Editorial Reviews
The crown jewel of the Dead’s studio output! The album's original 10 tracks include many of the Dead's best-known, most-loved, and most popular songs both on record and in concert for the next 25 years. An album that includes Box Of Rain, Friend Of The Devil, Sugar Magnolia, Candyman, Ripple, Brokedown Palace, Attics Of My Life, and Truckin' looks more like a greatest-hits compilation than a second album of 1970, and yet American Beauty demonstrates a band unable to slow down in terms of the quality of its writing, recording, and performing. -This three-CD set includes the original album with newly remastered audio, plus an unreleased concert recorded on February 18, 1971 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. The show was mixed from the 16-track analog master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Bob Weir’s Marin County TRI Studios and mastered by Grammy® Award-winning engineer, David Glasser.

I threw on a pair of headphones and was amazed at the extra texturing and layers that were reveled during the remastering process. I won't go into details here, but instead highly suggest that you experience it for yourself.
In appreciation of my wife’s permission to buy the player, I purchased this album for her.
Yep, she has been to over 260 shows, and I could not go wrong with this “Beauty” of an album.
It was on the platter and playing within minutes of her opening the present. It sounded so rich and warm, and full of eye-closing reminiscent memories accompanied by her joyful smile.
Which one do I buy next?
The original album (Disc 1) sounds a bit more open and clean which is always nice even if its not worlds away different sounding from the last reissue. Nothing really has to be said about this set of tunes--one of the best studio albums the band ever released.
The live show (Discs 2-3) is well worth hearing. Mixed from 16 track analog master tapes, and recorded by Bob Mathews and Betty Cantor (a "Bob and Betty"tape) the show is one great performance after another. Plus the debut of five new songs: "Playing In The Band", "Bertha", "Wharf Rat", "Loser", and "Greatest Story Ever Told". Plus there's a great 21 + minutes "Dark Star>Wharf Rat>Dark Star" jam that's a good example of the Dead's approach to their music during this era. But the entire show is pretty inspired sounding, ranking near the top of other good shows we've heard. Ned Lagin ("Seastones") sat in with the band for added flavor. There's also good live versions of "Truckin'", "Loser", "Hard To Handle", "Big Boss Man", "Playing In The Band", "St. Stephen", and "Uncle John's Band" among other tunes.
The packaging is similar to previous anniversary reissues. The discs snap into trays. There's an informative 20 page booklet with a fairly lengthy essay by David Browne and some period photos and note from producer David Lemieux. There's also a photo of artist Alton Kelley in his studio with the cover graphic on his worktable--a nice touch. The four-fold cardboard packaging comes in an open ended slipcase card with an embossed cover graphic--no lenticular cover--which would've looked quite nice considering the Kelley graphic. There's a track list for the live show and recording/production credits on two inside panels. The back cover has the original album graphic and a complete list of tracks for the three CDs.
As most everyone would agree, this album can easily sit alongside any other great studio album the Dead ever released. And having a great show from around the same era is what a lot of fans will gravitate towards. This is well worth adding to your shelf of great Dead reissues.
The album itself needs no intro at all. It's one of the greatest albums ever made. By then the 6th LP they released, American Beauty was on the shelves just around 4 1/2 months after Workingman's Dead. It only hit #19 on the charts for peak sales, but it remains today nearly an institution in itself. American Beauty will never get old. The album as a whole resonates beyond time and cultural differences. It's coherent, creative, and brimful with beautiful songs. That's all that needs be said.
The 50th packaging is quite lovely. An outer slipcase with an embossed American Beauty logo in the traditional Dead fonts. On the back of the slip is a foiled rendition of the same art. Both look stunning. The gatefold digipack is also pretty nice but fairly basic. The book is a good read with a few details about the whole ordeal. Altogether, the Dead have been making their 50th double sets great buys in my opinion.
All in all you can't ask for too much more in a 25 dollar package other than they could have given us a DVD-A with high-res mixes like other bands such as King Crimson have done. Other than that not a huge deal. It sounds amazing to this day. Crystal clear, with great dynamics and resolution. The crowning achievement of the Grateful Dead, now with a quite stunning live disc they must have been saving for such an occasion. Highly recommended.
I was a little bit surprised after I finished listening. I didn't increase my pot intake, I didn't lose my job or drop out of school, and I am not filling my walls with black light posters of dancing bears and skulls. I do feel changed though. My mind is opened up. Maybe if American Beauty (expanded) didn't ruin my life, other classic cult-rock bands won't either. Then again, American Beauty just might be the gateway album that DARE warned us about as kids.
