It's actually hard to write 10 lines about this... uh... "event" that aired on Fox (Hey, would Fox lie to you? Case closed!).
Then again, it's the minimum length, so I have to try. I "like" this special so much, somehow I ended up owning it in LD. While copying old discs to DVD, I found this "gem" again, so I decided to give it a try, 10 years after I first got it. I remember not being impressed at all the first time I watched it. Then again, I hadn't seen "Plan 9 from Outer Space" yet, so now I had the clear advantage of cynicism and sarcasm.
Anyway. The whole thing is pretty interesting, since from the start you are treated to "fair and unbiased" journalism ("what we have here... is not... a human being..." says the LD jacket cover. I wonder what the supposed expert really said about the film). The people who support the authenticity of the film are (shock! surprise! spoiler!) Ray Santilli and some investigator that is sure the supposed cameraman is telling the truth. The rest of the investigation focuses on unknown people. Stan Winston makes an appearance. Quite frankly, he and his team of FX experts look like very, very bad actors. I wonder if he was paid for saying he wouldn't be able to replicate the alien on-screen. I wonder if he lost some work because directors saw him in the film and thought "well, if Stan can't do this alien, we'd better get someone else who is better at this whole SFX thing".
The alien autopsy itself is something of a cult movie for me. I'm pretty sure people 10 or 20 years from now will look back and say "hey, look! Those 1990-something people were kinda dumb! they thought that was an alien!" So I'm keeping my LD and my DVD, just in case eBay still exists 30 years from now.
