      Critics Consensus

American Gothic may not be striving for much, yet it holds promise as a soapy, campy family murder-mystery that's ultimately just engaging enough.

Brian P. Kelly Wall Street Journal Looking past [its] shortcomings, it can be fun to play who's-the-killer with New England's upper crust. Jun 23, 2016 Full Review Tim Goodman Hollywood Reporter Everything in American Gothic is faux-weird and faux-creepy, which creates this looming sense that everyone is about to start laughing and admit that the show is a spoof. Spoiler alert: That doesn't happen. Jun 23, 2016 Full Review Brian Moylan Guardian The show is called American Gothic, but it has no mood or tone at all... Where is the darkness and dread? Where is the brooding and blood? It's apparently in an incarnation of this show that is decidedly better. Jun 23, 2016 Full Review Stephanie Cooke Rogues Portal I don't particularly enjoy the storytelling method where they just make you think it's everyone to distract you from the real killer. Subtly is an art that American Gothic did not master. Aug 21, 2018 Full Review Kari Croop Common Sense Media Soapy whodunit mixes murder, drugs, and family dysfunction. Rated: 3/5 Jul 12, 2016 Full Review Sarah Moran Screen Rant If a quasi-suspenseful thriller filled with campy, soap opera theatrics is your cup of tea, then American Gothic may be entertaining enough (if not thoroughly engaging). Audience Member I loved this show! A great mystery and very interesting characters. Each episode had a great hook that kept me watching. I recommend to anyone who likes a mystery and drama, along with the deeply flawed characters. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member With it's clunky plot and Wooden acting, the Question isn't whodunnit but whydunnit? Up there with bosch for most UNPROMISING us crime drama of Recent times. That said, if you liked bosch........ Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I’m binge watching on CBS interactive app. This is a great show with superior actors and great plot twists and turn. Too bad there is only one season but not sure how it would carry on to a second season. Well worth watching this one season of 13 episodes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty interesting show that keeps you guessing who did it and why. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Lots of fun to be had here in this super soapy serial killer whodunnit. I hope they air a season 2. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Not worth the film this tv drama is printed on. This story lacks imagination and originality.
