Description | Introduction to central ideas and beliefs, key debates, and leading thinkers of traditional and contemporary Christian theology such as God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, faith, creation, salvation, atonement, religious history, and heaven. | Chronological overview of primary themes and debates in Christian theology, with a focus on contemporary non-Western theologies, feminist voices, and Christianity and world religions. | Narrative of the history of Christian theological movements, key ideas, and theologians of the Patristic Period, the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Reformation and Post-Reformation, and the Modern Era up to the present day. | Guide to the European Reformation surveying the ideas of its leaders and movements (Lutheranism, Calvinism, Anabaptism, the Catholic and English Reformations) in light of the intellectual landscape and socio-political issues of the 16th century. | Assuming no previous knowledge of Christian apologetics, this textbook clearly explains the major theoretical and practical aspects of the tradition while exploring its core themes, historical development, and current debates. |
Feedback | “Students need such a clearly presented, sure-footed account of the theological basics.” Theological Book Review | “The genius of McGrath is his remarkable ability to write in a clear, concise, and lucid manner that draws teachers and students to participate with the great thinkers of the Christian tradition, past and present.” Prof. D. Ngien, Tyndale University | Praise for the previous edition: “Historical Theology is a great book for seminary students or any just interested in theology. McGrath covers a lot of material in a relatively short book, and he keeps it interesting throughout." | “Vigorous, brisk, and highly stimulating. The reader will be thoroughly engaged from the outset, and considerably enlightened at the end.” Rev. Dr J. Platt, Oxford University | "… All in all, this is a much needed and incredibly important book, one that McGrath—given his wide experience of writing and teaching in apologetics—is almost uniquely qualified to write." - Dr. Andy Bannister, University of Toronto |
