running around here, there and everywhere instead of the victims standing idly by unaware that a masked maniac is stood 2 steps away from them (and for some reason not chopping them up).

It�s granted that the characters make a few stock horror movie stupid decisions that will frustrate an audience, however the opening does a good enough job at making us relate to their struggles and see them as people before the titular villains turn up, and ensures that we�re invested in the chase that follows.

A great little cult modern slasher movie.

Movie #2: Casper (1995)

There�s a scene in Casper, right at the start (just after a priest gets his neck broken�?) where Dan Aykroyd comes running out of the haunted house, in full Ghostbusters regalia, tells the homeowners to call someone else, and then runs off. This 30 second joke ruined the rest of the movie for seven year old me, who was so elated about seeing a Ghostbuster turn up on the big screen that I was disappointed they didn�t appear for the rest of the movie.
I haven�t seen the movie since.

And it seems like I�ve not really missed out. The CG effects were obviously incredible for their time and to be fair to them still hold up today, more or less, the script however doesn�t feel complete at all. The jokes aren�t particularly jokey, the plot sort of never really starts (and before you know it..it�s at its conclusion). Most of the film consists of the three ghost uncle�s screaming things at the camera, none of which are really entertaining.

Christina Ricci is great here however. She exudes confidence and charisma which far surpasses that of 90% of child actors (we all know this from her Wednesday days) and it�s genuinely confusing how this didn�t manage to translate into a more successful A-List career as an adult in the way it did for, say, Kirsten Dunst or Scarlett Johansson. Her relationship with an imaginary CG blob is genuine, believable and about the only thing worth taking away from an otherwise largely unsuccessful movie. Don�t get me wrong, the film may still work OK for children, but it doesn�t quite graduate to being narratively strong or particularly quotable or comical for the rest of the family.

Watched both of these episodes on youtube since they put them on for free like they did with season 1 when it first came out. Hopefully they at least put up one more episode for free if not the rest. I enjoyed the first season overall and I'm digging season 2 so far. They're doing a great job of getting us invested in Jake, Devon and Lexy's plights so far this season. Hopefully the rest of the season stays strong.

Day 12. Because i knew this one by it's reputation, I was able to laugh it off and didn't have bad time with. It's not "so bad that it's" good, but it's still riffable movie.

Day 15. Yeah....i think I stick with Cronenberg's version.

Carrie (2002)

The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999)

First viewing of the 2002 TV movie adaptation of Stephen King's novel. It has a lot of similar beats to DePalma's film, naturally, but also does a lot of its own things.

The cinematography or the video transfer (or both) are really ugly. It has this hazy dim look throughout the entire film. Patricia Clarkson as Carrie's mother is probably the only positive thing I can say about this movie.

The Rage: Carrie 2 acts as a hybrid sequel/reboot. It doesn't seem to be a very popular or memorable film to most, but I've always liked it. It fits in with the other teen horror/thrillers that were coming out around the same time and that's the vibe the movie was obviously going for. The lead character Rachel is more empowered and not as much of a victim as Carrie. The big finale is done pretty well. Much better visual effects than Carrie (2002) which would come three years later.

Caught this on Netflix last night. It's a cheesy concept, though the movie itself takes the subject matter seriously. Its message is good, though the cliche is strong. You know what you're getting as you watch. No surprises, but still good execution. A decent watch for fun.

Doing my best to keep this year's viewing as evenly split between favorites and first-time views, it's time for another one I've never seen before, 88 Films' recently released Human Lanterns. High production standards and on-screen mayhem collide as two rivals both seek to outdo one another in an upcoming local lantern festival. Mix in some love interests, some martial arts, and a dude making lanterns out of human skin and you've got an insane film that to some degree defies description and warrants multiple views to make sure you getting and seeing everything that film puts in fron of you. I was confused, astonished, and entertained in equal measure with this one. 88's disc is Region A and looks and sounds fantastic. I've not had time to dig into the extras yet, but I will the next time I pop this one in.

The Toolbox Murders may not have been the best at what it did, but it was one of the very first at what it did. Happily for us horror fans, while it may not be the pinnacle, it is pretty high up on the horror movie mountain. Predating Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and countless other revered and admired slashers, The Toolbox Murders presents us with a stable of beautiful victims, innovative and unique kills, a psychologically complex killer, and an unexpected twist/complication. The incomparable Kelly Nichols steals the movie in her short but highly impactful and memorable time on the screen and elevated the entire production merely by being there and doing what she does. In fact, I think it is very fair to say that the film's staying power is due in no small part to her. Blue Underground's 4K presentation is beautiful, far better than the previous disc, and much more than I ever could have hoped for. The extras are copious on the blu-ray disc, and include not one, but two(!) interviews with Ms. Nichols - the shorter one is older and the long one is definitely newer. She talks about this film, her men's magazine work, her porn career, and her extensive work doing make-up. She is completely forthright, engaging, and charming. If you weren't a fan of hers before watching these, you definitely will be by the end. The included video essay is also outstanding. This is a "must-buy" for any and every horror fan. This one gets the highest rating for the film, the extras, the presentation, and Ms. Nichols herself!

The legs of my metal chair skidded across the kitchen floor and I heard it make the Tripod sound so I had to give this one a look last night. I'm a fan of both Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg and always enjoy giving this a revisit.

Definitely Peele's weakest film, but that means very little when the film is this good. Lupita N'yongo is sensational, and I love Elisabeth Moss in this too.

The Pit and the Pendulum

My fav of all the VP films! I really enjoy the very first shot with the brother being dropped off and walking toward the Castle on the hill and the beautiful blue waves crashing against the rocks!! It has the most exquisite production sets and that Pendulum 😳
