JAMES FREDRICK O’NEIL

James Fredrick O’Neil, 88, of Long Rapids passed away Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, at his home. Jim was born in Alpena on May 1, 1933, to the late William and Edna (Fredrickson) O’Neil and married Ada Maralyn Yuker on Feb. 28, 1953. Jim served in the United States Army. He retired from Stoneport in 1996 and was an active member of the Long Rapids Township Fire Department serving as chief for 44 years.

LAURA NELSON STIBITZ

Laura Nelson Stibitz, age 42, of Alpena, passed away with family by her side on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021, at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor. The daughter of Nancy Kelly (nee McCord) and Sanford Nelson, Laura was born on March 13, 1979, in Saginaw, Michigan. She married Andrew “AJ” Stibitz on Oct. 11, 2008. Laura and AJ shared many adventures during their marriage. Laura was a teacher and administrator with Alpena Public Schools. She attended Heritage High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Alma College and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan. She enjoyed extensive travel in her life, visiting all 50 states and venturing abroad to Europe several times. Laura loved being outdoors, especially when camping and fishing. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and colleagues.

Brandon J. Skiba, 32, of Torrance, California passed away Sept. 3, 2021 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Brandon was born in Redondo Beach, California to Tom Skiba and Teresa Mungarro on March 5, 1989. He lived in California for most of his life, but for several years lived in Alpena, Michigan with his father.

John Romel, 54, of Lansing, formerly of Alpena, passed away at home unexpectedly from a heart attack on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021. John was born Nov. 26, 1966 in Alpena to Delbert and Shirley Romel. He graduated from Alpena High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After returning home, he moved to Lansing where he specialized as a maintenance and repair technician for multiple car washes in the area.

Allen Rodrick Thompson passed away peacefully Tuesday, 9/22/2021. He was born in Cheboygan, Michigan, April 10, 1929. He served his country when drafted into the Army Jan. 3, 1951, to Dec. 18, 1952. He was a loving and devoted husband to Shirley Thompson for 57 years. Allen was blessed with five daughters, Theresa (Wright) Bussey, Shirley Wright, Kim (Wright) St. Charles, Alison (Thompson) Wachowski, and Amy (Thompson) Brisson.

CHERYL KUS VOSS

Cheryl Kus Voss, age 70, of Capitola, California passed away Sept. 8, 2021 at her home after a two and a half year battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Hamtramck Michigan she grew up in Alpena, graduating from Alpena Catholic Central and then Eastern Michigan University. In 1976 she moved to San Francisco. After enjoying careers as an elementary school teacher and software programmer, Cheryl moved to southern California in 1985 and found her passion as a make-up artist in the motion picture and television industries, a career that she so enjoyed until her retirement in 2005. It was on the set of a movie where Cheryl met her partner, Terry Haskell. They were married April 2, 1993 in Lake Tahoe Nevada. Cheryl was a talented artist, loved to dance, listen to music, and travel with Terry, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

George Kenneth Hess, 100, of Alpena passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021, at Touch of Country AFC. George was born on Oct. 12, 1920, to the late Orcen and Marie “Mae” (Spitzbarth) Hess and married Norma Jean Spring on Aug. 12, 1944. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2015. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII and retired from the D&M Railroad in 1981. He enjoyed collecting cut glass, stamps, coins, and model trains.

HENRY LEE CADARETTE

Henry Lee Cadarette, 73, of Alpena passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2021, of an apparent heart attack. Henry Lee Cadarette was born in Alpena on Feb. 12, 1948, to the late Henry and Clarise (Kramer) Cadarette. He served in the United State Army during the Vietnam War returning to Alpena where he owned and operated Cadarette Construction for many years. Henry along with his mother, Clarise owned and operated the Maplewood Tavern until most recently. He enjoyed wrenching on cars, collecting guitars, and playing in numerous local bands for many years. He enjoyed Legend Car racing and was a lifetime member of the VFW Alpena Post 2496.

FRANCIS MARIE ZIESMAN

Francis Marie Ziesman, 85, of Ossineke, passed away Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021, at home. Francis Marie Seymour was born on Sept. 22, 1935, in Hillman, Michigan to the late Thomas and Fannie (Pratt) Seymour. On May 5, 1956, she married Carl Ziesman. He preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2018. Francis was a school bus driver for 22 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and the Spruce VFW Auxiliary since 1951. Francis was a NEMSCA volunteer for many years caring for the elderly.
